Chapter 51 – Fear the Night, Unsheathe the Saber, Thread the Fate (V)

A youth was exiting a house in the north of the border city of Cali.

The house, though not the best in the town, was beautiful enough to be considered a high-class residence. In all the town of Cali, there were less than twenty houses better than it.

Living in such place, the youth was obviously not ordinary, and it could be seen from how he was dressed.

With a black coat covering his upper body and pants made with expensive silk, the youth exuded an obvious atmosphere of elegance. A playful smile decorated his face, and his striking black and red hair combined with his equally striking red eyes were more than enough for most girls to look him adoringly.

This night however, almost nobody was there to admire his elegance. With the commotion occurring in the town, most commoners were too afraid to even think about leaving their houses.

The cultivators, in the other hand, had their own worries preventing them to leaving their places of residence.

It was the reason because the black-red haired youth didn’t find it surprising when a black-white haired youth was waiting for him when he left the house.

“Where are you going, Clearance?”

“Allen, my friend!” Playfully said the black-red haired youth, Clearance, seeing who was waiting for him. “I didn’t think that you were also interested in taking a stroll.”

“Stop with the jokes.” Frowned Allen. “You heard when the town hall warned us to no interfere with the situation tonight. Where are you going then?”

“Don’t worry, don’t worry. Everything will be alright!”

Hearing the carefree tone of his companion, Allen frowned even harder. He already knew about Clearance’s personality. Due it, he immediately suspected that something was wrong when he saw the playful smile hanging on his face.

“Our orders were only to recollect information and wait for the reinforcements from the clan, Clearance. The clan master emphasized about not causing trouble before the reinforcements are here. I don’t think it’s right for you to leave now.”

“Sigh, you are always so strict.” Murmured the black-red haired youth with an obvious theatric expression. “Don’t worry, I promise you that I will not cause troubles to the family.”

Despite hearing Clearance’s words, Allen continued blocking the path of his companion. After all, it was not the first time that he did something like it.

But after seeing him continuing to smile for almost a minute, he ended suspiring.

“Sigh. Okay, go. But I’m going to inform the clan about it.”

“Hahaha, you are always so understating, Allen. I will bring you a souvenir.”

With a joyful expression, the black-red haired boy smiled widely and walked pass his companion. Then, when he was about leave his companion sight, he turned and spoke.

This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there.

“Oh, I almost forgot. Tell the elders that I have a gift for them. I will show it to them when they reach the town.”

“Uh? Okay.” With a lost expression, the black-white haired youth nodded to his companion. Then, as if remembering something, he shouted towards him.

“Oh right, you haven’t said what are you going to do tonight, Clearance?”

“Nothing much.” Answered the smiling youth with a playful tone. “I’m only going to hunt an unlucky fox.”

“… Fox?” With an expression of doubt, the black-white haired youth saw the figure of his companion disappear.

Even after a long time, he was unable to understand the words that his companion left behind.

Looking towards the direction where the two fights were happening, a young woman was standing above the roof of a house.

With a strict expression in her face, the woman heard the sounds of clashes and explosions coming from the place where the two groups were fighting. But despite her wishes to interfere, she was unable to do anything.

“Halt! Nobody has allowed to pass this place tonight. Return to your house.”

Looking downwards, the woman saw one of her subordinates stopping a young man from going towards the place of the commotion.

It wasn’t the first time something like it happened tonight, so the woman didn’t pay attention to the youth initially. But after the youth spoke, she was forced to interfere.

“I have to speak with you commander. Call him here!”

Frowning with irritation, the woman jumped down from the roof and walked towards the place where the youth was being stopped. Then, with a strict face, she spoke.

“What do you want?”

“Are you the commander?” Said the youth with a playful tone. “I need go to the place where the fight is happening.”

“We received orders from the city lord to not leave anybody to interfere. You are not exception.”

“is it so?” Asked the youth smilingly. “Why don’t you ask to your superior then? Tell them that I’m related to the fight.”

“Related?” Asked the woman, an obvious displeasure in her face. “How are you related?”

“We are family.”

Frowning, the woman called one of her subordinates. Then, while whispering something to him, she asked something to the youth with a menacing expression.

“Your name.”

“Clearance Noah, miss.”

“Leave me ask then.”

Waving her subordinate away, the woman looked towards the youth with a hardened expression. He, however, continued smiling calmly while waiting for the answer.

After around five minutes later, the subordinate finally returned in a fluster. Then, whispering something in the woman ear, he left.

The woman made a furious expression hearing the words of her subordinate. But at the end, she simply snorted and spoke to the youth without hiding the rage in her voice.

“Go, the city lord said that you have allowed to enter.”

Bowing slightly, the youth walked through the blockade of the city guards. All while maintaining his playful smile.

Seeing it, the woman struggled to maintain her calm. But at the end, she could only to sigh and turned away.

When the youth finally left, one of her subordinates approached to the woman. He was a young man, roughly around twenty years old. She remembered that it wasn’t long ago from the moment when he became a city guard.

The youth hesitated before the woman. But after a few seconds, he finally gritted his teeth and asked.

“Captain, why are we waiting here while those foreigners destroy our town!? Are we supposed to see them fight without doing anything!?”

For a moment, the place stayed silent.

“… It’s not so simple, young man.” Sighed the woman helplessly. “It’s not so simple.”

Thinking her words carefully, the woman opened her mouth.

“Though the cultivators obey our words inside the town, it’s not because they fear us. They simply fear the power of the city lord.

“Tonight, the city lord told us to not interfere and simply prevent anyone from entering. What else can we do then?”

The youth made a difficult expression hearing the woman speaking. However, he continued gritting his teeth and clenching his fist.

Understating the thoughts passing through her subordinate’s mind, the woman simply sighed and shocked her head.

“You didn’t understand. Though we are strong, it’s only when compared with normal humans. In front cultivators, we are nothing more than servants, unworthy of talking to them directly and being easily killed with only a wave of their hands.”

With a faraway look, the woman spoke in a depressed tone.

“For them, a mortal life probably is less valuable than grass.”
