Chapter 6: Demon Slayer

Chapter 6: Demon Slayer

Unable to stop the demon, Henry got severely frustrated.

"Dammit all! Even with this strange power, it wasn't enough. Ella, I swear I will be back for you....and if it happens that the demon has killed you by the time I arrive, I swear I will avenge you. As for you...Mirna." Henry ran towards his wife's lifeless corpse. He held her in his arms, gently shaking her. He barely contained his tears.

"Come on... Didn't you revive once? Surely you can do it again, yeah?" He put his hands in a praying position and looked towards the rising sun.

"Lord Lurius, please save my wife. Sob Please.... Isn't she Sob your saintess? Please, I'll join the church as a paladin and never ask for a salary. Just please...Sob."

He begged and begged, but there was no response. No matter what he offered, the sun just kept rising indifferently. After crying till his eyes turned red as a cherry, he picked up Mirna's corpse and started walking to the nearest church, where she can be buried. She still had traces of demonic energy on her, so nobody would suspect him of killing her or whatever.

"You were always kind of a pious worshipper of Lurius, huh? Well, I suppose a saintess would definitely go to his heaven, whatever it is, I didn't read the Book Of Light much. Haha....heh..hehe....Sob....I never thought this day would come. Sob. I had such distant hopes, that one day we'd become nobility and give our daughter a pleasant life. Give you a pleasant life. Fate really is so cruel."

After walking for what seems like hours, he arrived at Wolfsberg's Cathedral of Light. He walked in carrying a dead body, which immediately altered the priest, an elderly, kind looking man, who came running.

"What happened, my son? Wait.. Isn't this miss Mirna Hellwalker? She always came to help around in the church. And you are?"

"Her husband, Henry Hellwalker. My only evidence turned into a demon and teleported, but the crown prince...her brother, he was a Stigma of Darkness holder. He then attacked her and our daughter in a ruin in the outskirts. We fought back and managed to defeat him, but he then became a vessel for a higher demon, who killed her and kidnapped my daughter."

"And you survived? Higher demons aren't known for being very merciful."

"You're an aura master too, right? I can sense your aura. My aura turned a strange green color, and once I hit the demon, he took my daughter and teleported."

"Hmm...Can you emit your aura then?"

"Sure." The strange green energy emerged from Henry's body. The priest then touched it and closed his eyes, trying to ascertain its essence.

"This...is a Unique Energy, my son. Since even a higher demon ran away after experiencing it, it probably has some anti-demonic traits, similar to holy energy. Say, did you hear any voices in your head before you awakened this?"

Excited that someone seemed to know something about what happened, Henry talked quickly. " Yes! It said something about a new energy, and that its traits were rage, sorrow, and anti-demonic. It also called it Demon Slaying Energy."

Hearing this, the priest gasped.

" Demon Slaying Energy? The theoretical energy pope Johnathan the Fourth spent most of his later life trying to turn his aura into. And that voice, all of those who awakened Unique Energies in history have reported that they heard it and called it the Voice of the World. My son, would you be willing to join the church as a paladin? Pope Johnathan the Fourth, one of the strongest popes in the church's history, who was also known as the Demon Slayer, had always wanted to create a unique energy that could hurt demons. Plus, if you stack holy energy on your unique energy, it'll be even more toxic to demons."

Henry thought and eventually, he found his answer.

" I'm sorry, but I'm going to have to refuse. I am not one with the temperament to live as a priest. Plus, a priest slays a demon to save others from their temptation, a noble cause. Meanwhile, all I want is to avenge my wife and find my daughter."

"I see. Alright, my son. Pope Johnathan's legacy and inheritance is in Hell anyways, not in the church."

"About hell, may I know how I could go there? Also, do you think my daughter could still be alive?"

"Since the demon paid the huge mana cost of teleporting another to the underworld, he must have greater plans for her than just eating her. As for heading to Hell, I obviously have to warn you how dangerous it is. Also, awakening a Unique Energy resets your aura, so you have to train for a while before you go to Hell. I'll write a letter of recommendation to an experienced demon hunter of the church who will both train you and inform you about Hell and demons. But first, let us complete your wife's funeral."

".....Yes. Let us do that." Hesitant to part with his wife's corpse, Henry handed the body to the priest, who would cleanse it with holy water then prepare the funeral and cremation.

[A few hours later]

The priest walked in, carrying Mirna's body in a casket.

"Come, my son. Let us start the cremation."

"Yes."

In the church of light, it was tradition to cremate the dead with a special device that concentrated the sun ray's, forming immense heat. It was seen as Lurius, who ruled over the sun, claiming the body and soul of the deceased, raising them to heaven if they were good people, and destroying the soul if they were bad.

The priest put Mirna's casket in front of the device which looked like a large magnifying lens. The lens gathered the sun rays and shot them at Mirna's body, which burned very quickly. The priest then gathered the ashes and put them in a jar, giving them to Henry.

"Here, my son. You may keep these, but you should know that it is said that if you offer them to lord Lurius, the soul is more likely to go to heaven."

".....Here they are, then. If it means Mirna has better chances, I am willing to ignore my selfish desire to keep what remains of her."

" As you wish." The priest chanted some things in an ancient language that only clergymen knew, then scattered the ashes into the air, and both him and Henry watched as the ashes burned even further into nothingness.

" Lord Lurius has accepted the offering. Now, you should go and rest, son. I will alert the city guards of what happens, and vouch for your innocence."

" Thank you, Father...."

" Rico, son. Rico Ovius."

" Thank you, Father Rico."

Henry then walked to his house and opened the door. Normally, he'd be greeted by Ella and Mirna, but in just a few hours, everything had changed. He threw himself onto his bed. He remembered he should've gone back to the military base, but he had already decided that he would quit his job, as he had to go to Hell. Raising his clutched fist into the air, Henry's expression turned determined.

" I swear, I will exterminate all of demonkind and save Ella. Or just die trying. Whichever it is, I will be satisfied."

Ding!
