Vol.2 Chap.36 Coming to an empty home
On the way home, May-Ling thought of stopping by the clinic, so she told the taxi driver to go to the clinic first. When the taxi arrived at the clinic, she sat in the taxi looking at the clinic. Somehow, the clinic looked strangely different and hollow. She wanted to step out, but her legs would not move. She tried again, but her legs would not obey.
“Ma’am? Do you need any help? You want me to call for someone?”
“No, thank you. I am fine. Please, just give me a minute.”
The driver said nothing, though he left the motor going and the meter running.
“Please take me to this address.” She gave the driver her home address. The driver sped away.

Within minutes, they arrived. She paid the driver. After picking up all her bags, she slowly walked towards her apartment. There was no Haw-Ting to greet her at the door and hug her inside, as he always did. There was no Haw-Ting to bug her about dinner. There was no Haw-Ting to stare at the moon together from the window. Everything seemed so purposeless and meaningless.
She found herself in a dream world where she was all alone. Every direction she turned, the absence of someone beloved was deeply felt as if a knife had been driven into her heart. The reality of Haw-Ting being gone began to set in. She dropped her bags in the middle of the room. She stumbled out to the veranda and stared at the sky.
It would have been a beautiful day. As she looked down towards the street, there was the usual hustling and bustling of the day. But within her, there was a big void, a big emptiness. No more Haw-Ting to stroll the street with.
She was physically tired from the trip. After all the events from this morning, she was also emotionally drained. She lacked any motivation to do anything else. Again, the fire of life within her had been extinguished abruptly by Haw-Ting’s passing. She found that her life was again being tossed by fate, just when she was getting comfortable with what she was doing and where she was heading. All she could do was muster up enough energy to walk toward the bed and curled up under the covers.
