Vol.2 Chap.5 Arriving at the Medical School
The Dean of the Medical School, Doctor Wu, was anxiously pacing back and forth at the front door of the school. Before the bus came to a full stop, May-Ling jumped off the bus and hurried to him.
“I am so sorry,” she said to him, “We had a minor incident in the clinic and I got delayed.”
“No problem at all. We still have fifteen minutes to walk to the lecture hall. We will make it in time. Let us go this way.” Doctor Wu led the way to the lecture hall.
“Again, I am so sorry that you have to wait.” She was apologizing for her tardiness.
“I am so glad to see you. The important thing is that you are here.”
“Yes, this will not happen again.”
“No harm done. I was afraid that you might have been detained elsewhere. You don’t have a phone in the clinic?”
“No, we had considered getting a phone, but there are so many other expenses we have to take care of first.”
“I understand. Your clinic is the only one I know of that is free.”
If you come across this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.
“Yes.”
“I don’t know how you can do it.”
“I don’t know either. Somehow, we have survived till now. I do get to see a lot of patients, though.”
“That’s for sure. Oh, I almost forgot, here is a small honorarium for your lecture tonight.”
“Oh, thank you. Thank you. You don’t have to do this.”
“It is a small token of our appreciation.”
“It means a lot to me and to my clinic.”
“No, no, no. This is for you and Haw-Ting only, not your clinic.”
“I understand. Again, thank you so much for your generosity. I will never forget your kindness.”
“Well, the pleasure is all mine. We love to hear what exciting things you are doing in the clinic.”
“Oh, you are too kind. Doctor Wu.”
Turning the corner, they saw a steady stream of people going into the lecture hall. She recognized the building well. She had given lectures there before.
“Do you need any special setups for the lectures?” Doctor Wu asked as they were going up the stairs of the main building where the lecture hall was.
“Not really. I brought a couple of charts with me. I will hang them up at the appropriate time during the lecture.”
“OK. If you need anything, just ask.”
“I know. Thank you.”
They joined the crowd and filed into the lecture hall. Immediately, everyone stood up and welcomed them with applause. That was customary. They walked down the aisle until they got to the first row and sat down. The Chief of the Acupuncture Section, Doctor Liu, came and shook her hand and directed the attendant to pour her some hot tea.
Bending over and whispering to her, “I am so looking forward to your lecture tonight.”
She turned to him and smiled. “I hope I don’t disappoint you.”
“OK. I will give you a few minutes to organize your talk.”
“Thank you. Yes, we can talk later.” She scanned over her notes quickly to make sure that everything was there and counted her charts and drawings to be sure that she had brought all the needed charts with her. Everything seemed in order.
“I think I am ready.” She turned and informed him.
