Chapter 8: An Education.

A year and a half had passed after starting to learn the Water Style. Lisa Rassi is a thorough teacher, harsh but thorough. A few things have happened in the 12 months, after finding out I was unable to use my left hand for sword fighting Lisa “cursed my father” and started to force me to learn Water Style with both hands.

Added to which she told my father off for not teaching me to fight with my left hand and soon I was partaking in two classes one in the early morning with Lisa and one in the night with my father to practice using my left hand for Rock Style.

It became rather hectic everyday doing Lisa’s sunrise training with Emi and then going to my part time job with the bookstore and then after my father came back from work learning Rock Style with my left hand.

So you see I’ve had insanely tough few months of training. But I feel its worth it, learning and fighting are two key skills needed for when I grow older.

My ninth birthday had arrived I woke and went downstairs and I saw my parents even Lisa and her sister Emi were also there. As tradition on my ninth birthday they told me that everyone was given a magic tag to test if they could use magic. They had tried to keep any mention of magic away as to lessen the disappointment if I was unable to use it.

As I hoped against all hope that I would be able to use magic, however I was unable to, the magic tag did not react and as my parents explained it was usually only people with at least one magical parent who were able to use magic and both my parents had been unable to so they had not held out much hope. Inside my thoughts went into overdrive processing the information, perhaps magic was a genetic thing? Perhaps seeing my face turn thinking through this piece of information, Emi went up and hugged me, her face after the hug was rather tinged. I forced myself to put the matter aside and to not ruin the party and replied,

“Thanks Emi that really helped.” Making sure I smiled to stop everyone worrying

“I just didn’t want feeling sad on your birthday. I can’t use magic too, and my parents told me most people can’t use magic either!” she smiled.

My birthday continued, I was still a taken aback from being unable to use magic but I ignored it by telling myself that I’d just focus on being excellent in other aspects.

After the magic test we ate some cake and had my parents slipped me a bit of the homebrew ale they had and I enjoyed the sweet notes of the ale. It started making a bit sleepy so my parents carried me off to bed and I fell asleep.

The next morning my Emi perhaps believing I will still disappointed decided that we should go out and see our village Trinia a bit more.

“Where do you want to go?” she asked.

“I don’t really know honestly much about our village I’ve only ever been to the bookstore and my house I’ve never really look around.”

“Alright then! I’ll bring you along my own special tour of the best places in Trinia.”

We walked around and went to the clothes store and tried many different types of clothes. Emi even bought me some clothes, telling me I looked “dashing” in these clothes. I of course denied it but she insisted on buying.

Afterwards we went to the little café shop in our town and had a small bite to eat. The local cuisine in Trinia was rather similar to that found in Italy so I enjoyed it very much. I even had half thought that this could be considered a date but discarded that though completely. After all in this world I am only considered 9 and she really is 10.

As we finished eating our lunch Emi decided that we should end our little tour by the lake near Trinia. It was a fair walk away but we entertained ourselves talking about sword fighting of all things. But I decided to try and steer the conversation to learning more things about Emi as we really didn’t talk very much apart from talking about sword fighting.

“Emi how did you get into sword fighting?”

“Ah my mother of all people introduced it to me.”

Good now steer away the conversation,“ What type of person is your mother?”

“Very warm but also sometimes very strict. She says she’s like a mother lioness!”

Good good learning more about her now, “So how is it like at home with your mother, father and your sister?”

“Very lively usually it’s a lot of fun. There’s always someone talking in our family!”

“That’s cool, do you know what you want to be when you grow up?”

“An adventurer just like mother, she said it was so much and she loved it.”

Great we’ve got an shared interest, “Oh me too! That’s part of the reason why I wanted to pick up sword fighting.”

“Haha maybe we can form a party when we are older and explore?!” Her face slightly blushed.

Don’t…lose…your…cool, “Yeah…uh sure that’d be cool.”

We soon arrived at the lake and I sat on the shoreline as Emi ran into the lake.

Emi looking slightly puzzled went out of the water and asked, “Why aren’t coming in to swim.”

“I haven’t actually learned to swim.” I answered honestly. Even in my last life I had lived in a landlocked country and had never had the urge to swim. Perhaps I was afraid or perhaps I wanted to stay away from other people, regardless I never had actually learned to swim.

“Why don’t I teach you then?” She pulled my hand and before I could answer I was right slap bang in to the lake. I just about could stand on my tip toes and was in a sort of precarious position.

“Okay then,” she continued as she stood in the lake; she had no troubles standing in the lake as she was a head taller than me, “Just follow what I do.” She seemed to swim a sort of forward crawl.

I tried to attempt the same and she swam right next to me to make sure that I wouldn’t drown. After a few goes at it and a lot of lake-water drunk I was soon able to swim at least half decently. It had gotten darker so I walked her home and then walked back to my own house.

As I lay in bed I noticed I was no longer sad about not being able to use magic because I knew someone my age would always be there to support me. It filled me up with a warm feeling inside. Perhaps not knowing magic wouldn’t be too bad?
