The Guild - chapter 8

Pov Silver Knight

It seemed that Eclipse finally settled down after flapping its wings, tapping my chest or arm, and moving around quite a bit.

I guess it doesn't like the dark or an enclosed environment. I wonder why. I'll have to ask it if it ever evolves into a creature that can use vocal cords.

I had been forced to close up my cloak and leave Eclipse stuck in there, thankfully since it wasn't too big, it didn't make any weird bumps on the cloak I was wearing, even my arm was slightly hidden. That was one of the things I liked about this cloak, it can literally hide almost anything on my person.

"Just wait a little bit longer, we are almost at the gates."

I said quietly as I eyed the surrounding people who gave our group a large amount of space. Well the majority of people.

The trio surrounded me in a triangle formation with Gerald at front and Mike and Lex stayed to my left and right while keeping a comfortable distance. This was due to the large gathering of people at the main gate who might've bumped into me too many times which would bother Eclipse and if I wasn't paying attention, might fall out of my hand as it was being help in my injuried hand as I kept my dominant hand on the hilt of my bastard sword just incase some idiot tried to do something.

Huh the trio must be pretty high leveled for a merc group, the people sure treat it like that.

I was busy watching for any strange movements that I didn't notice that we reached the start of the line due to our status as mercs. This was when the trio went into a single file line with me in the middle.

"Form of ID."

A man in a suit of knight armor with the colors of the kingdom, red and yellow, said with boredom. He had a Halbert leaning against the rock wall of the gate.

"I see your party has gained a fourth member even though you guys went out with 3 yesterday."

The guard said with slight suspicion as he studied me.

"Ah this is someone from the Merc guild, we met on the road towards the city."

Gerald said energetically as he pulled out a black card with gold engravings with a golden three in the middle, a rune in the upper right corner, from a spatial pouch and handed it to the guard.

I expected them to be atleast gold one, not gold three. They must've ranked up not to long ago seeing how I didn't even know they existed until now.

The guard pulled out a scanner to scan the rune, and handed back the card letting Gerald through, and then it was my turn.

"Form of ID."

The guard once again said but with suspicion this time.

Now for the hard part. I moved closer to the guard and he made sure that I saw him grab the Halbert. He was a head taller than me, just a bit shorter than Gerald.

I reached into my spatial pouch and pulled out the same black card Gerald had, but the engravings were a light blue with a light blue one in the middle with a SC before it. The card sparkled slightly in the light. I quickly gave it to the now frozen guard as he stumbled slightly and grabbed the card with one hand and kept it close in-between us.

Good he understands.

He placed the Halbert back before he grabbed the scanner and scanned the rune.

"Welcome back from the hunt, princess."

He whispered as I quickly moved past the guard and joined Gerald in waiting for the other two, which didn't take long.

The inside of the city was less populated than the outside gate. And it looked really nice too, but I've seen the slums before so this scene leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Eclipse would've been really excited at this sight...

I thought guiltily to myself as I felt the juvenile moth shiver in anger for what felt like the 10th time.

Don't worry Eclipse, the guild is pretty close to the entrance of the city.

----------------------------------------

It took a fifteen minute walk to the middle of the middle of the middle-class zone, which was were the main guild building was, I took off my hood just before entering as hooded individuals in the guild were usually challenged by the other mercs for some odd reason.

I was never a part of this... ok maybe once or twice when I was a rookie.

The second the door opened I heard the familiar sounds of laugher and drunken yelling. The smell of alcohol hit me seconds later. The inside of the guild wasn't as impressive as the outside even if it was fairly large. The floorboard were made from cedar wood and had an arrangement of spills on it that would be cleaned up early next morning, the walls were a pale brown color and the large wooden mission board that was filled with various quests sat by next to a doorway which led into a stairwell. There was a bar ahead of us which ended close to the doorway next to the mission board, but had enough room for a barstool. The bar also acted as a receptionist counter (Author note: or is it desk?) Whenever someone needed to get approved for a mission, sell material, or turn in a mission. The lights weren't the modern lights that the majority of the middle class zone had, these lights were more orangey and it came from the ceiling light which definitely added to the cozy feel this guild was trying to do.

Ah home at last.

Or at least the closest thing to home. It wasn't like this all the time, usually it was like this during the evening or when some guy did something note worthy, you have to hope you're not that guy or else there goes your money. I know this as this happened atleast 3 times to me.

After something close to 30 noise and smell complaints, the guild had to install a rune that removed the smell and sound. Of course this rune couldn't cover an open door so that's the only time a civilian heard the chaos

Me and the trio entered the guild.

Ok seems like no one noticed us... let's hope it stays this way.

The second I thought of that, I immediately heard some drunk yell out at the top of his lungs.

"Everyone quick! bow to your royal highness."

Shit spoke too soon.

I looked over and he did a mocking bow as laughter happened around us.

"I see only one person bowing, do you all want to meet the guillotine?"

I said in an ice cold tone as I joked back. The crowd of drunkards laughed back. Drunkards were always easy to joke around, make a shit joke, you won't embarrass yourself if you have a drunken friend.

"Whats with the cloak princess? Got no armor on?"

A familiar annoying voice yelled out.

"Ah Steve is there ever a time you don't imagine me nude?"

"Nope!"

I looked over to Steve, one of the higher leveled mercs, and saw him take another swing from the tankard as he laughed.

I also saw some rookies looking as uncomfortable as ever. I remember I was like that, they'll soon join in on the fun as this was very common if you got any higher than silver and made a name for yourself.

"Gerald did you use your promotion money to have the princess join you?"

"And my soul!"

This caused the laughter to double. Thankfully at this point I reached the stairway and started making my way up to the third floor where the main office, and the person that I needed, located at.

The trio wouldnt join me as they had to hand in their mission as failed since I finished it.

----------------------------------------

The third floor was empty since most of the staff was partying, or were in their rooms doing stuff. Thankfully, I had enough interaction today.

But sadly I would have to talk with the person I most certainly don't want to talk with.

I hesitantly knocked on the door and swung it open seeing the young guild leader holding a rose in his mouth. His black short hair slightly moved from the gust of air I accidentally produced by opening up the door. His blue eyes were straight up sparkling. He wore loosly a black adorned with gold suit.

"Ah my beloved-"

He said, his voice sweet as honey, but I knew better as I cut him off almost immediately.

"No time for that, I have an arrow head still stuck in my shoulder and I'm going to cash in 2 of my favors. 1) you will not say a word, write, draw, or use any other form of speech that will allow you to rely information about what will happen. If anybody or anything is in here that is not you, me, or Eclipse, turn it off so it cannot record the conversation or make the other person or thing leave 2) you will not cause any harm to a creature that goes by the name of Eclipse and is from the species called insectoid. Do you agree?"

"That will be no problem- wait what's an insectoid?"

The guild leader named Jack sighed in defeat as he put the rose back on the table.

"It'll be easier if I show you."

I replied as I opened my cloak and a very angry Eclipse jumped down. It stared at me before tapping my leg extremely fast.

"Oh ho, this is the first time I've ever seen such a species, mind if I read its stats?"

He said as he sat up from his chair, all of his attention placed on Eclipse, who seemed to only care about letting me know how annoyed it was at me. I nodded my head and I saw him concentrate for atleast 10 seconds before slumping back onto his chair.

"Did you bring a powerful creature to threaten me, Silven? I would be honored if the princess thought that highly of me."

He said mischievously.

"No I don't think highly of you, and besides aren't you more powerful than me, Jack the Reaper? We both know that I would not be able to bring in a creature that even you can't use [Appraisal] on."

I replied coldy.

"Ah you're no fun, anyways yeah I'm curious on how it can resist my [Greater Appraisal]."

"Alright I'm going to show you its [Status] then, but remember anything you see there, you are not allowed to communicate about, or hurt Eclipse in any way."

"Yeah yeah I know."

He said while rolling his eyes.

This was when I decided to grab Eclipse, who started moving it's legs in confusion, and take a seat infront of the desk Jack was currently sitting at. I placed Eclipse on the table and it gave me what felt like the stink eye but stayed still. I placed a [Status] Reader inbetween the three of us. Jack in the meantime snapped his fingers and the curtains went down and a glowing blue sphere surrounded the three of us. This sight immediately made Eclipse awestruck as it looked around like a kid. It then stared holes into Jack who laughed it off awkwardly.

"Eclipse can you do a Reading for us?"

This was followed by raising two legs, which didn't surprise me.

"Yes I know you're angry about what happened today, but Jack here is going to help us."

Still no. I sighed, before I resorted to my last option.

"Ok, is there something you want that will make you change your mind?"

This time Eclipse lifted a single leg up.

Progress...

I was about to say something but then I saw Eclipse point to the glowing blue sphere.

Wait I never told you how to do that... did you learn from just watching us?

I was about to ask but Jack cut me off.

"Oh you want to learn [Absolute Silence]? That is what this sphere we are in called."

Eclipse lifted up a single leg once more.

"I'm guessing this means yes?"

I nodded my head in silence as I watched the two.

"Very well then, I Jack Vincere leader of the mercs, promise to teach you to the best of my abilities [Absolute Silence]."

Jack replied smiling.

"If you think of taking advantage of Eclipse I will climb the ranks and blast you through a mountain."

I warned Jack and he just smiled even broader.

Eclipse, satisfied, placed its leg on the Reader and waited for me to make it lose a drop of blood. And I did just that.

I will never forget the way Jack's smile was removed from his face as he was shocked.
