Smiling sun
Peace before storm

Peace before storm

The night passed, and after rolling out of bed and dressing up, Hildebrant descended the stairs and cowered his eyes with his hand when sharp sunlight fell on his body.

He still wasn’t comfortable with light touching his skin, but there was no longer an instinctive fear of it and the pain that came when it burned his skin. Now, it was just a long, long-born fear that became a habit after years of living in darkness and being cowered by black clothes.

"Are you all, right?"

Asked David who already started putting food on the table.

"Yes, I am."

Hildebrant said and made his way down and then sat behind the table while David put the last of the fruits on the plate and then also sat down and clasped his hands.

"Protector of the underworld, master of lies, bless the food we eat and give us strength by consuming it."

Observing him Hildebrant waited for him to finish and then they were both supposed to start eating but while David threw himself into his plate full of meat Hildebrant just stared at him.

"When can I go?"

Stopping eating David's gaze fell on him.

"Didn’t I already say it is dangerous to go out without gaining your memories back?"

"I don’t like to owe something to others, plus my memory is not crumbled as you think."

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

Some parts were muddled but most of his broken mind was back and held together and even some missing pieces slowly came back making his desire to explore and find a way home even stronger.

Sighing, David put his cutleries down.

"You don’t have anything right now, if you went out on your own you would need to go hunt around and outside the sanctuary. Your abilities are not bad but there are creatures more dangerous and cunning than any monster or best."

Hildebrant titled his head.

A creature more dangerous than a monster?

"What creature are you talking about?"

"Humans of course."

Silent fell and all that could be heard was the bustling of people outside.

"Is that a joke?"

David shook his head.

"It might not look that way, but the sanctuary is in constant conflict. The four lords are basically at a standstill after the fall of Walldrifters but it will not remain that way for long and their people already started to act. Another thing is you need to join some caste if you want to survive."

"Do you mean the one Tristania mentioned?"

"Similar."

There was pain in David's voice, but his face showed no emotions.

"There are many castes in four great halls and after the fall of Walldrifter even more came to be, the main ones in the great hall overseered by Cecilia are truth seekers, exorcists, faithful, and workers."

"What happens if I join none?"

"You die."

Hildebrant raised his eyebrows with a questioning look and David smiled with sadness.

"For what do you think rulers are for? No one knows how they work but if you disobey them you will die, there is no way around it."

Taking a deep breath Hildebrant nodded his head and silently threw himself into his plate and David did the same. They both dug into their food, minding their thought and pondering about different things but Hildebrant hoped that what David said was no case. If it was through, he would need to serve one of the lords and he had no time for such things.

Finishing their breakfast Hildebrant helped to clean the plates and then David looked at Hildebrant form up and down and after a while of silently looking at the ground he smiled.

"Don’t you want to go with me to hunt for some food?"

His hand drying the plate with cloth stopped and then his head turned to David with fire of desire flickering in his irises.

"When do we go?"
