An Escape - Chapter 28

My markings kind of worked, I went off track a few times, but otherwise they were fine. I think I made them too small, so I made them bigger, and I added a few more markings pointing towards the clearing with the single tree. Doing this took me some time, but since I left early, I exited the forest just before it turned dark.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have much time to use [Appraisal] on flowers and other small things I found interesting.

I can always do that once the sun comes up again.

Since I didn’t feel as tired as before, I decided to find a different spot to go into torpor. This place had hordes of creatures roaming about and I’m sure that the creatures I saw when the sun started rising could easily see me in the tall grass.

Thankfully, unlike in the forest, I could see once the sun went down. Unfortunately, I have to deal with grass taller than me.

Which means I must find higher ground.

I wasn’t too annoyed; it was quite fun and fulfilling, this was all so new to me.

Trotting through the grass did feel confusing, as everywhere I looked was just stocks of green, yet after a bit I came across an outcrop which allowed me to see past the grass.

As I guessed, it's just empty fields.

I did see some trees in the distance, but they were far, and the grass blocked my vision too much. This might’ve been a waste of time but being on top of this outcrop let me see further out.

The field dipped down a bit, allowing me to see the sheer size of it.

It's endless.

I knew that wasn’t true as far away, I saw the silhouettes of a mountain range. Yet that’s all I could see. The field only dipped a bit after all.

I hate being small...

I grumbled, and cautiously went down the outcrop. Once down I had nothing to do.

I guess it's time to try and open my [Status]… But where do I start?

I tried a bunch of mental commands to open it up, yet nothing worked...

Wait, what if I use [Appraisal] on myself?

I have to try that once the sun rises and I can find some reflective water. Which isn’t hard since I know where a creak is...

Wait is it even reflective? The only water I've seen that was reflective was when it was still, and that creak was moving. There are also those black furs, maybe they aren't there once the sun rises?

I could only hope. For now, I decided that going into torpor beside this outcrop was a good idea, sure it was open, but the rock covered me from where the brown furs were.

----------------------------------------

Once the sun started to come up, I got out of my torpor and hurried through the forest. During my torpor, my mind went over other possibilities of looking into my [Status], one of them being etching into a piece of bark the drawing I saw on a Reader. I was quite sure that would not work, but if using [Appraisal] on myself didn’t work, I would have to try some other method.

This time it didn’t take me as long to reach the creak, something I was glad about. It still took me quite a bit since it was so far away, but that should be fine, after all today I will find a new home. Hopefully.

Not wanting to take unnecessary risks, I stayed in the tree line looking around for any sign of black furs. After making sure there was nothing in the vicinity, I trotted up to the water and looked into it. I could barely see where I was due to the moving water which complicated things, so I went down the hill and to where the black furs were last time.

There wasn’t even a trace of them left, I was a bit confused to how, considering how large they were, but then again, that other black fur...

I really need to get better names for the creatures...

I thought about using [Appraisal] on one of the smaller creatures so I could find out their sub species...

That white fur looked similar to the black furs so I guess I’ll use [Appraisal] on it if I ever see it again. Anyways I need to focus.

I was getting off track, finding out how to open my [Status] is more important than names.

The creak expanded down here, and the water moved steadily, which allowed me to see myself better. Not as clear as that large body of water, but clear enough I could tell it was me.

Let's hope the [Appraisal] can tell it's me too.

Pebble A pebble

What?

I used it again

Pebble A pebble

No, me! Not the pebble.

This time I focused only on myself, and I got no response. I waited a bit longer before using [Appraisal] on myself again. This time the blue rectangle appeared.

Changing [Title] for increased survivability of the last of the insectoid species...

I was a bit caught off guard, I was about to dismiss the blue rectangle and use [Appraisal] on myself again, but the blue rectangle disappeared and was replaced by my full [Status]. I paused.

Is it that easy?

I expected that this would take me significantly longer, but I guess not?

Whatever, I shouldn’t complain.

Instead, I looked at my [Status].

If my memory serves me right the [Title] description of [The Last Of Your Species] changed. Was that what the blue rectangle was talking about?

I was more interested in my skills, especially [Essence of the Moon], I tried to [Appraisal] it, but nothing changed, even after trying multiple times. I was slightly disappointed, but not everything could be easy.

Jack did say something about finding out what my skills did the hard way... but it never actually told me what that way was.

I, like always, was mad at Jack, I don’t know why Silven even stayed by it.

I shook my head and dismissed the [Status]. This was a very productive trip, so I was happy about that. I was about to drink some water when something caught my eye. Something that was a dirty white. I instinctively moved to the side, which caused a blur of fur to go right past me and into the water with a splash.

I took multiple steps back as something white rose from the water.

A familiar white furred creature stared back at me, yet it looked skinner this time. It bared its teeth at me, and a low growl sounded out.

I didn’t hesitate to use [Appraisal] on it.

Name: [???] Age: [19 days] Species: Wolf

Sub-Species: Young Light Cub

Level - [2/10]

Young light cub? I think I’ll just call you cub.

The cub in question turned even more hostile and bounded straight for me, splashing through the water, making it hard to see for the both of us. Since the cub was stronger than me, I started running down the creak.

The cub followed relentlessly; I did not want to go too far as being in the forest when the moon was up was far more dangerous than the cub.

I spun around, almost losing my balance, but ending up facing the cub, who seemed to didn’t expect me to suddenly turn around as it skidded to a stop.

There was stillness as one of us waited for the other to move. I was pretty sure I had enough time to make it back to the field, sadly it seems as if I won't be able to find a home today.

That’s when I saw the top part of its head suddenly went rigid as did the rest of its body. It didn’t even pay attention to me any longer as it stood tall and looked around. Before suddenly running into the forest.

Confused, I looked around and saw nothing strange.

What were you so worried about?

Not willing to chase after the cub, but not also not willing to test the judgement of the cub, I cautiously trotted into the tree line and waited, hiding behind a berry bush.

Just in time too as two black large cubs ran together across the creak. I recognized them as the two sitting down beside the pitch-black cubs yesterday. I started backing away, as the other cubs should be around here, at least, I think.

Ok the creak is dangerous, good to note.

Just as I suspected, there were more of the cubs, and they were coming from where I was supposed to go. Not wanting to get caught by them, I was forced to follow where the Light cub went. I’d rather deal with it than the seven cubs here.

As I didn’t want to be heard, I quietly stalked through the trees, until I was sure I was far enough.

Not wanting to get lost, I put a big mark on the tree, I would not make it to the field, it would be a better idea to use the remaining time I have to find a temporary home.

Or find food.

I felt the all too familiar feeling of hunger return.

Maybe I should try getting meat...

I was a little upset about the Light cub escaping from me.
