3. I must be one lucky boy

3. I must be one lucky boy

One second I was in that comforting void the next I was in a dark tunnel holding a knife in one hand and a flashlight in the other. Taking a quick look around I saw a very familiar young man leaning against a nearby wall.

“So what class did you get Zain?” the young man called out to me.

Zain… that must be my name. A dam broke in my mind and memories flooded me. I was Zain Miller, a recent high school graduate, and my now ex-girlfriend of 5 years had broken up with me. Something about no future with me and I’ll never amount to anything. Ah jokes oh her, I saved humanity.

I have two parents, Dave and Julia Miller, who I have lived with for the past 18 years of my life. Neither knows I’m in the tower, which was pretty rude of my past self. When I had broached the idea up a year ago they were adamantly against it.

But going back to why I entered the tower that whole ex-girlfriend thing happened about 5 hours ago. I’m with Tyler, the young man, as we’re trying our luck in the tower for the express purpose of getting lots and lots of money. Well, I guess I was right about why I was in the tower.

“Hey, Zain you feeling ok. We can do this another time if you aren’t” Tyler asked worried that his friend a just stared at him for the last 20 seconds without answering.

Tyler had been my best friend since 2nd grade. We had gone through highs and lows, ups and downs. He had always been by my side until he died during the first monster wave. Now you might think that I would start crying and hug him. But you would be wrong. It’s what I wanted to do but the chances of past me doing that were super low and it would probably just freak him out more.

This book is hosted on another platform. Read the official version and support the author's work.

“Earth to Zain. Hello, anyone in there.” Tyler said as he waved his hand in front of my face.

“Sorry, was spacing out. Can you repeat that again” I said while trying to emulate my past self.

“Oh, you’re back, Just asking what class you got. I got novice warrior, so don’t be too jealous” Tyler said while waging his finger.

Ok, Zain time for the real challenge of this tower. Not sounding like ‘novice hexer’ isn’t the greatest insult anything has ever used against me ever.

“Ya, well you might be jealous of mine I got curs… I mean novice hexer” I smoothly recover.

“That is a support class right, it should go well with mine. Now the fun part say ‘status’” Tyler excitingly tells me. Right before his eye flick to the screen that must have just popped up.

Humoring him I call up my stat screen for the first time in decades.
