Chapter 70: Digging

With the task of digging the trench on his shoulders, Roy and his two friends immediately got to work. The first task was to mark the space that they would need to dig through. They used branches and pieces of wood to draw a semi-circle around the lake.

With the task of marking the trench complete, they took up their shovel, pickaxes, and mattocks and started digging through the soil. With their superhuman strength, they were able to cut through the roots with ease and rapidly dig through the ground.

The speed of three Sentinel rank young men was a marvel to look at. With each push of their shovel, they took out a large portion of the earth, which they quickly threw to the side. Moreover, their pace was not something even an experienced builder could hope to match. Not only were their hands speedy, but they did not get tired or drop their pace.

“Good job, you guys are doing some good work.”

After around fifteen minutes, Marth and his group joined up with Roy’s. Seeing that they already dug a meter and a half deep hole, Marth couldn’t help but be impressed.

“You guys are done with the booby trap?” Roy looked up and asked.

Marth smiled and gestured with his head toward the trap, “The digging is done. We just need to get the trap from Lorenz.”

“We need to wait until noon for that,” Robb responded. “Mr. Jacob will need to lace it with the poison before we put it there.”

Marth nodded at Robb’s response, “So our job is done with that for now. Mind if we join you guys?”

“By all means,” Roy smiled. “Let’s get going.”

With Marth’s group joining up with Roy’s, their speed and efficiency went up by leaps and bounds. Minutes quickly turned into hours, but none of the men felt any more fatigued. Like ant workers digging a colony, the two groups dug through the path Roy had marked. By the time three hours passed by, they were already a third of the way done.

“Good work,” Marth commented as he got rid of the dirt at the side of the trench. “With this pace, we should be done before sunset. This is the fastest I‘ve ever dug a trench in my life.”

“Man, you’re so right,” Gerald laughed. “The last time I had to dig a trench, it took us a day to do this much with twenty men.”

“Those twenty men that you worked with couldn’t wrestle a wolf, now could they?” Godwin joined in with a laugh, before looking with lament at his shovel. “If only we had bigger ones, we would be done by more than half by now.”

“It’s something we can ask Lorenz for next time,” Roy shrugged his shoulders. “It would help us a lot, even if it’s for just building houses or barracks.”

Clark nodded at Roy’s words, “Yeah, we will need to build more houses once we clear out the monsters. Most of the ones in the village are just completely destroyed, especially with there being so many more ogres lately.”

“That would be a good problem to think about,” Gerald chuckled.

While the two groups were chatting and working at the same time, Hawk jumped down from a tree branch, before signaling with his fingers to evacuate.

None of the men spoke a word, they immediately understood what was going on. Marth got rid of the dirt that was accumulating on the side quickly, while the rest took out their toolset and followed Hawk’s direction.

Within a few minutes, they were out of the bear’s territory—only then could they breathe out a sigh of relief.

“We should stay out for a bit,” Hawk mentioned. “It might be drinking and trying to catch some fish.”

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

Marth nodded at Hawk’s words before turning to look at everyone, “Should we go and do the dungeon in the meantime? That way we’re not wasting our time.”

“Yeah, good call,” Clark nodded. “You said we’re gonna split the group today, how are we gonna do that?”

“Well, you go with Godwin and Peter,” Marth responded before looking at Gerald. “Should we go together?”

Gerald shrugged and smiled, “Should be fun.”

Seeing the disparity between the two groups, Roy furrowed his eyebrows. He then looked at Jaimie and asked, “Why don’t you go with Marth’s group? You can show off your new tricks.”

“Sure,” Jaimie nodded all excited.

“What about you?” Marth raised an eyebrow. “You gonna do it alone?”

“He should be fine!” Robb laughed and tapped Roy’s back. “What do you say, wanna go for a race? Whoever finishes the dungeon first wins.”

Roy shook his head at Robb’s antics, “That’s not fair, but sure. Let’s do that.”

Robb laughed at Roy’s response, “Good, at least you’re a man.”

Seeing the two joking around, Marth shook his head before looking at Hawk, “How about you? What will you do?”

“I’m gonna wait for my group,” the knight shrugged. “You guys can go have your fun, I will be waiting outside.”

The group of nine men made their way to the dungeon before each group went in one by one.

As Marth entered along with Gerald and Jaimie, Robb walked toward the entrance of the Wolf Den, “See you later, loser.”

Roy shook his head at Robb’s words as his friend disappeared. He then quickly ran in and chose the easy difficulty.

While his staff was still in his backpack, Roy did not feel the need to use it just yet. He just unsheathed his trusty black sword and trudged along the ever-tightening cave.

By this point, the first few grey wolves did not even register as a threat to Roy. While he didn’t have any sword-related skills or a good melee weapon like Robb, his stats more than covered his shortcomings. His speed made it so that the normal wolves could not keep up with him, and his strength compensated for the quality of his sword.

Once Roy reached the crystal-lit part of the cave, he took out his Moon Staff from his backpack.

“Well, let’s see how good you are.”

With his new staff equipped, Roy walked toward the chamber where he found the pack of five wolves. As he activated his spell, he felt a weird sensation. Mana flew from within his body through his hand and into the wooden staff. The white moon gem shone a bright orange before his spell was activated.

With just using 10% of his mana, Roy was able to conjure a medium-sized fireball in front of the head of his Moon Staff. He then launched it at the unsuspecting pack of beasts before they exploded with a massive ball of flames.

“Awoo!”

One of the grey wolves that stood at the rightmost whimpered after being thrown on the ground from the explosion. Both of its left legs were burned, with the back one being completely blown off.

Seeing the beast suffering on the ground, Roy unsheathed his sword and ended its life. As he looked at the dead beast in front of him, Roy felt a knot in his heart.

“I’m sorry… I have nothing against you, but this world is just cruel like this. If I wanna live, I have to kill you.”

Even though there was no one alive to hear him, Roy felt the need to say those words. They were more for himself than for anyone else.

With the job in this chamber done, Roy took a deep breath before continuing on his way. The second pack’s fate was not much different from the first one. With a single medium-sized fireball, Roy was able to take care of them.

After going through the last passage, the young man was in front of the Boss' room. As he opened the door, Roy clenched his staff and readied his spell. He poured half of his mana into making one of the biggest fireballs he had ever conjured. Just as the door fully opened, Roy launched his spell toward the middle of the room.

Boom!

With a deafening explosion, half of the boss room was engulfed in flames. The amount of power that was generated was almost the same as the fireball he used to kill the blue ogre in the middle of the road outside the village.

Roy grinned as he looked at the Moon Staff in his hand, “This is good—real good.”

Even though the Staff was more attuned to moon and lightning magic, the increase in his power was not small. Roy felt as if the staff boosted his fireball by at least 50%.

Thinking about lightning magic, Roy couldn’t help but remember the skill scroll that he had won along with Robb on their first dungeon clear. I need to understand what those classes are…

As Roy was lost in his thoughts, the usual floating words appeared in front of him.

“Congratulations on clearing the easy difficulty of the Wolf’s Den small-scale dungeon. You can receive your rewards from the treasure chest, and exit through the portal.”
