Chapter 35

The beast reveled in its own greatness, “I truly am the strongest!” It proclaimed.

It looked at its massive claws, “with this village as a starting point my plan can truly come to fruition!”

“The hell are you talking about!” Mia yelled, clearly livid.

The colossal monster cracked a smile, “controlling this village was just a start… With enough time the pesky villagers would bring more and more sacrifices. With each sacrifice my power grows, enough for me to evolve further… And trample the whole world”.

Mia clenched her fists, her anger and frustration mixed and melded together.

“You really are a beast huh? What a horrible goal… You’d kill and devour all these innocent people just for you to grow? You disgust me!” She pointed her finger at the beast and took a prolific stance, “a creature like you shouldn’t be allowed to exist!”

“Ironic coming from humans like you. “Huntsmen exist to hunt and kill us don’t they… You’re doing the same thing for slightly different reasons… DON’T YOU SEE GIRL? WE’RE THE SAME!”

It enjoyed its own remarks for several moments… Enough in fact to give Hikaru a chance.

“AHAHAHAHAHAHA! It truly is wonderful… I can imagine it… Exterminating every single one of you rats”.

A silence swept through the area. Both huntsmen were on edge. With each remark and threat the beast uttered ate away at their confidence, at their pride.

“You’ll regret those words… These aspirations of killing us will never happen”.

The beast turned, facing Hikaru and his doom blast infused golem. Unlike before, where Hikaru planned to blast away the beast's tendrils, he came up with a new idea, one that he had confidence in.

Hikaru was positioned on the golems arm, in the stance of what looked like a catapult.

“What's this? Going to hurl yourself into my mouth? I’m glad you have come to your senses, you lowly maggot”.

The golem shifted its weight and bended its knees, increasing the force in which Hikaru would be flung.

“HIKARU WHAT ARE YOU DOING!? I DON’T THINK SUICIDE IS THE RIGHT ANSWER!” Mia screamed from the other side, but her yells fell on deaf ears.

“I can do this, I’ve taken on strong beasts like this guy in the past”. Hikaru psyched himself up, stretching his shoulders and cracking his knuckles.

Whilst Hikaru was mentally preparing, the beast opened its mouth incredibly wide, revealing the black abyss of its throat.

“Come on now!” It bellowed, “I’m ready anytime!”

FOOOOOSH!

The golem launched hikaru off of its shoulders, sending him up through the air, directly in line with the beast's face.

Time seemed to slow down. Mia watched in horror, imagining the worst possible outcome.

“Don’t die you bastard. If you keel over then who’s gonna cook me such delicious food”, she said quietly. She began stressing over the idea of her newfound comrade dying. She had a slurry of ideas, most of which to move forward, one step, one movement.

Mia couldn’t move an inch… Deep inside of her she knew that this was his choice and his choice alone. Mia was unaware of his plan but knew she had to trust him. He was one of her commanding-officers, but most of all, her friend.

Mid air.

Time, still in a state of slowness.

“This will work, one of these to the face and it’ll all be over”.

Hikaru, now directly in front of the beast’s face, prepared himself. Droplets of sweat rained down his face, colossal amounts of stress and worry burdened his heart, and yet, none of that stopped him.

“GO ROT IN HELL YOU BASTARD!”

“BLOOD ARCANA NUMBER ONE! KUGEL!”

A large bullet of pure blood shot from his fingers, hurling towards the beast.

FEEEEEEEEOOOOOOOOOOOWAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMM!

It made contact, causing a massive explosion.

“Yes! It worked. I may not be super talented when it comes to arcana spells, but I’m pretty damn good with the basic ones”.

Hikaru was overjoyed as he made his way back to the ground.

A cloud of reddish-black smoke whirled around the beast's face.

“Why isn’t that bastard collapsing?” Mia thought, a feeling of worry echoed through each word.

Hikaru, now nearing the ground, imagined the overjoyed faces of Nomi and her mother, but also of his Captain, who he still had the plan of beating up for ditching them.

“I’m glad I got to show off in front of Mi-”

SCCCCCHHHHHHHHIKKKK!

“GAH!” A spurt of blood shot out of HIkaru’s mouth. “What the hell?” He looked down and his eyes widened. A large tendril had skewered him, “but… I-”

The smoke cleared from the beast's face.

“Ugh, pathetic… I’ll give you points for creativity though. I didn’t know or expect you humans to have such a strange power”.

The beast shook its tendril and flung Hikaru’s body to the side.

“Alright, I’m done playing with the boy… Time to play with the girlie over here”. It winced at Mia, “oh this’ll be mighty fun”.

“HIKARU!” Mia looked at his seemingly lifeless body, “shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! Shit! SHIT!” Tears began to fill her eyes, “it’s happening again… I’m gonna lose everyone who’s important to me again… Captain… Where are you? This guy… He’s too strong”.

She fell to her knees, a waterfall of tears continuing down her face.

“Don’t cry little human… You’ll soon see him again… WHEN YOU’RE DEAD!”

WHAAP!

The beast whipped a tendril towards her, smacking her into a pile of rubble nearby.

“Dammit, what do I do? Captain… Please”.

Mia slowly began getting up, with each movement her muscles ached. A thin stream of blood made its way down her mouth to her chin.

“I need help… Please…”
