Chapter 78: Trifecta of Misery

Chapter 78: Trifecta of Misery

With the loud noises of the battlefield, Roy could not hear Hawk’s words. However, the knight archer’s frantic gestures gave him all the information he needed. Roy followed the direction Hawk pointed at and he saw an army of men running toward them from the left flank.

“Marth!” Roy gestured to the knight captain before pointing toward John’s men.

As Marth saw the incoming army, he barked out his orders, “Careful! Disengage! Disengage now!”

Panic set in as the fighters were confused by Marth’s orders. They looked around trying to find answers but to no avail.

“Fred, let’s move back!” Alfone pulled at Fred’s shirt while the latter looked around in confusion.

However, to add fuel to the fire, the red bear was not to let them slowly regain their wits. Seeing the chaos engulfing the battlefield, the red bear opened its mouth and let out a mighty roar.

A dark red aura sprung from the beast and reached to the sky. Its brightness illuminated the field and its texture was so thick that it almost resembled a liquid. Blood, it was a bloody aura that oozed evil and malice.

“Run!”

Marth’s order cut through the momentary silence of the battlefield. Like a herd of sheep, the group of fighters showed their back to the bear and ran in the direction of the lake.

Knowing the danger of the situation, Roy conjured a fireball and threw it at the re-awakened bear.

“You fat, red piece of shit!”

Roy’s spell exploded on the bear’s face, making it stumble backward with a whimper. However, once the dust settled, it was clear that the fireball had not damaged the beast any more than it was previously.

With a speed unbefitting its size, the hulking beast chased after the escaping fighters. Roy followed its trajectory with his eyes before he understood who its target was.

“Thomas!”

Roy’s scream only served to let the young boy turn around for a second to see the beast dashing toward him. As his eyes hollowed from his impending doom, a force pushed him to the side.

After tumbling on the ground for a few meters, Thomas looked up in the direction of the beast. It stood proud and tall, towering over the trees with a man within its jaws—it was Brian.

“No, please…” The beast’s teeth lodged themselves within Brian’s guts. He looked at Alfonse and his group with terrified eyes. “I don’t want to die.”

The beast opened its mouth wide before shoving the middle-aged man even deeper with its tongue. Like a dog eating a piece of meat, it slowly pulled him deeper into its throat, munching on his flesh and bone with each bite.

“Brian!” Alfonse screamed in madness at the sight in front of him. He unsheathed his sword and charged at the beast with the intent to kill.

“You stupid idiot!” Robb dashed after Alfonse using Ghost Step and kicked him to the side. He then immediately unsheathed his katana and blocked the incoming slash coming from his left.

The knight and Robb were locked in stalemate for a second before the young man unsqueezed his grip and dashed to the side. With all of his strength, the knight’s equilibrium shifted forward when Robb stopped resisting. The knight almost fell on his face before he jumped on one leg to regain his balance. Robb then slashed his neck off.

While the young man killed one of the knights, the rest of John’s army seeped through the battlefield. Fred carried Thomas in his arms and ran back to the rest of his friends, while Jack and his group were in a fight with a knight squad behind the red bear.

While all of this was happening, the beast’s aura grew even thicker by the second. Its burned face and wounded body slowly healed, with fibers of flesh contorting, its skin regenerating, and its red fur growing.

Meanwhile, Jack’s frown grew even deeper as the battlefield fell into ever-growing chaos. With the side of his eye, he could see that another knight squad was rushing toward them from the left.

“We need to make a way,” Hassan muttered with enough voice so that only Jack could hear him.

The red-haired young man nodded, “Let’s go in, me and you.”

The two took a stance with their sword before dashing at the knights in front of them. Red aura covered the knights’ swords as they prepared for a clash, but Jack easily pierced through them.

With his skill, he was able to see all of the knights' incoming attacks, before piercing through the first man’s chest with his silver sword. At the same time, Hassan dodged the attacks coming his way with his superior agility before counter-attacking with a horizontal slash.

With the two knights in the middle of the group dead, Jack looked left while Hassan focused on the right. With an unnatural synchrony, the two overwhelmed the knights with fast strikes. As they pushed the two halves of the knight squad further back, the two effectively opened a path for the rest of their group.

“Run!”

Jack’s growl awoke Tyler, Daven, and Parker from their stupor. They saw the opportunity that Jack and Hassan had given them and they dashed through the open road. Parker immediately took the lead with his incredible speed while Daven and Tyler followed him closely. The young boy huffed and puffed with each step, but he did not stop.

As he saw the rest of the fighters, Parker smiled. Marth and Alfonse’s group were closer to the lake, almost reaching the dense trees. The young boy looked up at Hawk who was launching one arrow after the next, killing a knight with each projectile.

Just as he felt safe amongst his people, a thick vine wrapped around his ankle. His whole world was suddenly lifted upside down as the vine pulled him to the sky. The young boy screamed and lashed, before taking out his sword and cutting through the vine. As he was falling down, he turned around only to see the massive red bear’s paw right in front of him.

The beast’s claws shredded the young boy’s body before it flew like a projectile through the air. His neck was twisted, his bones broken, and his blood and guts were seeping through his mangled flesh.

Jack glanced at the young boy’s body before screaming with rage. He charged with no care for his safety at the knights in front of him, letting attacks that he would normally dodge graze and cut through his skin. With each cut he received, Jack slashed a throat or stabbed through an abdomen. Their steel plated armor was nothing more than mashed potato when his silver longsword cuts through it. Their swords ,even when coated by their red aura, would crack only after a few clashes with his.

In the madness of his rage, Jack suddenly found himself in the cross path of two knights’ swords. With no care for his own life, the young man dashed toward the one in front of him, and plunged his sword deep into his ribcage.

Jack closed his eyes in wait for the other knight’s attack to cut through his flesh and end his life. However, even after a few seconds had passed, nothing happened. He looked to his right in confusion only to find the knight’s body, dead on the ground. Next to him was Robb.

“Snap out of it,” Robb barked. “This is not the time.”

Jack stood up and looked around. His teammates had come back to help Hassan, and they were fighting the squad that was rushing toward them from their left.

Jack let out a deep breath as he glared at his enemies, “They’re fucking dead.”
