Chapter 12: Riddle Me This

Emi immediately cried out, “That doesn’t make any sense. What is both light and dark?”

“Emi calm down this is a riddle, we just need to think through it.”

As I stared at the writing on the wall I too panicked but knew that because we were by ourselves we couldn’t rely on anybody else. I took a deep breath and got to thinking,

What is light in the dark and dark in the light?

Some type of flame?

A candle?

Maybe?

No. It doesn’t sleep for one night and you can have a candle in the light…

What else is bright?

What shines in the dark?

But isn’t there in the light?

Dark probably means night so it must be something shines in night?

The stars?

They are invisible in the day time.

But they don’t sleep for one night, they are always there in the night.

What else is in the night sky and is gone for a night…?

I’ve finally figured out the riddle.

I immediately shouted the answer,

”The moon! The moon!”

Emi immediately retorted, “Don’t go mad on me Clover!”

“No! the answer is the moon!”

“Oh….”

The wall as if responding to my voice, suddenly moved upward into the ceiling allowing us entry into a narrower room than the one we entered from previously.

This room was far grander with torches with some type of magic that seemed to sustain them. The torches glowed a ruby red color that flickered with tongues of orange and yellow. It seemed to give the whole room a sort of dungeon feel that was different from the wild cragginess of the previous room.

As we walked further into the room we spotted in the middle a single desk with a chair and piece of parchment that read with the words, “My windows are as dark as sin and the rest of me is as bright as day and I sleep for eternity. What am I?”

“Come on Clover I’m useless at riddles. I prefer straightforward approaches.”

This one I could feel was harder than the last one. What was dark as sin and the rest bright as day?  And sleeps forever?

It must be something inanimate…

As sleeping forever is usually a way to tell a child that someone is dead…so it must be something that isn’t moving or at least an object…

Now what does the first line mean ““My windows are as dark as sin”?

Blacked up windows?

No that would be way too obvious…

What are windows?

What are their characteristics, made of glass…so they are clear…

They are see through…

Does it mean peering through a window and they are as dark as sin?

So peering through to see something dark as sin…

But only beings would commit sin…

So what object was a being before but now is inanimate…?

It must mean they are no longer alive now!

So it must be something that is no longer alive because they “sleep for eternity.”

So what has windows that are dark as sin…and the rest white…

Windows must mean something else…

The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.

Wait a moment windows! Windows, there’s a saying that says Eyes are the windows to the soul…

That would fit with the soul and sinning…

Now what is the meaning of rest of the message as rest of me is as bright as day?  When I think of bright as day I think of day obviously now the what is the day? Compared to sin its bright like the comparison.

Maybe its talking about the difference in color therefore the opposite of dark is light and light is usually symbolized as white.

So what has eyes that are black and the rest of them is white? And sleeps for eternity?

That’s it! It’s a skeleton! A skeleton!

I shouted the answer because of my excitement at figuring it out,

“It’s a skeleton!”

“You figured it out Clover, well done!” She immediately came up and hugged me. I once again felt that warm feeling course through my body. It felt good to be happy with someone.

A door appeared at the end of the room with the words, “You may proceed.”

As we entered into the last room dimly lit room. It was lit by the next riddle which was on the floor, “I am greater than God Almighty and more evil than the devil himself. The poor have me, the rich need it and if you eat me you will die. What am I?” The words glowed and lit up the room throwing a warm but eerie feeling on the walls of the box like room. As I looked around I saw how small the room was compared to the last ones.

As I struggled with this last riddle for 10 minutes in silence with its complexities and the length compared to the last ones, it dawned on me where this cave lead to? Would it leave to the outside or perhaps as a cruel joke to those who entered it would go back to the beginning? This unknown caused panic within and I had to take a couple breaths to calm myself down.

“Come on Clover I know we’re relying on you but I know you can do this. Just keeping it through…There’s nothing that can stop you I know that.” Emi I guess was trying to encourage me.

Hah nothing that can stop me…that’s a joke. I know a great many things that can stop me… a truck, diseases, getting stabbed in the heart…, even the god that I met I was powerless against him. Nothing can stop me… wait…a…sec…Nothing is better than god…nothing is more evil than the devil himself…The poor have nothing…The rich need nothing and if you eat nothing you will die…!

“That’s the answer Emi well done!” I ran and hugged and kissed her without thinking. Her face tinged red from the action and the surprise

“Nothing is the answer! Nothing!”

The original words on the ground faded into the ground and new words lit up instead the message now changed to, “Congratulations, onto the last and final challenge.”

A door appeared with a simple sign that said, “Man’s Greatest Weakness.” I hesitated as I thought of my past.

Emi still read and looking at the words, she smiled and said, “Come on you’ve got this the last and final challenge. I believe in you.” She grabbed my hand and pulled me into the next room.
