Chapter 9: Inflicting Death To Save A Life

Chapter 9: Inflicting Death To Save A Life

Once Henry walked through the portal, he saw a very lively scene. There were countless shopkeepers, each showing off their merchandise, which included everything a mage or aura master could need. There were martial arts manuals and aura rejuvenation potions for the aura masters, and magic catalysts, staffs, and spell scrolls for the mages. There were countless people roaming the market, examining the merchandise.

"This is....a mana user's dream. However, those prices sure are more like a mana user's nightmare." Henry quipped.

"Haha, I suppose you could say so. However, this place is mostly for people at fifth circle or ten stars, and they tend to have higher paying jobs. Anyways, we have a job here. Don't get too sidetracked."

"Yes." Henry followed Eve as they walked deeper into the market, towards an area where the smell of iron could be smelt heavily. Henry could tell this was where the blacksmiths were.

After walking for a while, Henry started seeing the forges and the large, muscular smiths working in them. He was however greatly impressed by the quality of the weapons. Even though he didn't know much about quality weapons, he could tell these were on another level.

After walking even more, Captain Eve finally stopped in front of a very fancy looking smithy that had no workers at all. It seemed to be the only smithy in the market with an unlit furnace. Henry also recognized the architecture as that of the eastern continent's Esheria Empire, also known as the Garden of Blades.

"Alright, we're here. Don't let the unlit furnace fool you, it's only because this blacksmith doesn't make weapons for just anyone."

"I see. Is there a test or something? I doubt I could pass any test that the ten star and above aura masters here couldn't pass."

"Don't worry, it's not a combat test. You'll see anyways." Eve then shouted "OLD MAN, IT'S EVE FORGER. I WANT YOU TO MAKE A SWORD FOR SOMEONE."

An old man's voice came from inside "Alright, alright, I'm not deaf, dammit."

A large and muscular man who looked very, very old opened the door. "What's that about makin' a sword? I won't spare 'em from the test just 'cause you recommended 'em."

"I know that." Eve pointed towards Henry. "This is Henry Hellwalker. He awakened a Unique Energy that's toxic to demons earlier today, and he wants to go to Hell to train it. Obviously, we're gonna need a sword, as well as for you to teach him basic maintenance of his gear."

Henry felt this was a fitting time to introduce himself. "Hello, sir. My name is Henry Hellwalker. I used to be a soldier, but now I'm training to be an independent demon hunter."

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

"Heya, I'm Jun Takeo. Let's see..... You have a unique energy, so that's +50 points. You were also polite, so +5 points. You're a mid-level Squire, so +10 points. That puts you at a total of 65 points."

"Excuse me? I'm not sure I understand."

"Basically, you have to get to a hundred points to convince me to make you a sword. I'll ask you a few questions, and if your answers satisfy me, I'll add points. And don't think about bullshitin' me, these old eyes see a lot more than you think. Alright, question one, why do you want this sword?"

Without even thinking, Henry stated his answer. "To grow my power enough to slay the demon king who killed my wife and save my daughter from his grasp."

"...Damn, as a father and husband myself, I can't help but relate. +20 points, that's 85. Second question, do you know any sword arts?"

"I only know the military sword art."

"It's bad, but it's better than nothin'. +5 points. Third and final question, do you swear to kill as little people as possible with this sword? I know I'm a blacksmith, but I've seen my swords get used in genocide before, and it's not a good feeling. It's like seeing your child become a genocidal maniac."

".......I'm afraid I can't swear that. In fact, I plan to slay as many demons as I wish. However, I can swear something else."

Jun did not seem amused but decided to let Henry talk anyways. "And what's that?"

"I can swear to never kill meaninglessly. Every time I inflict death, I will do it to save a life or avenge a death. Demons have been destroying the lives of humans and all other sentient creatures since the dawn of time. Just a few days ago, I ran into the reports of those who died or got heavily injured because of demons this month. Do you know how much there were? 760 innocents who lost their lives due to the greed of their fellow humans and the aid of the demons. And that's just the victims, not their loved ones who grieved for them. Unfortunately, I can't stop human greed. I can, however, stop the demons who aid those greedy humans, especially now that I'm one of those who lost their loved ones because of them. Usually, inflicting death only causes more death to bloom. However, I solemnly swear to you that when I inflict death, it will be to protect the fragile, beautiful flower that is life." Henry stated everything within his heart. Not a single one of those words was a lie, not a single one of them only said to impress Jun.

Hearing this, both Eve and Jun could only ponder in silence. They had both lived for so long in this state that they now found it normal. They found the death of innocents normal, and that disgusted them. This young man's ambition and desire for revenge had awakened theirs.

"....Impressive, young man. You've put me to shame. How dare I ask a Demon Slayer not to slay demons? How dare I stop humanity from putting up a fight? +110 points, that makes your total 200/100. I'll make your sword, and I'll even give you a sword art I think will benefit you greatly. Can you show me your swordsmanship?"

"Of course." Henry quickly showed all the swordsmanship forms he had learned in the army to Jun.

"Alright. Leave a sample of your Unique Energy here, I need to study it. I'll register it for you in the market's gate too, so you can come here whenever you want." Jun passed a transparent crystal to Henry. Henry then emitted his energy, and some of it was stored in the crystal.

"Good. Come back in two days. Farewell."

"Farewell, Sir Jun."

"See you, old man."

With that, Eve and Henry walked out of the market, heading back to the cathedral to continue Henry's training.
