***** Vol.2 Chap.19 Mrs. Lu again *****
There was a knock at the door of the clinic. Without turning around, Grandpa Chen knew who that was.
“Come in, Mrs. Lu.”
Mrs. Lu came in.
“Well, have you got all the money? I don’t have all day, you know.” She was blunt and vulgar. May-Ling wondered how a person could be so passionate yesterday during the speech and so cold just one day after.
“I got a little more money this morning. Let me see.” Grandpa Chen counted all the money in front of Mrs. Lu. “It looks like all I have is 210 rmb. I need to keep fifty dollars for the train fare. I will give you everything else.”
“No, Mr. Chen. I need all the cash today.”
“Can we work something out?”

“Once you get on the train, I will never see you again.”
“I am not that kind of person. If I promise you, I will send you ten rmb a month, I will.”
“Ten rmb? That will take over a year to repay me, even without interest. What am I supposed to eat in the meantime?”
Grandpa Chen knew she was being fictitious, but she definitely had the advantage at this point. He looked around the clinic and saw that while most of the supplies were gone, there were still some Chinese herbs in the medicine cabinet.
“Mrs. Lu, I will give you all the cash I have now. That amounts to 160 rmb. I have checked the medicine cabinets and there must be at least 500 rmb worth of herbal medicine here. I will give that all to you as well.”
“What am I going to do with a bunch of herbs? No one will want this stuff, anyway.”
“They are expensive and would fetch a good price if I take them to the pharmacy supplier myself. But since you’ve been so good to Lon-Lai and to me, I would rather that you keep the profit.”
Mrs. Lu paced around the clinic a little more and decided that it was useless to argue anymore.
“I don’t know why I am agreeing to this and why I am doing this, but OK, I will take the medicinal herbs. Now I have to pack them up and sell them. What a bother, what a bother.”
“Thank you. Here is the cash that I promised you.” Grandpa Chen gave her the money.
Mrs. Lu grabbed the money without saying a word. Then she turned around and walked out of the clinic, muttering to herself. “What a bother, what a bother.”
