Chapter 9: No rest

Jacob woke up early and saw Turner sitting in the middle of a circle of trees that the group slept in keeping watch. Turners' eyes were actively looking for any signs of trouble, a slight smile appeared as he saw Jacob

"Ho there Turner, good work how are you doing today?" Jacob said, a swift reply by Turner followed

"Much better than yesterday, somehow it still feels like a fever dream being dropped into this place without any warning. Being forced to run from the get go, waking up to see inhuman beings staring at us and seeing a l-live butchering session. The screams from Ronald are still in my ears, I just wanna go home to my wife and enjoy the cracking of firewood in peace without fearing that something can come out and kill us in a moment. Do you think I can see my wife again Jacob?"

Silence reigned as Jacob did not want to give Turner any false hope , lying about his personal experience is one thing. False comfort will do no one any good.

"We can only try our best, Turner my friend if we do not even try we would had already failed before it even began. At least with Jacob helping us we can stand a chance of fighting back that puts us miles ahead compared to having to fumble around blindly through this Tutorial. If we manage to get Jobs by today it would put us in a better position, Alex is a good example of what we can achieve once we do."

replied Alexander while waking up from his slumber and moving to sit up from his sleeping position even such simple movements from Alexander made Jacob conscious of himself causing Jacob to straighten himself.

Jacob found himself agreeing with Alexander unsure if it was subconsciously caused by his good looks or not but if the group all got uncommon Jobs even killing the tigers to level up regularly within the time limit would not be a stretch by any means. The stone hands proved to be no challenge to Jacob after obtaining his Job and Flowing Water, if he can ambush a tiger from above he could end the fight even before it began with a swift stab through the eyes.

Smiling at the thought he did a quick check as expected all killing related requirements increased by 4 with , his eyes lit up when he saw that he reached level 8. It seems that killing those 5 netted more essence than 22 stone hands. But he had to kill 5 likely sentient beings to do so that left a bad taste in his mouth even the slight revel he had when eviscerating three of them together did not overcome the feelings of disgust at what he did.

"Something good happened to you Jacob?" Alexander asked as the wide smile and gleeful expression on Jacobs' face was too hard to ignore.

'I'm not alone anymore I shouldn't lose myself in my emotions this easily.'

Jacob tried schooling his expression to neutral replying Alexander while doing so.

"Killing those 5 allowed me to level up to 8." He kept his sentence as short as possible to prevent leaking out unneeded info accidentally.

"I see, congratulations! I'm looking forward to when all of us get to feel the warm feeling you described when essence enters as soon as possible." Alexander beamed a hopeful smile as he spoke, brightening his surrounding just a little bit as he did so.

'Being attractive never felt more like a superpower to me than right now, if he gets a Job he might be able to light up the sky'

Jacob scorned in his mind still jealous of Alexanders' chiseled look and broad shouldered physique.

"I'll go wake up the oaf and Riley" Jacob said and walked off trying to avoid this walking ray of sunshine.

"Oh let me join you I would like to apologise to Brian for yesterday even if it was a difficult situation. Calling him an oaf was uncalled for." Alexander caught up to Jacob easily as he replied. It seems like the sunshine is stuck onto Jacob, a frown crossed his face for a short moment.

The two were sleeping not too far away from Alexander anyways as they slept in a circle maintaining the barest of decency for Riley where they put up some leaf covers for her. Not that leaf covers would stop a giant tiger or whatever actually calls the forest its home, even throughout the night try as he might. Jacob did not even see a trace of the supposed forest inhabitants alluded by the Suzerain, as Jacob moved to wake the oaf up first mostly because he wanted Riley to rest as much as possible.

He discovered the oaf was nowhere to be seen, he looked to his right catching Alexanders' eyes he saw the look of shock in his eyes and he saw the same look of shock on his own face reflected in Alexanders' eyes both for and through ran the nearby leaf covers marking Rileys' sleeping area. Bursting through the covers they saw that she too was nowhere to be seen.
