I wipe the blood off my gauntlet and stare at Samantha's unconscious body. We were pitted against each other today and I doubt she would still be my friend after this. I look up at the adults who are smiling wickedly as they lower the ladder for me. I'm now sitting at a table, getting scolded for eating on an even calendar day. My brother is dragged away to face punishment for me eating and I plead for mercy, but the adults only smile more. Me and my brother are back in the pit, but today is our tenth birthday, which means we have to fight the adult with the sharp teeth. He grins from ear to ear. He's going to devour us like he did to Samantha last week and everyone else who turned ten.

Even when I transform into a weapon, I can't stop trembling in fear… he's holding us both by our throats against the wall, drooling over us. We're battered and bruised, we lasted longer than most, but we couldn't even land a hit on him. He smiles and his mouth stretches wider and wider. "Choose who gets eaten first," he says, looking at me. I shut my eyes tight and sob.

There's a flash of light and I almost fall to the ground, but someone catches me. He puts me and my brother down and I see Kenshin eggs floating outside the pit and where the adult who was going to eat us was.

I look up and see a man with a wide smile that doesn't fill me with dread and a star-shaped scar on his shoulder. He puts his hands on his hips and shouts, "No need to fear, for the one and only Blackstar is here, a hero who shall surpass God!" He puts his hand on my head and I don't flinch for the first time from an adult's touch…

I wake up and feel my brother tucking a blanket around me. I try to remember everything that happened as I take in my surroundings. Our meister showed up just in time to save us. Then we defeated the monster in a huge explosion… It was awesome, she made such a cool first impression. I feel pumped up and get out of bed and start making it while wondering if we're cool enough for our meister. I look up as my brother comes into the room and peeks out the door behind him. He whispers to me that she's coming. I meet his eyes with a serious face.

I tell him, "Hero's pose #2."

We both wait with our heads down, holding back the excitement bubbling in our chests as I tell them to come in.
