Chapter 39: Persistence of Jacob

Chapter 39: Persistence of Jacob

As the duo of Riley and Jacob sat beside the fire, waiting for the deer to cook. Jacob let out a sigh after he finally settled his thoughts from missing his recent memories, he decided to ask Riley what happened to him.

“So Riley, how did I end up in your tent? I only remember finishing the 4th set of the practice, Brian took us through.”

“I really don’t know much either, I was woken up by the sounds. When I got up, I recognised the sounds of crying so I went out of the tent to check. When I did, I saw Brian coming out from his tent the same time I did, both of us turned to where the sounds came from. We saw you laying near the campfire crying, I scooped you right up and held you until you fell asleep.” Riley replied off the top of her head. Jacob visibly winced during some parts of her talking.

“I see...I felt some tiny needles poking me when you mentioned that I was crying and laying down on the floor. I really wanna find the missing memories, I feel that it contains important information. Do you happen to know any way to do it?” Jacob asked with a little hope in his heart.

“Sorry Jacob, I really want to help you but I did not learn hypnotism.” Riley replied sincerely, Jacob heart sunk a little but replied still hopeful.

“Its alright, maybe Aurelius has a way. Given how much he seems to know” Silence entered the atmosphere as the duo waits quietly for the deer to cook with Jacob turning the spit, liquid fat slowly dripping onto the fire increasing the heat.

As the suns began to set and the moons started to take their place in the sky, Aurelius and Brian returned with a big load of leatherskins container all filled to the brim with oil in multiple sacks.

Brian was dragging a bear and boar on a makeshift pallet. They found Jacob and Riley hard at practice, Jacob was going through sword practice and Riley was working on her unarmed combat.

“Young Jacob! Nice to see you out and about, feeling better?” Brian asked enthusiastically as he placed a boar beside Aurelius.

“Thank you for asking Brian, I don’t recall what happened so I can only say I feel as good as ever. I do get flashes of pain whenever I try to recall the events that led to me crying on the floor though. Oh Aurelius, do you have anyways to bring back memories?” Jacob stopped his practice midway as he replied. Aurelius replied putting some emphasis on the repercussions.

“I do, I do not recommend going through the process though. If your subconcious or someone took the memory away from you, seeing what it led you to do. It would have to be something really bad.”

“If I don’t know what happened to me, how would I know it was something bad?” Jacob countered

“Those flashes of pain you mentioned is already an indication, but if you really want to do it. I can help you, I am also interested in what happens once you recovered the memories.” Aurelius replied with a glint in his eyes. Riley jumped into the conversation, she stopped her practice and ran to join the trio when she heard them speaking with each other.

“Jacob, I saw the aftermath of what happened. You really would not want the same thing to happen, you might just go through the same pain for nothing. Even if its important, surely you can wait until you are stronger no? From what we discovered the more you have in your mind stats the stronger your mental defences will be. Do reconsider.”

“I agree with Riley, young Jacob. Even if you remember what was shown, would the pain be worth the cost? You were a sobbing mess and you didn’t even remember that, the memories are gone for a reason.” Brian chimed in support of Riley

“Well...If you guys put it this way. I’ll drop the subject for now, lets get started on food. I’m starving.” Jacob cast a reluctant look on Aurelius as he gave in to the persuasion. The glint in the eyes of Aurelius never left as he continued to look at Jacobs’ back.

The group had a hearty meal with the boar and bear, Aurelius and Brian shared what happened during the hunt for the day. Brian had a close shave when he found a pack of bears, he was already backing away. But one of the smaller bears saw him retreating and did a few small roars, alerting the 5 bigger bears of his presence. That initiated a mad chase as he ran as hard as he could while he traced back his steps to look for Aurelius, while the bears did not catch up to him during the run. They remained a persistent lot as they followed Brian through the long run.

After Brian managed to locate Aurelius through beads of sweat, who was collecting oil from the multiple hanging corpses. Brian let his guard down as he began to call for Aurelius, the bear in the lead crashed into Brian head first sending him flying through the trees. He was knocked out for the fight that ensued.

Aurelius did not provide any colour to the fight, only describing his actions. Which was basically him, giving each bear a punch to the head. Enough to rock the skull, followed by another to crush the skull while the bear was disoriented.

With the moons hanging high in the sky above, the group turned in for the night after setting up the shifts. Jacob had the first shift, followed by Aurelius, Riley and Brian. After he waited for his shift to pass patiently, he went to wake up Aurelius for his.

He walked to the tent housing Aurelius and he chuckled a little at how Aurelius slept. This time he looked even more like a vampire, his arms were crossed infront of his chest. There were no signs of him breathing at all or it could be so shallow that the chest does not even rise. But he was able to run in the sun with no problems, Jacob had no mirrors or garlic to check. But if Aurelius is immune to the sun, he might have no obvious weaknesses. Jacob shrugged, it did not matter for now. He allocated all his free points to mind.

He shook the shoulders of Aurelius, after a few shakes Aurelius woke up the same way he did when Brian woken him up. His eyes were immediately on alert, scanning the surroundings.

“That was a short nap, so are you ready to recall your memories?” Aurelius did a small smirk as he asked.

“Yes, I’m ready. Lets go to the campsite, if I’m incapacitated again atleast I would not be blocking your exit.” Jacob replied voice filled with determination
