***** Vol.2 Chap.28 Bonded as soul mates *****
Since that incident, she would always wait for him before and after school. The two had become inseparable. No matter how others had teased them at school year after year, the two stuck with one another, like two peas in a pod.
High school days flew by rather quickly and uneventfully. Every day, she would get up early in the morning. Grandpa Chen usually had breakfast ready for her. After breakfast, she would go to the restaurant and wait for Haw-Ting. Then the two would go to school together. After class, they would walk back to the restaurant together. She would help in the restaurant by washing dishes and do whatever they asked her to do. He also helped as an assistant cook. During the weekends, they would study together and get caught up on their schoolwork. Haw-Ting’s parents were nice to her, seeing that she was a good worker. Eventually, they treated her as part of the family.
After high school graduation, they both took the medical school examination together and were both accepted to the Medical School in Beijing, one of the most prestigious medical schools in the country. Though medical school was hard, the two spent all the time together helping one another in the courses. Though there was little time for romance, they both knew that they were meant for one another. In fact, he knew they would get married someday when he found out that they were both accepted into medical school. For her, the realization came slowly. She was never quite certain about marriage. Not that she did not like him; rather, she knew if she ever got married, it would only be Haw-Ting and no one else. It was just that she could not see marriage and raising a family as the purpose of her life.

But beyond just a feeling, she had absolutely no clue what was the purpose.
During their last year of medical school, they were traveling by train back to Shanghai during the winter break. During the train ride, they were having a good time talking with one another about what they would do after graduation. They talked about staying in Shanghai and working at the hospital there. She wanted to go back to Xilon. He told her that his parents wanted him to stay in Shanghai. Suddenly, Haw-Ting turned to her and grabbed her hand. She was slightly startled by his actions.
“May-Ling, will you marry me?”
Haw-Ting proposed to her right there and then in front of all the rest of the train passengers. She was not sure what to do. To her, she would rather wait till they were settled in their careers before talking about marriage. So, the proposal came as a total surprise to her.
“May-Ling, I cannot stand the thought of not being with you.” He pleaded. “Whatever is our career path, I want to make sure that we are both together.”
That made sense. May-Ling thought.
To her, it was not a matter of whom to marry. She knew she would marry him someday. It was just the timing. She thought it was still too early to consider marriage. She looked at him and his pleading eyes. Her heart melted.
“Of course I will.” The words just kind of blurted out of her mouth.
The rest of the train ride flew by as he shifted into high gear, trying to plan out all the events and festivities for the following year.
