The fog didn’t move but people around him did and a girl who posed the question threw something on the ground.
"Is this a joke? Did you give him something against my powers?!"
There was a hint of shock in her voice, a fear even but Hildebrant couldn't lie, at least not in the normal way, and as his lips moved on their own so were his thoughts.
"It's not and he did not. That is how I became ascender or remember it happening."
Before he was human.
From that moment he was ascender.
It was not about his life experience, but perspective.
Truth seeker used their mystical power to include people in a dream-like state and then questioned them about their secrets while people could not refuse them, but it didn’t mean he could not twist the truth in his favor.
Truth and lie in the end were extremely fleeing and truth easily could become a lie and lie a truth.
Scratching of wood passed his mind and the fog he was submerged into trembled little.
"Fine. Let us continue. Tell me more about that ship."
"Why are you asking him such useless questions should you not ask about important things?"
David stopped her but the girl didn’t sound so happy about it.
"You should take care of yourself, David, I didn't come here to argue with you but follow my lady's orders and she also told me to be wary of you."
David sneered.
"Of course she did, I am not her puppet after all."
Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.
"You dare!"
The chair fell to the ground and shattered. The sound of it made Hildebrant perceive his surroundings in a cleaner way than he expected and the fog that clouded his mind also slowly began to collapse until Tristana grited her teeth.
"We will talk later."
She said and the fog surrounding his spirit stabilized and his mind descendent even deeper into the fog of his mind.
How deep he was?
Deep enough to no longer hear the surrounding sound just Tristana's question that came from all directions.
"Do you remember the rules of sanctuary?"
"Yes."
He learned them from David.
"Recite them."
She commanded and Hildebrant followed.
"First, you can't kill without good reason."
"Second, you can't steal from others."
"Third, if you sense time is near you are to let yourself be swallowed by the foundation pillar."
"Fourth, you can't be without a job for more than a month."
"Five, killing children younger than five is prohibited."
"Six, each year each person living in great halls needs to bring tribune to their respective lords, and in exchange lords need to take care of their subject."
"Seven, no one is allowed to ascend in the sanctuary."
Finishing he left his mind to rest until the next question came.
"In which hall did you live before?"
He pondered about the answer and remembered the words told to him by David.
There were four great halls each hosting the lord and their subject, commanding respect for anyone who came around, but Hildebrant wasn’t part of this system.
"None."
His voice came out and then the fog that clouded his mind slowly receded until he again gazed at the room, he woke up this morning.
It was the same but also different.
Tristana sat on a new chair biting her nails, while the old chair broken and shattered littered on floor all around her.
David was not far away from observing her until the truth seeker gracefully stood up and glared at David with hate and fury.
"I checked what I needed you can apply him for any caste you want but don’t expect me to help you again."
Storming out of the room all she left behind yourself was waste and destruction.
Seeing her leave David sighed in relief.
"She is finally gone."
Hildebrant tilted his head as he watched a boy a little older than him talking as if he lived for centuries.
It was a weird feeling, but he didn’t hate it.
"Do you have some past together?"
David's petite body almost leaped on celling as he grasped his heart.
"No! Of course not."
His entire young baby face turned red as he said that.
"We were just friends. At one point until we weren’t."
"Why, she looked like she liked you."
"That’s…."
David scratched his head.
"I started dating with another girl that I was in love at that time."
Hildebrant blinked and then without thinking he blurred out.
"Beast."
