Chapter 60: Smithing Stop

As Roy and the two groups reached Roger’s house, they found Robb standing next to the stairs.

“Is he in the room?” Roy walked up and asked.

Robb nodded before looking at the room upstairs. “Mr. Jacob is taking care of him right now. He told me not to worry, Jaimie’s injuries were much worse and he recovered in a day.”

Both Fred and Alfonse let out a sigh of relief. Alfonse looked up at their usual meeting room with a complicated expression, “Good. I’m glad that he is gonna be fine.”

“Let’s sit down,” Roy gestured with his head toward the sets of cushions that were on the floor of the living room. There was only Lorenz who was taking a nap, with the majority of the villagers either outside the house or in the kitchen.

As they sat down, Roy looked at Jaimie who was still holding on to the silver iron and the forging scroll. “We need to find a good place to hide these things.”

Alric nodded at Roy’s suggestion, “Yeah, you’re right. We need a warehouse where we can hide our stuff. Even those blue goblin swords and bows are very useful, a basement would be a good place to keep them.”

As Roy was listening to Alric’s suggestion, Tyler cut in, “Oh, I almost forgot.” He then took out a large silver and black pelt from one of his pouches. “This is what we got from that treasure chest.”

Everyone looked with amazement at the quality of the wolf’s pelt. It was not damaged in any way, and the fur was of the highest quality.

“Did you get something else with it? Like a scroll or something,” Roy asked Tyler with expectant eyes.

The middle-aged man shook his head, “No, that’s the only thing we got.”

Roy looked down and slumped his shoulders before shaking his head slightly, “That’s okay, just keep an eye out for a scroll that has the name of this pelt. I think these materials come in pairs.”

Roy then looked at Alric, “I don’t think this house has a basement, but I’m not sure about Jeff’s. Did you guys check?”

“They don’t have a basement, but they have an attic,” Alfonse responded. “It should work the same.”

Roy took a few seconds to process all the information before coming up with a plan of action, “Okay, for weapons like the goblin swords and knives, we can just put them in Jeff’s attic if he is alright with it.” He then took a deep breath. “But for things like the wolf pelt or the red gems from the ogres, I think each group should handle their stuff.”

Robb nodded at Roy’s suggestion, “Yeah, things will get mixed up, especially the red gems.”

Alfonse covered his chin in thought for a few seconds before voicing out his thoughts, “Pouches are good enough for just some small red gems, but if we get more and bigger things, we would need backpacks. I can ask Jeff if he can lend us some.”

Roy nodded at Alfonse’s remark before checking his jacket pockets. They had more than a couple of red gems; the ones that they got from the blue ogres were especially large.

“Please ask him, it would help us a lot,” Roy responded. He then took a deep breath, “Okay, so to recap. Both my group and Robb’s got materials, Alfonse’s got a longsword, and Jack got a shield. As for Marth’s, I don’t know, he is probably at Jeff’s place now or hunting.”

Conrad nodded at Roy’s words. “I think we should go to Jeff’s place. There is no use just waiting here, let’s go ask him for those backpacks.”

While Alfonse and Fred were a little hesitant, Roy immediately affirmed Conrad’s words, “You’re right, we can’t be wasting time. Let’s go get that stuff done, and come back to check with Mr. Jacob.”

While Alfonse was still torn, he soon understood his responsibility as a leader, “Okay, let’s do that.”

As such, the members of all the groups made their way to Jeff’s house, leaving only Robb and Jaimie behind. As they walked through the street, Roy couldn’t help but notice how clean it all was. It was as if this place alone was spared from the apocalypse.

“Did you guys take care of the corpses?” Roy looked at Alfonse and asked.

“No, not just us,” Alfonse shook his head. “The villagers came too and helped. We buried everyone in the fields, even those goblins. Mr. Jacob told us it’s better this way since they might spread illness if we left them under the sun.”

Roy raised an eyebrow in surprise, “That’s some good work. At least the smell is so much better now.”

Alfonse nodded and chuckled, “Yeah, it was really bad before. At least now people don’t need to breathe the smell of rotten meat.”

It didn’t take them long to reach Old Jeff’s place, in only a minute they were in front of his house. Compared to Roger’s, it was much busier, with men and women of all ages helping out with chores. Even Roger himself was digging a trench alongside the other men to protect this new home. Marth’s group was also helping.

“Well, I’ll go in to check with Jeff. You guys go and help the men with whatever they need. No use just sitting on our asses.”

Alric nodded at Alfonse’s words, “Understood.”

With those words, Alfonse walked inside the house while both his and Robb’s group scattered to help the men with their various tasks. As the moon was already high up in the sky, the villagers put torches all around the house to illuminate their surroundings.

With nothing left to do, Roy made his way toward Marth and his group. Each of them was wielding a shovel and digging a small trench around the house. There were also wooden spikes put as a first layer of defense right in front of where the men were digging.

“How was the dungeon clear?” Roy tapped Marth’s shoulder. “You got anything good?”

Marth turned around and showed off his new look. His old white chest-piece was now replaced with a silver and black one. Its color was sharper and it looked more robust.

Marth tapped his chest a few times while laughing, “Yes, we did. This thing is incredible.”

“It’s a shame that the chest only had that piece,” Gerald lamented. “But you were right, the rewards were good. If we could do it ten or so times, we will be golden.”

“Yeah, plus I feel much more comfortable fighting those ogres now,” Marth grinned. “We fought a pack of foxes while coming back to the village, and they left no scratch on it.”

“Yeah, they told us you fought a blue ogre with Robb,” Clark smiled. “Can we now fight it too?”

Roy scanned Marth’s chest piece while scratching his chin for a few seconds, “Hmm, maybe if you had Jack’s shield and Alfonse’s sword. If you had those I would be confident you guys would win.”

“Oh, Jack got a shield?” Marth’s interest was piqued. “How good is it?”

“I haven’t checked it yet,” Roy shrugged his shoulders. “We can talk all about that later in the meeting. After that, we can go check on that Red Bear.”

“Oh, are we going?” Marth raised an eyebrow.

“Yeah, but we won’t all go,” Roy nodded before looking at everyone in Marth’s group. “Who is the fastest of you guys?”

“I am,” Peter raised his hand.

“Good, so you and Marth are going to join us,” Roy responded. “We will get two from Alfonse’s and Jack’s group also.”

“So, it’s just going to be a scouting party?” Marth asked.

“Yeah, we will just keep an eye on it for an hour or so,” Roy nodded. “We just need to have an idea of how strong it actually is. That way we don’t waste too much time preparing more than we need to.”

“Yeah, it’s finally coming,” Marth smiled. “I’ve been dying to see what that safe settlement is.”

“Same here,” Roy laughed. He then turned around to see Alfonse coming out of Jeff’s place with a bunch of backpacks in his hand and around his shoulders. “Well, I’ll see you guys later.”

“See you in a bit,” Marth bid Roy farewell.

Roy then quickly made his way to Alfonse and took one of the backpacks. It wasn’t as big as Jacob’s, but it at least offered much more storage than his two jacket pockets.

With his backpack equipped, Roy walked back to Roger’s place, where he found Mr. Jacob sitting on the usual bench smoking from his pipe. Robb and Jaimie were sitting next to him.

“How is Derek?” Roy asked with concern.

“Don’t worry about it,” Jacob shook his head. “The wounds are closing on their own. He is just a little bit shocked. In a few hours, he should be up on his feet.”

“That’s good to hear,” Roy breathed out a sigh of relief. “Thank you, mister Jacob. You’re doing a lot for us.”
