Chapter 19: Woke up with scales

Chapter 19: Woke up with scales

I finally woke up. My head feels like I’ve been hit by a baseball bat. My back feels very achy. I grunt loudly and I shut my eyes tight. I slowly stand on my feet and bend backward. I feel a terrible knot cracking on my back, which makes me not ache anymore.

“That felt good,” I grunt.

I shake my head and open my eyes to see Megan, Timmy, and Spotty all staring at me. I stretch out my neck and rub my eyes. I open my eyes and it looks a bit blurry, but then it clears. I can see Megan, Spotty, and Timmy. They all look up and stare at me.

“Either you guys have gotten shorter or I am standing on a rock,” I say.

Spotty clears her throat. “Neither. You are-” Timmy hits Spotty to interrupt her.

“Can you excuse us for a moment?” asks Timmy.

I scrunch my shoulders. “Thank you,” says Timmy.

Timmy grabs Spotty by her right hand and runs behind a rock. Megan continues staring up at me.

“Megan is something wrong?” I ask.

Megan slowly nods. Meanwhile Timmy and Spotty are talking behind the rock. “We have to tell him nicely and calmly,” says Timmy.

“How can we tell him that he is a…” Spotty is about to finish the sentence when I peek over the rock.

“Tell me what?” I ask.

Spotty and Timmy turn their heads up to me. “Well um…you…you…are…a-are a…a…” stutters Spotty.

“Well?” I ask impatiently.

Megan rolls her eyes and taps on my left leg. I turn my head to Megan. “What?” I ask.

“Oh, for crying out loud! You look like a Blue Dragon!” bursts Megan.

I can’t believe what Megan just said. “That’s ridiculous,” I say.

I roll my eyes and walk to a river to drink some water. Spotty and Timmy look at each other and gasp. They run in front of me. “How about we get some water for you?” asks Timmy.

Timmy smiles nervously. I look down at Timmy and Spotty and they both smile nervously at me.

“I can get it myself, thank you,” I answer.

I jump over Timmy and Spotty. I notice that as I jump, I start to float in the air, over Timmy and Spotty. It feels like I’m flying or gliding.

“How did I do that?” I ask myself.

Megan sees a large sharp rock and I am flying toward it. I am in shock that I seem to be flying so I don’t even notice the sharp rock ahead.

“Watch out!” shouts Megan.

I look up ahead and I see the sharp rock. I feel something on my back. I try to slow myself down as I glide toward the rock. My gliding starts to slow down. I stop right in front of the sharp rock and it barely touches my belly. I shiver in fear.

“Whew, that was close,” I say.

I slowly glide back to the ground by the river. I pant for a few seconds, then stop. I look at my reflection in the river and my eyes widen in shock. I cover them with my hands. I quickly remove my hands from my eyes. My hands are light blue and I have claws that are sharp like knives. I look behind my back and I see a very long tail, at least six feet, I see light blue scales everywhere except for my belly, my neck, and under my blue tail which is yellow. My belly is smooth like a snake’s underbelly. I have dark brown horns on my head. I still have my brown hair, only it has grown longer and goes all the way down my neck. I still have my turquoise backpack on my back, but my clothes are gone. My neck is almost as long as a swan’s. My light blue wings are wider than Megan’s body. There are horns on the tip of my wings. There are two more horns on my head. They are as big as the horns of a ram but pointing up with black tips. I notice that I am standing on all four legs.

I can’t stop looking at my blue Dragon body.

“H-how did this happen?” I ask.

“I don’t know,” answers Megan.

I turn to Timmy and Spotty and they look kind of guilty. “We wanted to tell you that you are a Dragon but, we didn’t know how you would take it. I mean, what if you freaked out or panicked?” asks Spotty.

Megan rolls her eyes and shakes her head a little. “It is really simple to just let it out like you’re a Dragon. It’s so simple to me,” says Megan to Timmy and Spotty.

Timmy pouts like a cute little dog. “To you it is, but not to us,” mutters Timmy.

“Whatever.” Megan looks up at me. “So, how are you taking it Daniel with this Dragon form? I mean, are you freaking out like Spotty and Timmy thought you would?” asks Megan.

I look back at my light blue scaly tail and then at my yellow chest. “Well I…I…think that…” I stutter.

Then I smile and stand proudly. Megan smiles and nods back at me. Timmy and Spotty both seem confused about why Megan and I feel so very proud of my Dragon form.

“What are they smiling about?” Timmy asks Spotty.

“Maybe it’s a human thing,” answers Spotty.

I laugh and reach my arms in the air. “I like it!” I shout with joy.

I close my eyes and fly up into the sky. I open my eyes and see the others far below me. I gasp and fly back to the ground. I pant and put my hands on my chest to calm my nerves. Megan sighs and wipes her brow with her white long-sleeve shirt. “He is afraid of heights,” says Megan.

I stop panting and pat my chest. “Let’s not do that again,” I shudder.

Spotty smacks her head. “What kind of dragon is afraid of heights?” asks Spotty.

Timmy hits Spotty’s head. “Daniel!” Timmy points at me.

Megan walks up to me and stands right in front of me. She looks up and I look down at her. I am almost seven and a half feet tall. A cold wind blows by us. I shiver from it.

“Are you cold?” asks Megan.

I close my eyes and rub my arms. I nod as my body shivers. Megan hugs me and I hug her back. “Now how do you feel?” asks Megan.

I take a deep breath and sigh as I feel Megan’s warm body. “That’s much better,” I say.

I continue hugging Megan. Timmy looks at Spotty and begins to smile. Timmy spreads out his arms and walks to Spotty and she growls at Timmy.

“Don’t even think about it bro!” snaps Spotty.

Timmy drops his arms. “I was just kidding. The thought of me hugging you feels odd,” says Timmy.

I hear thunder above me. I slowly let go of Megan and look up at the sky.

“What’s wrong?” asks Megan.

I don’t answer her. I just continue looking up. The sound of thunder echoes above me. I bend my legs and fly up in the sky as fast as I can. Megan is looking up at me. “Wait! I thought you were afraid of heights!” shouts Megan.

Timmy and Spotty both look up at me as fly toward the dark clouds. They seem confused again.

“Earthlings, they always change their minds,” says Spotty.

I look back down at the others. “Just need to check out something!” I shout.

I continue to fly up in the sky. I can see the dark clouds ahead of me. I fly right through them and I notice a bright light at the end of the stormy clouds. I am almost to the light. I hear a screaming noise that sounds very scary and very familiar. The dark gray stormy clouds make it hard for me to see clearly. I ignore the screaming noise and continue to fly up into the sky. I hear the screaming noise again, only this time it sounds very close to me.

“Screaming Meanie,” I whisper.

I stop flying and flap my wings to levitate myself in the sky. I close my eyes and wait for the Screaming Meanie to attack. I hope he doesn’t attack but I’m not worried now that I’m a powerful Dragon. The Screaming Meanie would probably break easily since they are living skeletons.

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

I just hover in the air and listen to the sound of the thunder. It sounds like it’s about a mile away. I hear the screaming noise again, only this time I hear it right behind me. I do not open my eyes. I just wait for him. I can feel and hear the Screaming Meanies breathe right on my neck. “There is only one?” I ask.

I hear the screeching of a sharp sword. It sounds like it’s coming out of a sword pouch.

“Oh man, he’s got a sword,” I whisper.

The cold rain starts to fall very hard. I shiver a little bit. It sounds like the rain is dropping metal.

“He is wearing armor,” I whisper.

I shake in fear and cannot fly away because I feel very terrified. I wait for the right moment to fly away or strike. I can hear the slow panting of the Screaming Meanie right behind my Dragon ears. I pretend to whimper with fear as I shake, mostly because I am freezing in this cold rainy sky.

I feel the sharp sword touching my scaly belly. The blade feels cold and wet.

I slowly grab the Screaming Meanies blade. I notice that it doesn’t feel that sharp, just cold. I grunt as I slowly push the sword away from my belly. The Scramming Meanie starts to grunt too. I growl and the Scramming Meanie growls back at me.

“What exactly are you trying to do?” I ask.

“Oh nothing, just trying to, gee, I don’t know,” mutters the Screaming Meanie

“Trying to kill you!” bloats the Screaming Meanie.

I finally open my eyes and push the blade toward the Screaming Meanie. At first, I stare at him with fear, but then my fear changes into bravery. The Screaming Meanie tries to stab me as he thrusts the sword toward my belly. I continue to push his sword away. I feel the same super strength in me again.

“What are you doing here?” I grunt.

The Screaming Meanie does not answer me. He just continues to thrust his sword into my Dragon belly. I grunt hard and break the Screaming Meanies arms off of him. He does not scream in pain, because he is already dead.

“Ooh, that’s got to hurt,” I say.

I drop the skeleton arms and they fall to the ground. Megan, Timmy, and Spotty notice the skeleton arms coming down at them. Megan and Timmy run in opposite directions to avoid the impact. The skeleton arms fall on Spotty. Timmy starts to laugh and Spotty growls at Timmy. Timmy chuckles nervously.

“Uh, I think that I will just get those skeleton arms off of you, sis,” chuckles Timmy.

“Yah thinks?!” shouts Spotty.

Timmy grabs the skeleton arms and throws them away from Spotty.

The Screaming Meanie grabs his sword with his teeth and continues to push it toward my belly. He screams very loudly. I cannot cover my ears, because my hands are pushing the sword away from me. The scream hurts my eardrums. It feels like little needles in them.

Timmy, Spotty, and Megan hear the scream from the Screaming Meanie. They cover their ears.

“That sounds like a Screaming Meanie!” shouts Megan.

The screaming stops. Timmy and Spotty gasp. “What do we do?” asks Timmy.

Megan lowers her hands down. “We wait, it’s all we can do,” answers Megan.

I slowly remove my right hand from the sword and wrap my tail around it. I touch my ears and see a bit of red blood on my claws. Grizzlyon was not kidding. If they scream in your ear too long they will kill you. I need to think of something fast before the Screaming Meanie screams again.

The Screaming Meanie takes a deep breath. I cover my ears with my hands.

“Wait!” I shout.

The Screaming Meanie holds his breath. I take a deep breath and I fly away from the Screaming Meanie. The Screaming Meanie with armor follows me. I fly back towards the Screaming Meanie. My claws slice through the skeleton’s body. His bones shatter like glass and the pieces fall to the ground. Megan screams as she sees many Screaming Meanie bones falling from the sky. Spotty starts to panic.

“Ew! Ew! Ew! Ew! Ew! Eeeeeeewwww!” Spotty runs under a rock.

I levitate in the sky breathing heavily. I make a crooked smile.

“Wow!” I shout joyfully. “I can’t believe I did that. I mean, the bravery and the incredible super strength of this Dragon form,” I say.

I slowly glide down toward the ground to meet the others. Megan sees me gliding out of the clouds. The hard rain slowly changes into a gentle sprinkling. The cold wind still blows. I notice Megan pointing at me.

“There he is!” shouts Megan.

I slowly glide down and stop in front of her. “What was that?” asks Megan.

“It was a Screaming Meanie,” I answer.

I look down at the skeleton pieces of the Screaming Meanie and his rusted armor.

“But what I don’t understand is why did it have armor on?” I ask.

Spotty walks away from the rock that she was hiding behind. “Maybe it was getting ready for a fight,” answers Spotty.

I gasp and turn away from the others. “If that is true, Feeon will be in big trouble if the Horrors armies come to Azent Kingdom,” I whisper.

I do not want to tell the others about the army that might come. All that I am thinking about is getting home. I clear my throat and turn back to the others.

“Well, never mind that. Let’s find the old man,” I say.

Megan turns to me.

She seems very worried. “But Daniel, what if this Screaming Meanie is getting ready for w-” I interrupt Megan. “For a f-fight?” I ask. “That’s right. And it just so happens that I was fighting it,” I finish.

Megan scoffs and turns to Timmy. “I don’t think he cares about Feeon,” whispers Megan.

I turn my head to hear what Megan is saying. “What is that supposed to mean?” I growl.

Megan turns back to me and she looks very upset. “Daniel, I know that you were fighting the Screaming Meanie, but he had armor on him! Isn’t it obvious that he was on his way to Azent for a war?” asks Megan.

I put my hands in front of Megan. “Megan calm down. We don’t know for sure,” I say gently.

I turn away from her and I notice a large valley of fog. I take the map out of my backpack and look at it. I notice a blanket of mist on the map that says Misty Land.

“We just need to get to that misty place. Then I need to find the old man,” I say.

Megan folds her arms and looks very upset at me. “Tell me, Daniel, what are you thinking about? And tell me the truth,” demands Megan.

I rub my head as I think about her question. I clear my throat but feel afraid to answer.

“Well I…you see…umm,” I stutter.

I gulp. “My m-mom,” I say.

Megan’s face changes into a worried look. Tears fill my eyes and I frown and sniff. I turn away from Megan. I kneel and put my head down. I feel like crying, but I keep it in. I sniff and just stare at the ground. “What if my dad is dying after that car accident?” I ask.

I sniff again and wipe the tears off my face. “What if we’re stuck in this new world forever?” I ask.

Spotty and Timmy start to cry too. Timmy turns to Spotty and hugs her. Timmy tries to comfort Spotty as she feels very sad for me.

I sniff again. “I j-just want to go home,” I complain.

Megan, however, does not cry, she just sighs and walks up to me. She places her right hand on my left shoulder.

“Daniel, I know that you miss your mother and father. But they love you and you love them too. They will wait for you to return home. They have faith and so do I. They love you very much,” says Megan.

Then her face changes into an angry look.

“Until they leave you,” complains Megan.

I hear what she says. After I hear it I feel the urge to ask Megan what she meant. I get up and I turn around to Megan. I tap my front right Dragon foot.

“What do you mean?” I ask.

“Look, all I’m trying to say is that my mom has been gone on a trip for a long time,” answers Megan.

I raise my eyebrows. “I know. You said she left your home after she argued with your dad,” I remind her.

“I lied,” says Megan.

Timmy and Spotty know that we are about to argue so they walk behind a rock. I’m feeling angry that Megan lied.

“Why did you lie?” I ask.

Megan sighs and puts her arms down. “My mom is not gone on a trip, she is…” She stops for a moment. “She died after she left my dad and me,” answers Megan.

Megan seems very angry. I feel very sorry for Megan. “When did she die?” I ask.

Megan turns away and walks from me. “Megan, when?” I follow her.

Megan turns back around to me. “Please don’t ask!” she blurts.

She scared me. “Well if you are not going, to be honest with me…” I stutter.

I stomp in front of Megan. I close my fists and shut my eyes tightly then turn my head away from her.

“Then we’re no longer friends!” I shout.

Timmy and Spotty both gasped behind the rock. I walk away from Megan. “If you care about Feeon then why don’t you go back to him?” I ask.

“AAHHGG!” shouts Megan.

She walks away from me. “If you only care about going home and not exploring this wonderful world, then go!” shouts Megan.

“Wait a moment! Wonderful world?” I ask.

I start to chuckle and disagree. “No, no, no, no, and no. This world is very dangerous!” I shout.

Megan continues walking away from me. Then she starts to run. “Where are you going!?” I shout.

Megan turns back at me. “Where do you think? Azent kingdom!” she shouts back.

I walk away from Megan. “Azent kingdom is about three or four days away,” I whisper to myself. “I hope that she will be all right. Oh, what am I saying? She will be fine, after all, she’s brave, she’s smart, she’s confident, and…” I stop talking for a moment.

“She is all alone and upset, because she has no mother,” I whisper.

“Auhg! She never tells me anything anymore. Maybe she will be fine on her own,” I say.

I continue walking away from Megan. I take out my map again and look at it for directions. I look ahead and see the misty land, which is the place where the Scorpionos hide underground.

“What does a Scorpiono look like?” I ask myself.

I get out of the Adventure Door Book and turn to the guide page. I search for the word Scorpiono.

“A, Artemis, nope not it. B, Bearon, no that’s not it either. C, Coweon, nope not it. D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, and S! There it is! S for Scorpionos. Page fifty-three,” I say.

I turn to page fifty-three.

“Here it is. Now let’s see. Scorpionos are very dangerous creatures. They have no sense of love or hate or any emotions. They are like scorpions from the Earthling World but much worse. Once you fall or trip into the Scorpiono tunnels there’s no getting out alive,” say the words on the page.

I gulp then continue reading.

“They are giant bugs. They can be eight feet tall and some are even bigger than that. In the Scorpiono tunnels, there are pincers, tentacles, and stingers on the walls. The only way to avoid them is to not touch the walls. Also, in the Scorpionos tunnels, there are booby traps that are very deadly and will trap victims. All Scorpionos have pincers to hold their prey and very sharp stingers to sting them. In the Scorpiono tunnels, there are many skeletons of Humanimals, Dragons, and Gargoyles. The only thing that they think about is stinging the prey's hearts or stomachs,” I finish reading.

I close the book and put my backpack down on the ground. I sit down on a rock and stare at the Misty Land.

Spotty and Timmy both walk away from the rock and head to me. Spotty turns in the direction Megan went. She sighs. “I’m going to follow Megan and talk to her, you talk to Daniel,” says Spotty.

“Ok. Good luck, sis,” says Timmy.

Spotty pats Timmy on the back. “You too, bro.” Spotty runs in the direction that Megan went. Timmy waves to Spotty and she waves back. Timmy takes a deep breath and walks up to me.

“Now, I am not so sure about going in there.” I rub my long scaly Dragon belly. “I mean what if I find myself surrounded by many Scorpionos, or worse?” I ask.

I look down at my belly and start to whimper and shake a little.

“I hate bugs, even the small ones at home. What if I find myself with a sharp stinger in my…” I cannot finish.

Timmy pants like a cute dog. “Don’t worry,” says Timmy.

I gasp and look down at Timmy. “Hey what’s up?” I ask him.

“What I am trying to say is that Scorpionos burn easily,” says Timmy

I point at my mouth. “Fire?” I ask.

Timmy nods. Even after what Timmy told me, I gulp in fear because I still feel scared of going in the Scorpiono Tunnels.

“I don’t know if I want to go in there. I don’t like getting injured. I mean one time I got a paper cut on my thumb and I hated it.” I look at my thumb with the scar from the paper cut.

“And it hurt, really bad,” I say.

Timmy sighs and thinks for a moment. I turn to Timmy. “Here are my two ideas. One is that we hover over the tunnels and call for the old man. The second is that we take a fire torch with us,” I say.

Timmy rubs his chin. “Hmmm, how about we hover over the tunnels for an hour, and if the old man does not answer, we go into the tunnels with two fire torches. How’s that sound?” asks Timmy.

I think for a moment and finally, make up my mind. “I like that plan,” I agree.

Timmy jumps into my backpack. The toy brown dog giggles in excitement. I chuckle and smile at Timmy. I jump into the air and start to fly to the Misty Land where the Scorpiono tunnels might be. I am still feeling very scared to go, but I will do anything to get home anything.
