Born In Darkness - Prologue

Born In Darkness - Prologue

An impossibly infinite blackness stretched out in all directions was the first thing I saw when I was rudely given consciousness.

It was a strange feeling, at one moment I was mindlessly drifting across this... plain, and then I suddenly had thoughts. I think I was going to go back to my mindless state as I questioned my sudden existence for an unknown period.

But my questioning was interrupted as a large amount of information rushed into my... thoughts. I had barely enough time to digest the current information before some more was shoved into me.

I learned many things, and one of those things was that this blackness was my home, at least I think, my Mother gave birth to me here, no... more like created me here before shoving random information into my thoughts. I also learned what colors were, which made me confused on why my home was devoid of any of them. They were very pretty to imagine, but here I was stuck with a boring color, black. Not fun.

Another interesting tidbit of information I got was that there are others of my kind! Or at least there was. The information I got did not say why my kind disappeared suddenly, I felt like something in the information was being kept away from me by Mother, but I could not tell what.

The concept of time was weird in this place, but there is one thing I am sure of: I've been alive for only a few moments and the amount of information was not meant for something this young, I think? I don’t have much to compare too, only the information I was given.

Suddenly as I was digesting the disgusting amount of information I was given, a dark orange oval opened in front of me with a black tear in the middle. The black tear then moved insanely fast across the oval and stopped just before me, it then proceeded to stare at me intensely. Which was surprising as the oval was enormous, and I felt so little. As I was thinking these thoughts, something dawned over me.

Mother?

Even though no sound came from me, my Mother seemed to understand as she looked at me with what felt like a softer gaze. I could not tell since Mother's... eye, was simply too large to understand easily.

As I studied it intently hoping to see more of my Mother, I suddenly experienced a new thing. I had felt for the first time since my birth via a powerful force that made me move closer to my Mother's eye, which suddenly took up all of my vision. Then as I was trying to calm down from the sudden feeling and beauty which was my Mother's eye, I felt a deep rumble that shook my entire being.

"My child whom I created with my entire being, I bestow the name of Eclipse on you, for you shall be the being that blots out the sun and casts the world in absolute darkness."

A new feeling once again that I couldn’t help but like. My Mother had an unbelievably beautiful and ancient voice, and hearing that for the first time was exhilarating. But there was one problem, it didn't make any sense.

... What??

I was confused, so very confused. I may have gained knowledge, that I'm pretty sure something my age shouldn't have, but I have no clue what the sun was. Why would I blot a sun and cast darkness on the world when the world was already black? Like a sun seems more interesting than this world of mine. This world has nothing other than my Mother, who had a very pretty eye. I'd rather not lose something so pretty to the blackness I was born in.

"Do not worry my child, I will protect you and support you with my existence, so no need for fear."

For some reason my Mother seemed very proud of this fact and I couldn't help but stare at it blankly even though I don't think I have eyes. If I do, I hope they're pretty like Mothers.

No I don't wanna.

The silence was deafening, probably because I missed being able to hear my Mother's voice. But that didn't stop me from staring at my Mother intently as she stared back.

"I told you my child, I'll keep you safe. I'll even transport you to the safest location I can think of-"

No, I just find blackness not very nice to look at. The blackness is boring and ugly, your eyes are so much more beautiful!

I decided to cut it off to prove the point that I was uninterested and was more interested in color. My Mother let out a deep rumble and looked at me sadly, at least I think it's sad, still not used to emotions or the enormous eye.

"I can understand my child, you were just born, and your fate is frightening, so how about I leave you here so you can think about it. Whenever you are ready to give me an answer, that isn't one of cowardness, just call out to me and I'll respond."

This is starting to get slightly irritating.

Wait- what?? No- I just don't enjoy looking at the color black-

But it was too late, my Mother seemed to disappear as it closed its eye, and I was left alone in the black. I immediately found the situation awful. I missed the sound, I missed feeling my Mother being close, and I missed looking at the pretty eye.

I don't want to be here...

And then something that I couldn't describe appeared in my sight, and I felt something grab a part of me and give a tug, but it was very weak.

Mother! Thank you for coming back! Just listen to me this time-!

Wait a second, why did this tugging feel wrong- The something definitely didn't belong here. My Mother had a firm hold on me last time! Why does it feel so weak now?

My non-existent body shuddered as something crawled across my non-existent body quickly and wrapped itself around me with zero time to waste. It then started pulling me with greater strength which made me move quickly towards the something that floated there in the black.

I may be slightly interested in the new things happening, but the something made my mind cry out. The knowledge I was given told me not to leave without my Mother's guidance, but if this wasn't Mother, what was it? Well, that didn't matter as I desperately tried to escape, which proved futile as I didn’t even know if my body existed or not.

MOTHER!

I yelled out as I felt the touch of the something, it felt awful, I unconsciously rejected the very thought of it being this close to me.

And then I saw my Mother's eye appear, and an intense pressure flew towards me- or rather to the thing which wrapped itself across my non-existent body. I felt a shudder, that wasn’t mine, and suddenly I stopped having the feeling of being tug. But immediately afterwards, the thing moving me, continued through the something.

I only saw my Mother's eye for a very small amount of time before the world went white.
