Chapter 10 - The den is finished

Digging. That was the word that summarizes what Christine had been doing the past day and a half since she had killed that capybara-like beast. After she had finished eating the capybara beast and returned home she had returned to digging out her home and kept on doing so for a day and a half. Christine had dug enough that she could fit her whole body in the tunnel but she hadn't yet fully created a den where she could comfortably sleep.

However, she couldn't just keep digging, she wanted to eat and while she could go longer without food she didn’t want to keep going without food. Afterall, Christine hadn’t eaten for a day and a half. She spent the rest of the day hunting, by the end of the day she had caught three rabbits and a couple of quail. It wasn’t much for her but it was something. Once she arrived home she once again started digging. Christine finally finished digging out her den by the end of the next day.

As she was curled up in her den for the night, she realized she had no goals. Now, she knew she wanted to catch enough food to live on, but she wanted more in life than just getting enough to eat from day to day. Christine wasn't sure of a major goal but she knew she did want to get to know the area. After a minute, Christine admitted to herself that she wanted to investigate those sentients more as well and maybe even find a way to communicate.

Soon afterwards she fell asleep and when she woke up the next morning she went on a hunting trip. As she stalked through the forest she saw a pair of the capybara monsters. Similar to several days prior she decided to attempt to kill one of them but this time she had the element of surprise. Christine snuck closer to them as they grazed but as she did, something snapped. Surprised, it took her a second to realize she had stepped on a branch. By then the pair of monsters were running as fast as they could from her and so she chased after them. Christine chased the two for several minutes but they managed to outrun the raptor.

Returning to her home in defeat, she thought about her failure of a hunt and realized she had gotten cocky lately. Losing a single hunt wasn’t that big of a deal but she had expected to easily catch one of the two beasts. The thing was that Christine had been overestimating herself and if she had decided to attack something too dangerous it could have gone badly. She didn’t think she would have attacked a creature that was too dangerous but being cocky in general is unwise. Christine decided to go hunting again, she probably shouldn’t have returned home if she was going to hunt again but her emotions had been jumbled and she had wanted a safe place to think. When hunting she managed to catch a couple squirrels that she quickly ate. Interestingly she also killed a badger that she had come across by chance when it emerged from its burrow. Eating the badger, Christine noticed it tasted different from most of the other things she had eaten as a raptor. Not better or worse, just different and realized it was probably because of the badger’s diet. Since she had finished hunting that day, she decided to go exploring for a few hours before night fell.
