Chapter 8

*Jadan

I groan as I wake up and pull the blanket over Jada. I spot our bag on the floor and stuff Brox back inside. I feel a sudden urge to pee and head for the door. As I step into the hallway, I hear someone talking.

"What do you mean?" He basically told you to wait and see. I'm not some hote-"

"Excuse me, where can I find the restroom?" I interrupt, seeing an adult with a fake smile on his face. He points me to the bathroom and I hurry there. I remind myself to tell Jada later that we are not welcome here. I wash my hands and count to ten. I smile because we have a meister now. Even if the fake smiling adult hates us, she can stay with us. We can build a treehouse again and hunt monsters.

I leave the bathroom and walk back to the bedroom where Jada is sleeping. I stop in front of the door. Was there a traffic sign on it before? I don't remember noticing it, but maybe someone put it there while I was gone. I shrug and open the door. I gasp at the sight of the room. It's full of books and tools, cluttering every surface. I hear a squeak and turn to my right. There's a girl with silver eyes that I've never seen before.

"Sorry, wrong room," I mumble.

"That's okay, I was just doing some weapon maintenance." The girl puts down some tools and takes a deep breath. She disappears in a flash of rose petals and reappears in front of me. I stumble back and fall against the door, closing it with a bang. She winces and offers me her hand.

"Sorry about that. Hi, my name's Ruby Rose. I'm Yang's sister. What's yours?"

I take her hand and let her pull me up. I smile. Yang. Is that our meister's name?

"Hi, I'm Jadan. I'm Yang's demon weapon." I say, almost giggling. Before I forget, I cross my arms and turn my left hand into a metal fist. I strike my hero pose, pulling my left hand back and raising my fist while looking up. I wait for a second and look back at Ruby. She's staring at me with her mouth open and her face red.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

*Ruby

I feel a wave of horror and embarrassment wash over me. This is how Yang must feel when I start rambling about guns to non-hunters. Oh god, he's waiting for me to say something.

"Good...I mean...yeah, wow, you sure did it."

He looks proud now. Oh no, he's going to go through life thinking that was okay and end up as a jobless hermit who dies of hunger. I can't live with that guilt. Yang saved him and I killed his future self. No, I have to fix this. He's opening the door, he's leaving, it's now or never, you can do this Ruby.

"Wait...the door is across the hall, that's where you guys...were."

"Thanks, ."

I drop to my knees and hold back the tears. I couldn't do it. The innocent joy in his eyes when he did his superhero pose...I can't break that...I failed him.

"Why are you on the floor, Rubes?"

I jump to my feet and dust myself off.

"Oh nothing, don't worry about it, in fact forget you saw anything."

I rush over to the desk where I was working and grab Ember Celica and hand them to her.

"I woke up early and had some free time so I oiled the gears and checked the shift gears while I was at it. Since it was already open, I decided to top off the grease inside as well. I was thinking maybe another chamber for dust rounds but I need your help deciding where it should fit on it."

I see the confusion on Yang's face turn into a genuine smile as she wraps her arms around me.

"Thanks, Rubes, let's go check on our guest."

With an awkward laugh, I look away.

"Yeah, about that...I met the boy earlier...he called himself your demon weapon...then he made a superhero pose." I pause as the memory comes back to me and look into Yang's eyes with teary eyes.

"Yang, it was the most embarrassing thing I've ever seen...you have to tell him he can't do that."

"Pfft, it couldn't have been that bad...let's go check on them."

As Yang knocks on the door, I hear a soft rustling from inside. A female voice invites us to come in. We enter and see them standing side by side, their heads bowed. They look like they rehearsed this. They lift their heads in sync and cross their arms in an X shape. Their hands glow with metallic colors, white for the girl and black for the boy. They jump up raising their fist and shout in union.

"Ready for justice!" "Ready for justice!"

Oh no, not another one. I feel a wave of embarrassment wash over me again. I glance at Yang, who looks like she's zoned out.
