Chapter 15 - Terrible trio

Christine took longer than expected in surveying damage to the surrounding woods. She had only expected to take half of an hour but she had instead spent two hours. She absentmindedly mused to herself that perhaps she wasn't as good at estimating time as she thought she was.

While checking what had been done to the forest by the storm she saw a blacked tree. As Christine circled it she realized the damage had probably been caused by lightning during the storm. But besides this burnt tree, the only other major change was the closest stream was flooded and branches were broken throughout the forest.

It was only after she had arrived back at her den that she decided to sleep in a nearby bush until her den was empty of water.

Normally at this point she would go hunting but she was full so she decided to do a bit of exploration instead of her usual hunt.

It was hours after trekking through the forest and finding nothing particularly interesting when she finally saw something out of the ordinary or rather she heard it. Snuffling and snarls came from directly ahead of Christine through some thick bushes.

As she stealthily peered through the bushes she saw a trio of monsters she had unfortunately seen before. These creatures were of the same species she had been ambushed by that one time. These horrifying monsters were tearing into the corpse of what appears to be a deer.

The raptor subconsciously stiffened as she saw these three terrifying monsters with blood on their muzzles. She slowly backed away and fortunately for her it appeared that the horrors had somehow not noticed Christine despite her proximity. She silently fled the scene. It was only after she was at least half a mile away that she realized how tense her body was and deeply breathed in as she loosened up.

It hadn't been long since she’d last seen one of those creatures but that seemed to make this encounter even more terrifying.

‘What am I going to do about these monsters,” she thought miserably to herself.

She kept seeing them and she knew she couldn't keep avoiding them unless she managed to get even more stealthy than she already was.

Christine only then realized she had just been calling them monsters or creatures but not a distinct name when thinking. She decided to call them ghouls, like the tales of undead from her previous world.

Slightly embarrassed by her distraction, she shook her head as she focused back on the real problem. The ghouls could very well kill Christine and she obviously didn't like that risk.

But what could she do about it? The one time she had fought a ghoul she had barely survived and while she had become more adept with her current body since then she still didn't like her odds against one let alone several.

However, there was one other potential option, one she hadn't thought about much since her arrival in this new world.

Magic. She had seen it happen only once when that injured man had used it against the terrifyingly powerful ghoul but perhaps she could do the same against any she may run into.

‘All I have to do is figure out how to use it,’ Christine thought to herself wryly.
