The grin stayed on Kai's face as he read the text floating before his eyes. Deciding what to do first, it's a hard choice... he decided to pick his skill first as maybe it would influence his class.
Due to the PTSD from the last skill choice, Kai said five prayers to each god he knew and opened the skill selection.
Congratulations on reaching level 10

Please select one of the four following skills
Kai's grin grew even larger as he read one of four skills instead of one of three. Having a better chance to get a good skill is always a nice bonus.
Hesitating slightly, Kai took a deep breath to calm himself, then opened the information for the first of the four skills.
Earth spike (Common): Spend 10 mana to summon a spike from the earth to impale targets. Can increase the size of the spike by spending more mana.
Kai paused and read the skill again, and again... and again. After making sure he is seeing right, he smiled.
That... that skill isn't actually that bad. Just imagining the situations you could use it in is already looking good, and being able to spend more mana to make it bigger means it won't just be a beginner skill and could potentially grow with me...
Smiling, Kai looked down at the second skill, not knowing what to think.
Identify (Uncommon): A direct upgrade to the Lesser Identify skill. Allows the user to view the level of anyone below their level or up to 10 levels above their own depending on their luck stat. Costs 15 mana per use.
Kai frowned slightly as he read the description of this one. An upgrade to a skill he already has is kind of interesting, but if it can be upgraded like this... couldn't he just upgrade it himself eventually?
And the upgrade just kind of sucks, an extra 5 mana to view an extra 5 levels higher if you get lucky... doesn't really seem worth it.
After deciding he definitely won't pick this option, Kai held his breath as he examined at the third option.
Illusionary dagger (Uncommon): Allows the user to create a semi corporeal dagger to attack with. The daggers strength is based on the users Will stat. Summoning time of the dagger is one second. Costs 5 mana per minute
Hmm... actually not that bad. Kai admitted as he looked over the description. Both this and earth spike are skills that would have a lot of utility when used right, and both would be extremely useful. A dagger you would have permanently? Sounds pretty useful.
But there was still one final skill to go, and if Kai was to go off his previous skill selection, the final offer was the best of the lot... even if the lot was utter garbage.
Feeling excited yet slightly nervous, Kai opened the final choice, knowing that even if it sucks he either had Earth spike or Illusionary dagger to fall back on.
Contract of Artemis (Rare): Allows the user to create a contract with a non humanoid creature within 15 levels of them. Any XP the creature earns, so will the master. The contracted creature will have an added bonus of 10% of each of the masters stats.
"..." Kai didn't know what to think after reading the final skill. On one hand, the skill seems incredibly strong, but on the other hand... where is he meant to find a creature? At this point a few of his skills mention them but he has yet to see any... Maybe in stage three of the tutorial?
You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.
If there is a stage three.
Pushing aside the thought for now,
Kai thought carefully about his options. Illusionary dagger is an offensive skill that would be extremely useful in the right situations... but couldn't he just get a normal dagger eventually?
Earth spike appealed to Kai the most at this point. You can use it to attack, to slow someone down, to defend, to climb up. It's an all around amazing skill. But sadly... there is still the third option.
Contract of Artemis looks like a good skill, plus it would be his first rare skill, shouldn't rare skills be better? Contracting a creature would make things much easier by having a familiar, and the stronger you get the stronger your familiar gets. Plus whatever XP the familiar gets Kai also gets.
He always enjoyed the necromancer class in the novels he read, and also the beast taming novels. Isn't this skill basically just that?
A long time passed as Kai racked his brain, trying to narrow down the best choice. And eventually, he decided on what to pick.
[Contract of Atremis (Rare)] selected.
After much more thinking than he would like to admit, Kai picked the skill Contract of Artemis. Giving up Earth spike hurt his soul, but Kai knew it would eventually be useless to him. Plus, he also had the Telepathy skill, this would allow him to talk to his familiar as the skill said any sentient creature can have their mind linked with his.
Sighing a bit, Kai remembered he still had another problem to deal with, an even worse one at that... Class selection.
Class selection unlocked
Please select one of the three following classes
So I only get 3 options... Kai's eyebrows furrowed. Even though three is a good amount, what if he gets a bad class?
Slowly, Kai looked at the text, reading the first option.
Seer (Uncommon): Combines your mana and luck stat to be able to catch glimpses of the future. Grants a temporary bonus to your dexterity and strength after dodging a fatal attack you've forseen. Provides +4 mana, +2 luck and +4 unnasigned stat points per level up
Kai froze.
That...that option is actually pretty good. Glimpses of the future would be pretty handy in a fight, but it doesn't say the mana cost though... And a bonus to stats after dodging a fatal attack seems pretty good as well.
Happy with his first option, Kai looked down to the second one... and felt his mind turn numb.
Scribe of the Archdemon Belphegor (Epic): Becoming a scribe for an archdemon requires a strong mind and vast amounts of knowledge. Enter a spiritual connection with the Archdemon where they provide you knowledge and you provide them your soul. Entering the spiritual connection contains a 60% chance of death. Provides +6 mana, +6 will and +6 unnasigned stat points per level up.
What...the hell... 60% chance of death? Hell no! But those stats though...
The second option is quite a strange one, which Kai was still considering. The stats are almost double what the Seer class gave, and obtaining knowledge from an Archdemon?... Still, after a few minutes of intense thinking, the 60% chance of death throws him off. Kai then looks to the third and final option.
Apprentice of The Ever-changing (Epic): Become the apprentice of one who has no true form, becoming anyone or anything. Provides +18 unnasigned stat points per level up.
"...." Even though Kai didn't know what to think for the second option, he really doesn't know what to think for this one. The Ever-changing? Eighteen unnasigned stat points per level?
What? Even though it has no added bonuses, it gives eighteen unnasigned stat points. This class seems pretty strong as well...Agh! Why are choices so hard?
After much hesitation, deliberation and maybe some regret, Kai picks the option his gut told him to pick. He always trusted his gut, and it had yet to fail him thus far.
Apprentice of The Ever-changing (Epic) selected.
Kai ended up picking becoming an apprentice over a seer. The main reason for this was that Kai is now going to be gaining eighteen unnasigned stat points per level instead of six assigned one and four unnasigned ones.
If epic classes give eighteen stat points per level, and uncommon give ten...Does that mean rare would give fourteen stat points and common giving six? Would a legendary class give twenty-two?
Pretty happy with his pick, Kai noticed Noelle begin to wake up. Walking over to his bed and rubbing his sore cheek from sleeping on the floor, Kai sat down and asked "So... did you pick your class?"
Noelle looked at him blankly, as if internally deciding whether to answer him or just pretend he was a fly on the wall. After what seemed like an internal battle between two superpowers inside her head, she finally sighed and answered.
"Yes... but don't ask about it, I won't tell you."
Well that was to be expected... but at least she answered.
Kai smiled slightly, happy she answered him instead of scowling and telling him to piss off... which did happen a few times since they were paired.
But just as Kai was about to ignore her warning and ask her another question, the voice they have heard so many times before spoke again.
