Chapter 38: Moonlight Waltz

“Damn, they didn’t lie when they said it’s a five-man dungeon. These pests are a hassle to deal with.” Robb swiped the blood off his sword and walked toward Roy to give him a hand.

“You’re damn right,” Roy hissed from the pain before taking Robb’s hand.

As his friend stood up, Robb looked at him with concern. “You’re getting injured quite a lot, is everything alright?”

Roy shook his head and sighed. “I’m getting unlucky in these fights, man. For some reason, the strongest of the pack always focuses on me.”

Robb raised his eyebrow at Roy’s excuse. “You need to keep an eye out for them. Slow down, fight defensively, and always know exactly what’s happening around you, okay?”

Roy nodded at Robb’s words while staring blankly at the ground. “Yeah, I understand. I will be more careful.”

“Well, it’s good if you understand. Wrap up those wounds and let’s move.”

Roy took off his ragged and cut shirt and wrapped it like a bandage over the claw wounds on his chest. After a few minutes, the blood stopped dripping and the pain subsided.

The two continued walking through the wide cave before they found themselves in another chamber. Again, they found a pack of five wolves.

This time, Roy let the wolves charge at him before dodging to the side. With quick movements, he stabbed one of the wolves in its front thigh before jumping back out. His eyes kept darting around from the wolves in front of him, the black beast, and Robb who was fighting another two.

Slowly but surely, Roy chipped away at the two grey wolves that he was fighting. Soon, they accumulated so many wounds that their speed and strength dropped drastically. With this opportunity, Roy immediately dashed in, and slashed the first one’s neck before stabbing the second one through the heart.

Just as he finished off his two opponents, he looked in the direction of the black wolf and found it battling with Robb. While the latter’s speed was still superior, the beast didn’t fall much behind when it used its silver aura.

Roy slowly crept towards the two while waiting for an opportunity to jump in. That soon came when the wolf and Robb clashed and pushed each other to see who is stronger. Once the stalemate happened, Roy dashed toward the beast and stabbed it through the side.

The beast fell and whimpered as blood and guts flowed out of its wound. Without wasting a second, both Roy and Robb slashed it from all directions before the latter finished it with a stab through the neck.

“Nice, good work.” Robb high-fived Roy with a big relieved smile on his face.

“You too.” Roy returned the high-five before looking around the cave. Beyond the chamber, there was a smaller dark passageway. “This damn dungeon isn’t finished yet?”

Robb followed Roy’s line of sight to see the dark passage. “Maybe we still have some monsters to kill. I think there is a strong one at the end of this cave.”

Roy looked at Robb and raised his eyebrow, “Do you think or do you hope for that?”

“Those are just semantics. Hope, think, those are the same thing,” Robb spread his hands and said with a nonchalant face.

Roy shook his head and chuckled. “Well, let’s get moving. Now I also want to see if there is a stronger monster there.”

The duo ventured down the narrow and dim passageway, reminiscent of the cave they initially entered. After some time, they encountered a pair of gray wolves, but they effectively dealt with the creatures.

Their walk through the passage lasted twenty minutes, during which they killed ten wolves including the first two. The crystals brought back the light and the cave opened up to a large chamber. However, instead of the usual pack of five beasts, they found a massive wooden door.

Robb looked blankly at the door before blurting out, “There is definitely a boss monster behind that.”

“Yeah, this place basically screams it,” Roy nodded.

Robb kept staring blankly at the wooden door when his expression turned serious. He scratched his chin and thought for a few seconds before looking at Roy with bright eyes.

“I have an idea. Why don’t you just bomb the boss with your super fireball right at the start? You could easily kill it with one hit.”

Roy’s mouth gaped, “That’s a really bad idea.”

Robb furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, “What, why?”

Roy sighed, “What if it dodges it? Or even if it doesn’t dodge it, what if it doesn’t kill it? You will now have to solo a berserk boss that is probably much faster than that black wolf, while also protecting me.”

Robb’s eyes widened and his cheeks reddened, “Okay, okay, just forget that idea.” He then cleared his throat. “So, what’s the plan?”

“Well, we need to get it wounded and weak first, and if it’s as fast or even faster than you, we need to catch it off-guard and blast its face off.”

“Sounds like a plan,” Robb nodded. “Now, should we open the door?”

Roy smiled, “Sure, let’s go.”

After the two opened the wooden door with a cranking noise, they entered a giant room that was only illuminated with the moonlight from the sky. As Roy looked at the giant hole in the ceiling and the moon it showed, his heart clenched.

“What the fuck happened, it was just morning when we entered,” Robb stole the words right off Roy’s mouth.

However, they had no time to contemplate the reasons for their time travel or teleportation. A beast that stood at a meter and a half slowly walked out of the darkness and basked within the moonlight. The giant wolf’s fur was black mixed with silver, and a crescent-shaped white stripe covered its right eye.

Roy quickly charged at the giant beast before changing his direction at the last moment. The wolf’s jaws bit at the spot where Roy had just been, while he slashed at its leg.

The beast whimpered and howled, but the attacks did not stop. Robb followed after Roy and slashed at the side, leaving a deep gash in its chest. The giant wolf rolled around and jumped out of the two’s encirclement.

The monster growled with hate-filled eyes and a silver aura covered its body. Its size, which was already huge, grew even further, and its fangs and claws became sharper and stronger. It dashed with an otherworldly speed at Robb, who could barely jump and block the beast’s claws.

Roy capitalized on the opportunity and dashed at the wolf’s open side. However, just as he was about to slash it open, the beast turned and opened its jaw wide. An electric current flowed inside its mouth and concentrated into a bolt.

Before Roy could even react, the lightning bolt pierced through his shoulder. The wolf immediately followed it with a smash from its paw that sent the young man flying to the corner of the room.

Roy crashed into the rock wall before landing on his butt in a daze. The back of his head was dripping blood while his ribs could be seen through his mangled flesh.

Robb let out a war cry as he dashed toward the silver wolf and slashed through its front leg. He then jumped back out and assessed the situation. The beast growled at him in rage, but the wounds on its body hampered its movements. However, Robb did not charge at the beast but waited for it to pounce at him.

Without wasting any movement, the young man sidestepped the monster’s attack and stabbed its rear left leg. In such a way, Robb kept baiting the beast and chipping away at it slowly.

However, the silver wolf was not going to let itself get played so easily. As it noticed that its movements had become sluggish and slow, lightning struck all around it. As the beast was gathering the electricity for its long-range attack, Robb looked behind it at Roy who was still laying on the ground. His hand was raised and it aimed at the beast.

Without exchanging any words, Robb understood what Roy wanted from him. He took a deep breath and stayed still in his place while staring at the giant wolf that was charging up its ultimate attack. The amount of electricity that was being concentrated was manifold greater than the one that struck Roy. Robb had no delusion about it—if he got hit, he would die.

Just as the shoulders of the monsters dipped, Robb immediately dashed out. The wolf launched its greatest attack with a mighty roar, and the electric bolt flew with godly speed.

Robb looked back at the spot he was just in a moment ago to see an electric storm rage in front of him. The ground was destroyed and burned to a crisp. His eyes then darted to the other side of the room. Roy held a massive fireball in his hand with a big smile on his face.

He launched his spell at the giant wolf who was still recovering from throwing its attack. In a split second, the fireball exploded into an inferno and engulfed the beast with the flames of hell.
