Chapter 41: Challenge

“You cheeky little bastard.” Roy walked at Jaimie with a smile. No matter how much worry he had in his heart, it all just melted away seeing the young boy’s cheerful attitude.

“Hehehe, I told you I’m not gonna get hit.” Jaimie laughed as Roy scratched his head.

Roy raised his eyebrow at the young boy’s audacious attitude and turned towards Robb. “The kid is getting a big head, we need to show him what an actual fight looks like.”

Robb stretched his arm and grinned. “Well, I’ll be fighting alone next. I’ll show you what a hunt actually looks like.”

“You’re gonna fight the ogre alone?” Jaimie took a step back and looked at Robb with an apprehensive look.

“Yeah,” Robb replied as a matter of fact. “Well, you’re gonna see.”

The trio continued looking around the marketplace when they found a two and a half meter tall ogre near the plaza. Jaimie looked at the herculean creature with trepidation and fear, he could still remember how the monster’s giant club crashed into him and sent him to sleep for a full day.

Robb, on the other hand, had a grin plastered on his face. He took out his Moonlight Steel Katana before winking at Jaimie. “Don’t blink or you’ll miss it.”

Just as he said those words, the young man disappeared from Jaimie’s vision. “Eh, what?”

The young boy’s eyes darted around the plaza before they locked onto the green ogre. Robb flew at least two meters into the sky and raised his silver sword even higher. The monster swung its giant tree club to clash with the young man’s overhead slash. However, Robb’s sword cut through the monster’s weapon like butter.

Both Roy and Jaimie looked at their friend with eyes that wanted to pop out of their sockets and jaws that threatened to touch the ground. Even Robb stopped for a moment in shock at what had just happened. However, he immediately pushed those thoughts and emotions to the back of his mind and slashed at the ogre’s thigh.

The monster fell to the ground as his left leg was cut through, flesh and bone. Robb then finished the ogre’s life by slashing off its neck like a guillotine.

“So, did I do good?” Robb’s nose stretched to the sky as he looked at the star-eyed Jaimie.

Roy, on the other hand, just shook his head at his friend’s antics. “How much of that was you and how much was it the sword?”

Robb laughed with gusto at Roy’s remarks. “A man’s weapon is a man’s strength, so my sword’s power is also my power!”

Roy sighed before looking at the Moonlight Katana with an interested expression. “But damn, that sword is really strong. If we can get more of it, killing the red bear would be easy as hell.”

Robb also looked at his weapon with a smile. “Yeah, we need to go back tomorrow and see if we can get it again.”

Jaimie looked with confusion at Roy and Robb. “Wait, did you guys find this sword somewhere? Can I also get one?”

Roy turned towards the young boy and scratched his chin in thought. “Hmm… Well, we found the sword in a dungeon in the forest, but whether you can get one or not, I honestly don’t know.”

This tale has been unlawfully obtained from Royal Road. If you discover it on Amazon, kindly report it.

Jaimie somehow furrowed his eyebrows even more. “A dungeon? What’s that?”

As Roy realized the gap in knowledge between them, he sighed and started his explanation. As they continued walking around the village, looking for monsters to kill, Roy told Jaimie everything that happened since his accident. He explained how they had separated into different groups and that everyone grew stronger in the past two days. He then told him about the blue ogre and the knights that used red aura, before finally talking about the Wolf’s Den dungeon and all of its mysteries.

“Wait, so when you were outside, it was midday, but when you went inside it became night?” Jaimie’s brain, which was already fried from all the information, just shut down as he stared with an incredulous look at Roy.

“Yeah, and then a magical treasure chest appeared with a poof, and a portal thing that looks like a vertical small lake of milk also appeared behind it. And, get this, when you step into the milk-looking portal, you just appear outside the cave immediately.”

Robb’s explanation made Jaimie furrow his eyebrows further and shake his head. “This is not a stupid joke, right?”

“If we were going to make a joke, we would at least make it logical,” Roy chuckled at his young friend’s reaction.

Jaimie took more than a few seconds to process all of what was being said to him. He then took a deep breath before looking at the two with his usually bright eyes. “I don’t really understand everything, but if we beat these monsters inside this dungeon thing, I can get a sword like that, right?”

Roy looked hesitantly at Jaimie’s hopeful eyes. “Well, that’s what we did to get the sword. But who knows what they can give us next time, maybe they would just throw us a hammer.”

Jaimie covered his mouth and looked deeply at his side in thought.

“Hmm, well, a hammer can also be nice if it’s strong like this sword. Imagine a big hammer that I can go wewoo wewoo and then boom! I smash that ogre in the face!” The young boy turned around like a whirlwind with an imaginary hammer before throwing it at an equally fictitious monster.

“That’s… quite the dark picture. I almost feel bad for the ogres now.” Roy chuckled at Jaimie’s antics before suddenly stopping in his tracks. In front of them was a pack of ten goblins; six of them were small, three were tall, and one was blue.

Roy looked at Jaimie with a firm and serious expression. “Listen to me, be careful of that blue goblin. Its stats are close to yours and it has a long sword, you need to keep running around and never let them catch you, okay?”

Jaimie nodded his head before walking towards the group of monsters. Robb was about to stop him when Roy blocked his hand.

“No, let him handle it on his own. He needs to get used to danger.” Roy’s voice was barely above a whisper and only Robb could hear it.

The latter shook his head and smiled, “And here you were the one who did not want to let him come with us.”

“Well, if he decided to fight, then he needs to do it properly.” Roy’s eyes were fixated on Jaimie. He wanted to see what would the young boy do when he is faced with a hard challenge. But if the situation took a turn for the worst, he could always jump in and protect him.

Jaimie untied his ribbons and took out his ol’ trusty dagger. The goblins, who noticed the young boy’s arrival looked at him with confusion before glee took over their expressions. The small goblins charged at him from all directions, but they were too slow. Rather than jumping back or running away, Jaimie waited until they closed in on him before dashing towards them.

The small goblin that led the charge was stunned at the insanity of the young boy. Just as it raised its knife to stab Jaimie, the latter plunged his dagger into its throat. He then ducked under the monster’s stomach and pushed it at the rest of its group.

The goblin that was second in line was pushed by the first one’s body before Jaimie jumped on top of both of their heads. With his gained forward momentum, he struck a goblin’s face with his knee and quickly stabbed him through the neck.

The young boy pushed the gurgling body of the third goblin at the rest of his group, before finishing off the second one with a stab through the throat. With his back now safe, Jaimie confidently dashed at the last three goblins. They could barely push back the body of their own kin before the young boy appeared in front of them and slashed their guts. Their strikes were haphazardly and disoriented, lacking any sense of control. Jaimie easily dodged them and controlled their armed hands before slashing open their bellies.

Just as Jaimie finished off the six small goblins, the blue monster let out a deep and loud shriek. It pushed over the other tall goblins and marched toward Jaimie with eyes full of rage.
