E118-The Journey to Nothing

E118-The Journey to Nothing

Despite the young man's concerns, the carriage began its long journey to the Ministry of Magic. By the time Apolo finished his breakfast, less time than he would have liked had passed, and there was still a long road ahead. The problem with distances was becoming increasingly evident as he spent time living in this secluded mansion.

Bored by the long journey, Apolo looked out the window, curious about the lives of other people in the capital. However, it seemed more like the lives of the servants than the nobles who supposedly lived in this place. At this early hour of the morning, Apolo could only see the servants working in the gardens.

After a few hours of curiosity, boredom once again won the battle, and Apolo's curiosity faded. So, the young man decided to do something else to pass the time and reached into one of his pockets for the old and reliable letter left by his ancestor with the steps to become a good wizard in this empire. Apolo had a second purpose for going to the Ministry of Magic today, and that was to fulfill the last piece of advice left in the dreaded letter. However, the young man's disinterested eyes while rereading the document seemed to indicate that the last piece of advice was more a waste of time than another significant step in his life.

And it was not without reason, as the fifth piece of advice was nothing less than retrieving a specific book from the Imperial Magic Library. Initially, the task seemed easy to accomplish, but there was a small problem, or rather a gigantic problem, and that problem was time: His ancestor had died more than a thousand years ago!

It was practically impossible that this specific book would still be where his ancestor had indicated in his legacy. However, there was still hope because the steps to find the book seemed complex enough to remain hidden from ignorant eyes for more than a thousand years. Nevertheless, the real problem that was crushing Apolo's hopes was precisely the people who knew about the existence of the marked book, namely the two wizards before him in his family during these thousand years. If either of the two wizards had taken the book from its hiding place following their ancestor's advice and never returned it, then it would be impossible for Apolo to fulfill this advice.

Support creative writers by reading their stories on Royal Road, not stolen versions.

These slim chances of success were what prompted Apolo to postpone this "task" to this point where there were no more pieces of advice to fulfill. In principle, Apolo was now a complete wizard, and he had already fulfilled the will of his two ancestors. This would be fantastic if there wasn't a "slight" problem: Besides fulfilling his ancestor's advice, there was no more motivation in the young noble's life.

Apolo knew it well: time had slowly given him his achievements and allowed him to fulfill his ancestors' words as he had set out to do. But now, all that remained for the young man was to fulfill the "impossible" last piece of advice and then nothingness itself: There was no more path ahead for Apolo, and he had long ago made the decision to end this senseless journey when he reached his final goal.

For Apolo, everything lacked urgency rather than meaning: Exploring the forest, the journey to the capital, filling the mansion, finding the "perfect" Gururis, raising his two Gururis, and now finding the exact edition of a book in the Imperial Library. These were meaningless goals in a senseless life, which had caused the young man to understand a long time ago how this story would end, or rather, how he wanted to end this long story.

This great tragedy began when the young man stopped exploring the forest and began his journey to the capital. It was then, at that moment, that Apolo realized that finding the cliff didn't matter at all: there was no point in exploring the forest every day, even if he finally found the cliff. The cruel reality taught the young man that he had probably been searching for it for so long only to finally be able to jump off it and end all this misery that many called life. However, Apolo never found the cliff. Whether by chance or destiny, the cliff did not appear, and here was the young noble heading to the Ministry of Magic, thinking about what would come next after he discovered that the book was no longer in its place. Or rather, thinking about how he would bid farewell to the everyday sun and what words he would write in the letter he had to send to his relatives.
