Vol.2 Chap.6 Presenting the discovery

Doctor Liu looked around, found Doctor Wu, and nodded to him. Doctor Wu stood up and surveyed the lecture hall. It was packed. There were still more people trying to get in and they were trying to sit on the stairs. He picked up the microphone and tapped on it and the hall felt silent instantly.

“Thank you for coming. We have quite a crowd here tonight. Those of you coming in, there are a few chairs left up here on the front row. Please hurry.” There was a slight commotion as people shifted their chairs to accommodate the newcomers.

“We are thrilled to have so many important guests here tonight.” He started again. “I see we have Doctor Chu, President of our Medical College,” Doctor Wu motioned to him as he stood up and nodded. “Doctor Tang, the Director at the State Department of Health.” He also stood up and nodded. “Doctor Liu, the Chief of the Acupuncture Section, and most of the faculty in the Acupuncture Section here as well.” Doctor Wu waved to them.

“Tonight, we have an exciting presentation from one of our local doctors who has been working on some pioneering work in acupuncture. I know her work ever since she arrived here in Xilon five years ago. Perhaps Doctor Liu would like to introduce our guest speaker?”

Doctor Liu stood up and faced the audience. He took the microphone from Doctor Wu.

“Thank you, Doctor Wu.” He continued, “President Chu, Doctor Tang, ladies and gentlemen, officials, colleagues.” Doctor Liu was trembling a little. He was never an excellent orator in front of people.

“It is my greatest honor and pleasure tonight to introduce our guest speaker. She and I both graduated from the Medical College in Shanghai, although she graduated a year before me. She was the star student and was voted the model student in her last year of study there. For three years, she had been a great help to me personally. The fact that I am a doctor today was primarily because of her tireless tutoring. Since coming to Xilon, I have kept in touch with her and was amazed at the research work that she was doing at the clinic. I know that there had been a significant breakthrough in her work there. That is the reason we have specifically asked her to come and speak to us tonight. So, without delay, let me present to you Doctor May-Ling Chen.”

Doctor Liu turned to her and clapped. The rest of the crowd spontaneously stood up and applauded as well.

May-Ling stood up and approached the podium. Doctor Liu shook her hands earnestly and gave her the microphone. She turned and smiled to the crowd as she surveyed the audience in the lecture hall. She had hordes of butterflies in her stomach, though she appeared calm and collected on the outside. No one could have guessed how many butterflies there were inside of her.

“Thank you, Doctor Liu. Thank you, President Chu. Thank you, Doctor Tang. Thank you, Doctor Wu.” She nodded to each one as she spoke. “Thank you, colleagues and friends.” She looked at the audience again.

“As I was coming, I noticed that the weather tonight was so beautiful. I thought that it would be so nice to stroll along the street and enjoy this beautiful twilight, so I thank you for sacrificing such a lovely evening to come and listen to a boring lecture.” The crowd laughed.

“So let me be short and succinct…”

She began to narrate her work at the clinic five years ago. She and her husband Haw-Ting had used acupuncture to treat patients with violence tendencies. In a poor and rough section of town, there were no shortage of violent patients. They seemed to get hurt more often than others.

However, she was not satisfied with only treating them. The violent ones got hurt all the time. They would come in and get bandaged up. After a few weeks, they came back because they got into another fight and got hurt again. Of course, she would continue to treat them again and again without questions.

But she wanted to do more than just treating their injuries. She wanted to root out their violent tendencies so that they would not get hurt again.

After researching the matter for about half a year, she concluded that violence came from a gross imbalance of the evil and the good nature in a person, the yin and yang force. If the yang force was strong, a person would be benevolent, always thinking good for others. However, if the yin force was strong, the person would be quick to react in an evil and selfish manner. If either the yin or the yang force was too strong, disastrous results resulted. Hence, it is crucial to find the proper balance between the two forces.

Since the accidental discovery of the yin and yang meridians on a patient called Jar-Li, she had experimented acupuncture on a few other patients who were also mildly violent. Eventually, she discovered that there existed a meridian near the spinal cord that ran deeper than the usual surface meridians of the human body. Whenever she inserted the needles in the pressure points along this meridian, the patient would become docile. The violence tendencies disappeared, though only for a short period.

“I have mentioned this to Doctor Liu, and he has confirmed the same results with several of his patients.” She told the audience.

She put up a chart with Doctor Liu’s help.

“The exact location of the meridian is right here.” She pointed to a dark blue line on the drawing.

“I called this the peace meridian or the yang meridian because its activation evoked peace to the patient. It is about two centimeters deep, so it is much deeper than the surface pressure points. I have experimented with several pressure points along this meridian. They are here, here, and here.” She pointed to three green dots along the peace meridian.

“Of course, if there is a meridian for peace, there should be another meridian for violence. The location of this meridian is exactly where I expect it to be. While the meridian of peace is on the right side of the body, the meridian of violence is on the left side of the body. It is marked red here in the drawing.” She pointed to the drawing as well.

“I call this the meridian of violence or the yin meridian. And there are also three pressure points I have found for its activation. They are also in the same location but opposite to those for the meridian of peace.”

“As you can see, I double check with Doctor Liu here for every case that I have encountered.” She extended an open palm to Doctor Liu who nodded his head to the audience.

“So, in conclusion, I just want to share my results with you and I welcome any referrals from you regarding any violent patients. There is still much to learn and much more to discover. I look forward to learning from all of you in days to come. I also welcome any of you to come to my clinic and observe the procedures. Perhaps you may also want to volunteer to work there for a few hours a week as well. We can always use the help.”

A thunderous laugh broke out.

“Again, thank you so much for your attention and I wish you all a pleasant evening.”

She smiled and bowed at her colleagues, the honored guests, the audience, and then sat down.

The audience took to their feet with applause. After a long period of thunderous applause. Doctor Wu stood up with the microphone and motioned the crowd to settle down.

“Ladies and gentlemen, what we have heard tonight could be one of the most important breakthroughs for this century in the practice of medicine. While we as doctors have done a good job in dealing with physical illness, we are often at a loss to mental illness; I must say what Doctor Chen had presented to us tonight is extremely significant and ground-breaking. There may yet be hope for a disease-free world that is also free of mental illness and violence.”

Again, loud applause broke out.

“It is getting late. I am sure many of you would like to chat with Doctor Chen on her new procedure. I would recommend you all to go to her clinic and volunteer there. I know she can use the help. Personally, I’ve been there, so I know her situation well. So, we will dismiss the meeting….”

Before Doctor Wu finished his sentence, there was already a crowd gathered around May-Ling peppering her with all kinds of questions. Doctor Wu threw up his hand, put the microphone down, and joined them.

“So, you think it depends totally on the balance of the yin and yang forces?” One junior resident asked.

“I believe so.” She answered politely.

“What is the source of this yin and yang forces?”

“I wish I knew.”

“Do the meridians originate from the brain?” Another resident asked.

“I believe the two lines can be traced all the way back at least to the cerebrum.”

“So does that mean that the life force is tied to our consciousness?”

“I am afraid I don’t have enough knowledge to confirm or dispute this point.”

“If we can tap into the yin and yang forces in a person, does that mean that we can change the person’s behavior?” One of her colleagues asked.

“Perhaps, we hope to make use of this discovery to rid the world of evil.”

“But would it be possible that the same technology could make a gang of evil gangsters?”

“It may be, but I have no desire to explore that.”

“But it could be possible, can it not?”

“I suppose, but so far, the effects are not long lasting. We can only balance the Yin and Yang force for a short time.”

“Is it possible to overcorrect?” A young doctor asked.

“I think so, I have always been careful not to overdo the correction. I believe that over-correction can be just as dangerous as no correction at all.”

The discussion continued for another hour before Doctor Wu finally broke up the crowd so that she could leave.

He walked her to the front of the Medical School and shook her hands. She thanked him again and again before departing for home.
