Chapter 2

*Jada

I dodge a swipe of the beast's claw but lose my balance on the slippery grass.

My brother backs away from the bear, sizing it up for a moment before lunging forward. It's a monstrous thing, ten feet tall, with a bony mask covering its face and part of its body. It reeks of madness and malice. A fitting welcome to this strange new world, where we feel right at home. He grunts as he uses me as a shield, then spins around with the force of the blow and smashes the bear's mask, cracking it open.

I grab the broken mask and vault onto the beast's back, clutching one of the spiky bones that protrude from its hide. I find my footing and pound its skull until I hear a crunch and tumble to the ground. I stare at the thing in my hand. A Kishin egg? But it's inverted, black with red veins. I squeeze it lightly and sniff it. It smells the same as the ones we know. I shrug and decide to keep it for later. My brother materializes next to me and I toss him the inverted Kishin egg, or ike, as I call it. I rummage through our bags for a jar. "It tastes sweeter but less chewy," he says. I stiffen and look at him. "What did you say?" He repeats himself, oblivious to my horror. "Spit it out right now! You don't know what that is or where it came from! Three wolves on their hind legs burst into our clearing. I transform into my weapon form, a white gauntlet, as he gets ready to fight. We've been here for ten minutes and we've already been attacked twice by mad creatures. Either we landed in the worst spot of this forest or thi-.

I slap one of the wolf things with my gauntlet hand, feeling the kinetic energy build up inside my brother. My brother's weapon form starts to bulge with bumps as I charge at another wolf and punch it in the chest. The stored energy blasts a hole through its body big enough to crawl through, but then the third wolf knocks me down. It glares at me with eyes full of hate and madness. I grin back at it.

I ignore my brother's pleading eyes as I put the three new ikes in our bag. I pull out Dr. Stein's soul counter watch and hand it to him. It shows us our progress.

65.2 souls collected

I toss him one of the normal Kishin eggs from this world and he gobbles it up without hesitation. Such a glutton.

65.4 souls collected

"Partial souls turned into mad monsters that attack on sight. Jadan, doesn't this sound familiar?" "Witch." "Witch."

We smile at each other and head in a random direction. "Just like home, Jadan. Home sweet home."
