Vol.2 Chap.42 A sense of purpose has returned
The outside was already getting light. She had studied all night. Yawning, she should be tired, but the more she researched the topic, the more she was energized. She stood up, stretched, and walked around the apartment for a few minutes. Then she poured herself another fresh cup of tea and returned to study the diary again.
The exact location of the village was never mentioned directly. All the references mentioned the village was on top of a remote mountain. Many references about the village being above the clouds. There was also one mention that there was a stream flowing through the village.
Clearly, she needed more study. But that was sufficient for the night. It was enough that her sense of purpose and direction had returned.
After washing up a little, she left early to the hospital hoping to talk to Doctor Wu before he had to start his hospital rotation. The morning traffic was heavy, and it took quite a while for the taxi to take her to the hospital. She arrived just about the same time as he did.
“Well, I see you are up early this morning and you have dark rings around your baggy eyes. Would you like me to prescribe some sleeping pills for you?”
“No, thank you, Doctor Wu. I like to talk to you about the clinic and my future if you have time.”
“Of course. Let me get some tea first.”
Doctor Wu instructed the assistant to get some tea.
“Tell me what you would like to do?”

“If the hospital would like to take over the operation of the clinic, I am very grateful as long as my patients are adequately taken care of.”
“Regarding this point, as I have told you yesterday, the hospital board has been considering expanding in that area for quite some time already. I am sure that the board would have no trouble assuming and even expanding the clinic operation there.”
“As you know, we mostly operate out of cash in the clinic. This is partly because no one would extend credit to us, and partly because we wanted to owe no one any money. So, there is no liability except for the long-term rental contract of the facilities.”
“I am fully aware of the situation.”
“As a referral fee and handing all operations of the clinic over to the hospital, I would like to have a two-month sabbatical with full pay.”
“I will speak to the board about this. I think this is a reasonable request.”
“My last request is that after two months, perhaps the hospital would be so kind as to grant me a position here. I really do not want to go back to the clinic.”
“I fully understand your sentiment. Personally, I would love to have you as a colleague on the hospital staff.”
“Thank you, Doctor Wu. I know you understand me well and I am forever grateful to you for all your support in such a time of great need as today. You are a genuine friend indeed.”
“May-Ling, as doctors, we have all taken the Hippocratic oath to help our patients. After so many years of helping patients in the traditional manner, I know that there are many merits in your discovery. Imagine what the world would be like if we cure every criminal. How much better the world would be if violence can be cured like the common cold?”
“I hope with your help, we can achieve that within our lifetime.”
“I hope so too.”
May-Ling stood up.
“I still have a lot of details to attend to. So let me leave you with your patients. Again, I thank you so much for everything that you have done the last few days. I would not know where to begin if you were not there.”
“If you ever need anything, just ask. I will speak to the board during the board meeting later this week. I am sure that they will approve what you requested. I will bring word to you as soon as the board decides.”
“Thank you.”
She bowed and turned to leave.
“What would you do during the next two months?”
“I am not sure yet, but I need some time to rest.”
“I understand.”
