28: Wanted

[8:37 AM]

Radio's song was, well, quite encouraging. It tested out singing it for a while but ran out of MP quickly. A bit of a shame because it was a nice change from ambient grassland sounds. Biggie decided to continue tagging along for the whole two days because "a deal is a deal" despite me telling it that it could go home.

It was right about the time when I reached the town from yesterday too. I figured I could find a suiting quest for some cash and ask about the value of mana crystals at the adventuring guild there. Two birds with one stone!

The same two guards that helped me earlier were there. They even waved to me friendlily. I didn't know how to wave back so I just told Radio to say "Hi".

I tied Radio onto Sheepy again and had them walk into the guild again. Maybe a bit unorthodox, but what works, works. I didn't feel like talking so I just told Radio to say whatever it wanted to say.

"Oh! You're the girl with the broken legs again!" the girl at the counter said.

She was wearing some sort of white uniform and had long brown hair.

"Yeah... haha." Radio laughed nervously.

Maybe we should have come up with a better reason why the person couldn't come out...

"Ah, sorry if that's insensitive. Nothing wrong with being handicapped!"

"I don't mind. Um, if you don't mind, can you read me the quests available like yesterday?" Radio said. "I can't see them from the vehicle."

This reason I was actually proud of. Sheepy couldn't read text, so I ad-libbed and told Radio to tell her the 'talking device' didn't have a camera!

[Congrats on coming up with common sense.]

Haha. Very funny.

[I am glad to entertain.]

Tablet is annoying.

"Sure! I don't mind. Not much to do here anyway." the receptionist smiled. "Let's see... you picked an escort quest last time, right? Pretty easy with your vehicle!"

"Uh, yeah?"

"Well, unfortunately, there aren't any quests like that available. I mean, right now, most of the easier quests have been cleared out. I don't think you're planning on doing those that pit you against horrible monsters, no?"

"Oh..."

You might be reading a stolen copy. Visit Royal Road for the authentic version.

"Don't worry though. In a short time, the mailman will come with a new list of quests!" the girl smiled. "He normally comes at around 9, so you don't have long to wait."

"Oh, thanks!"

Sheepy walked out with Radio.

"She's a very nice person. I like her attitude!" Radio commented cheerfully.

To be honest, do you think it could be out of sympathy? I mean, she thinks you're a crippled girl stuck in a truck. Or maybe it's just how receptionists are supposed to act.

"She's still nice..."

I waited for a bit, giving Sheepy more aloe vera to chew on. People gave me plenty of strange looks but I didn't really care.

Before long, a man with a huge box strapped to his back arrived. It was covered in dents for some reason. He dislodged the box with little care, making it crash onto the floor with a thud. He took out some slightly crumpled posters from the box, merrily whistling and walked into the guild, handing the papers to the receptionist.

For some reason, she glared at him. She proceeded to pin them onto the quest board one by one.

But just as she was about to pin on of the papers, she seemed a bit shocked. She quickly ran out to me.

"Hey, is this... what I think it is? Your vehicle?" she whispered, trying to make sure no one heard.

I looked at the poster she held up to me with curiosity. Wait... It was me! What the heck?

"Yeah?" said Radio.

"It's a wanted poster! I don't know what happened, but they're after you! Or your vehicle!" she whispered in panic. "You need to make a run for it!"

What the hell? What did I do?

"Ehhhhhh! Well, uh, thanks for telling us- I mean me."

"The best I can do is to pin the poster last! Quickly go!"

The girl ran back in hurriedly, tripping over the steps and falling over. All the posters spilt over the floors.

The people in the guild were suddenly in an uproar.

"Er, too many people to translate. They're after you for a lot of money or something." Sheepy said nonchalantly.

What? Why are you so calm? This is not good!

I drove away hurriedly as hordes of rabid people ran out.

"Not my problem. I can just jump out!" Sheepy laughed.

As it headed towards the cargo hatch, it kicked it.

"Hey! Open up!"

No.

"Bastard! Let me out!"

You're in this with me! And if you get out, maybe they'd use you as a hostage!

Sheepy let out a bleat of frustration. Biggie who I let sit on the driver's seat chuckled.

The distance between me and the pursuers widened. I felt relieved. What man can match the speed of a truck? I was scared for nothing.

I suspected some of them might have thrown spells if this was not a town.

Suddenly, a muscular man in full armour jumped before me, laughing heartily. He held a huge tower shield.

Shit, do I stop or do I keep driving?

[Engine Burst innitiated]

[+50% STR & SPD]

[-1 HP / 3s]

Wait, what? Tablet! I didn't consent to that!

[Hah.]

I crashed into the man at full force.

[-2 HP]

Due to the angle of his shield, he was sent flying into the air. He let out a shrill scream at he crashed to the ground behind me. He dented my bumper which hurt though... Well, he got what he asked for! Who the heck jumps before a truck like that?

As I got closer to the exit, I grew worried. Were the guards going to stop me? I decided to activate Engine Burst again to be quicker.

But out of the blue, a ball of slime shot towards one of my wheels with insane precision, pinning it to the ground. That wasn't good! I tried my best to use telekinesis to get it unstuck but to no avail.

It was then when both guards approached. Seeing their devilish grins, I felt like doom was impending.

Then one of them cast a spell, removing the slime. I felt like I saw a sparkle in one of his eyes for some reason.

"Go! we will hold them back..." The guard tipped his helmet in a strange way. "M'lady."
