Chapter 11

*Ozpin

I replay the recording Qrow sent me and add some more notes to my pad. Witches, souls, demonic pacts, red string, portals, and a death god who ran a school for demon weapons and meisters. Not the most outlandish thing a bored deity has done in their free time. Having had the misfortune of meeting two I can easily believe one would do such a thing. I get up to pour myself some more coffee, grateful that Glenda made it. As I contemplate this new piece on the board. I wonder if that was history or a fairytale passed down. The power the gods feared…

Taking a sip of coffee I ring up Glenda. It seems 's admission papers to Beacon are going to need some reworking.

A week later

*Taiyang

I gasp for air as waves of dizziness, nausea, and aura exhaustion wash over me. Jada and Jaden are both crouching next to me, clutching their heads in pain. Qrow and Ruby are no better off. Qrow collapsed and was pinned to the floor by some invisible force when he tried to wield the demon weapon. Ruby managed to lift her hands with the gauntlets on, but her aura drained rapidly for a couple of seconds before she had to let go. I did slightly better than Ruby, throwing a punch before the soul rejection hit me like a truck.

"It's not enough to use your fists as weapons, you have to be a pot meister!" Jada whines as she stands up and looks at me with a pale face. She sees Qrow and turns green. "Ugh, I feel sick just looking at him."

"I bet that's how most women feel after-" Yang starts to say, but I cut her off with a sharp tone.

"Yang." I don't want to hear any jokes right now. I'm still feeling queasy myself. I get up and pat Jaden on the shoulder as I walk toward the house. "Burgers and fries?" I ask him, seeing his eyes light up. I don't wait for his answer and head for the kitchen.

I take out the burgers and turn on the stove. I look out the window and see Yang fighting with Ruby, Jada, and Jaden with her bare hands. Ruby still needs to work on her footwork. While Yang is away at Beacon, we'll train her on that and improve her weakness. I put some fries in the fryer and flip the burgers on the pan.

I put a burger and fries with a cup of water in the twins' room and place the rest on the table. As they come inside and see the food, Jaden grabs his plate, thanks me, and goes to their room with his sister. She follows him silently, avoiding eye contact with anyone. I clench my fist, thinking about what they went through. How could anyone hurt those little angels? I look at my little angels and sigh. I guess it doesn't matter which world it is, the world is full of monsters in human form.

I bite into my burger and frown as I look outside.

"How long do you think he'll be out?" I ask.

"Old man, food's ready!" Ruby shouts out the window.

I see Qrow stir, pull out his flask and take a sip. He stays on the ground. I finish my plate and notice the mail carrier turning the corner. I rinse my mouth with some water and run my hand through my hair before opening the door.

"Good morning, Diana. How's your day going? Do you want to come in for a drink? It's pretty hot today." She's cute and no older than thirty. She blushes and giggles.

"Oh, Taiyang, it's Saturday. Your kids are home, and I'm running late. I can't." She quickly hands me my mail and bites her lower lip. Then she gives me a card. "I'm off on Mondays," she says with a blush before walking away.

I tuck the card in my pocket and turn around to see my daughters staring at me with shock and disgust on their faces. Before I can say anything, Qrow walks past me toward the table.

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure your old man slept with every woman over 25 in a ten-mile radius. It's why so many of your friends' parents are looking to divorce."

"That's-"

"I knew it! I thought it was weird how moms were trying to introduce me to their kids!" Ruby yells, pointing a fork at me.

I ignore their accusations and look through the mail until I see a thin letter from Beacon.

I walk over to the table and hold it out for Yang.

"It looks kind of thin for an acceptance letter. What do you think, Qrow?"

Qrow smirks wickedly and pretends to be sympathetic.

"Oh no, little firecracker, I'm sorry to hear you were rejected. You can always apprentice under me."

Yang tries to grab the letter from me, but I keep it out of reach. Her hair ignites and her eyes turn red as she activates her semblance. She throws a punch at my chest, but I dodge it easily and hand her the letter. She snatches it and tears it open, reading it eagerly.

I take my plate to the sink and wash it. I talked to Ozpin weeks ago. I was never worried about her getting in or not. So I don't jump when she starts yelling and celebrating her acceptance and I ignore Qrow as he gives her a bottle of booze. She's almost eighteen, a little drink won't hurt her. I walk back to the table and glance at the letter she tossed aside. I freeze when I see a note at the bottom of the general acceptance letter. Jada and Jaden are also invited to join Beacon under special circumstances.
