It was time to go back to Beijing. But the day before they had to leave, Haw-Ting bought her a ring, and they had a simple engagement ceremony before the magistrate. Of course, Haw-Ting’s parents invited all his friends for a formal dinner in their restaurants. For the whole evening, He was grinning and was totally beside himself. While May-Ling was smiling outwardly, she was still hurting inside. Since they both only had one more semester left, they planned to have a formal wedding after graduation. He thought this would leave his parents with plenty to do to occupy them while he and she finished up the last semester.
The last semester of medical school went by quickly as both Haw-Ting and May-Ling concentrated on their schoolwork. After graduation, they headed back to Shanghai and had a formal wedding. However, the most important thing was to decide where they would set up practice. It was clear from the start that they would set up a clinic and help the poor and the helpless. Both were raised in a hard childhood. They understood the pain and the suffering of the poor and the helpless. They had no problem in deciding what they would do together. The only question was where. Of course, Haw-Ting’s parents wanted them to stay in Shanghai and set up practice there. However, she wanted to go back to Xilon, her childhood home, and continue the work that her parents started there.

The plan pleased his parents. So, as soon as the wedding festivities had ended, they packed their belongings and headed for Xilon. Despite his refusal, his parents gave some money to her for them to start their career together.
With that small fortune, they found a small empty building in Xilon and set up a clinic. The building was an abandoned warehouse in a poor section of town near where her parents used to work. They also rented a nearby apartment. For several weeks, they renovated the place, doing as much of the work themselves as possible. The following week, the Tsai-Chen clinic officially opened its door.
The PA system on the plane crackled again about landing. May-Ling wiped a tear from her eyes and straighten her seat. She simply could not wait to see her beloved husband Haw-Ting, her companion since she was twelve, her strength during all the difficult times.
