The tension in the air was almost tangible as Kaya observed the increasing number of blank-eyed humans from her vantage point. They stood still, eerie and silent, their numbers swelling with each passing moment. Determined to seize the initiative, Kaya decided to strike first.
"Mages, prepare your fireballs! Archers, ready your arrows!" Kaya’s voice was firm and resolute, cutting through the oppressive silence.
The mages began their incantations, hands glowing with arcane energy, while the archers nocked arrows, their bows taut and ready.
"Fire!" Kaya commanded.
The night sky, illuminated by the crescent moon, suddenly blazed with fiery trails as fireballs shot towards the blank-eyed humans. Arrows followed in quick succession, the hiss of their flight a chilling counterpoint to the crackling of the fireballs. Explosions rocked the ground, and a thick cloud of dust rose, obscuring the battlefield.
Kaya squinted, trying to see past the dust and debris. As it settled, her heart sank. The blank eyed humans stood unharmed, a shimmering barrier protecting them. Not a scratch marred their ranks.
"They have a barrier.." Kaya muttered to herself, quickly deciding their next move.
"Prepare to launch another attack!" she ordered, her voice unwavering despite the ominous turn of events. As the mages and archers readied themselves again, a sudden movement caught her eye.
The blank-eyed humans, seemingly provoked by the initial attack, began to charge. About fifty of them broke away from the main group, rushing towards the settlement with alarming speed.
Kaya allowed herself a grim smile. This was what she had hoped for, to provoke them into an attack that would trigger the traps set around the settlement.
"Stay focused!" Kaya shouted.
"Vanguard, hold your ground! Do not let anything pass you!" The vanguard responded instantly, forming a tight formation, their shields interlocking as they braced for the impact.
The charging blank eyed humans closed the distance quickly. As they neared the traps, several were caught in snares and pitfall traps, their momentum halted by sharp spikes and hidden pitfalls. Kaya seized the moment.
"Mages, archers, fire!" she commanded once more.
Fireballs and arrows flew again, striking the advancing enemy. Some blank-eyed humans were hit, their bodies igniting or being pierced by arrows. Others, however, dodged the attacks with unnatural agility, closing in on the vanguard.
The clash was fierce. The vanguard held their ground, shields raised and spears thrusting forward. The blank-eyed humans attacked with relentless ferocity, their swords clanging against the vanguard’s defenses.
Amidst this chaos, Kaya noticed something alarming, suddenly out of the shadows, cloaked figures emerged, slipping past the front lines with deadly intent.
"Rogues!" Kaya shouted a warning, but it was too late for some.
The cloaked figures, blank eyed human rogues, moved with lethal precision. They turned swiftly after passing the vanguard, striking from behind. Several vanguard warriors fell, grievously wounded or killed outright.
The rogues who succeeded killing the vanguard then aimed for the healers next, but Kaya was ready. She moved with lightning speed, her spear crackling with electricity. She intercepted the first rogue with a powerful thrust, impaling him. Her red hair seemed to float in the air, charged with electric energy.
"Now I join the battle!" Kaya yelled, her voice electrifying her comrades.
"Gabby, take command of the mages and archers!" Gabby nodded, her face set in determined lines.
"Understood, Kaya!" she replied, quickly rallying the mages and archers to continue their assault.
Kaya’s movements were a blur as she engaged the remaining rogues. Her spear danced with deadly precision, each strike accompanied by a burst of electricity. She killed them one by one, not giving them a moment to regroup or retaliate.
The air was thick with the smell of ozone and blood. Kaya’s spear pierced through another rogue, and she yanked it free, wiping the blood from her face. "Healers, focus on the vanguard!" she commanded. "Rogues, assist them!"
The battlefield was a chaotic whirl of combat. The healers, under Kaya’s direction, moved quickly to tend to the wounded vanguard, their magic knitting flesh and bone with practiced ease. The Stormbringers' rogues, who had been guarding the healers, now joined the fray, their blades flashing as they attacked the remaining blank eyed humans.
A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
The battle raged on with relentless intensity. Despite the rogues’ support, the vanguard was beginning to falter under the ceaseless assault of the blank-eyed humans. Kaya, sensing the fatigue and dwindling morale of her front line, made a swift decision. She disengaged from her current skirmish and switched her focus to the enemy’s backline the healers, mages, and archers. Before charging, she issued a command to Gabby.
"Gabby, I need you to cover me. Have the mages and archers provide support," Kaya ordered, her tone leaving no room for hesitation.
Gabby, despite her reluctance and understanding of the risks, nodded. "Understood," she replied, rallying the mages and archers to focus their fire on the targets Kaya would engage.
Electricity crackled around Kaya, her body becoming a blur as she charged toward the enemy’s rear. She weaved through the chaos of the battlefield with deadly grace, dodging and deflecting every attack aimed at her. Her movements were like a lethal dance, a blend of agility and power.
As she reached the enemy healers, she struck with precision, killing many of them swiftly. The enemy mages and archers retaliated fiercely, forcing her to switch to a defensive stance. Fireballs and arrows rained down upon her, but she managed to divert their attention, buying precious time for her vanguard.
Glancing back, Kaya saw that her plan was working. The vanguard, bolstered by the rogues’ support, were gaining ground. Only five blank-eyed human warriors remained. Kaya smiled grimly, her resolve strengthening. She had to hold out just a bit longer.
Breathing heavily, Kaya disengaged from the enemy backline, dodging attacks as she retreated. Once back with her vanguard, she quickly assessed the situation. With the remaining enemy warriors in her sights, she launched herself into the fray, her spear flashing with lethal energy. Each strike was precise and deadly, and soon the last of the blank-eyed warriors fell.
Kaya paused, her chest heaving as she tried to regulate her breathing. She planted her spear in the ground and closed her eyes, focusing on steadying herself. She could not afford to show weakness.
When she opened her eyes, she addressed her warriors, "Good job. Stay alert; the battle isn’t over yet."
As she moved past the vanguard, the healers approached her, their hands glowing with healing magic. Kaya waved them off with a smile. "Save your energy for those who need it more," she said firmly.
Gabby, having taken command of the mages and archers, sighed in relief as she saw Kaya return relatively unscathed. With renewed focus, Gabby ordered another volley.
The night sky once again filled with fireballs and arrows, striking the enemy’s barrier, which now showed signs of weakening. Cracks spread across its surface, and the once brilliant blue glow dimmed.
Just as Gabby prepared for another assault, the enemy mages and archers began to retreat, joining the remaining blank-eyed humans.
Gabby ordered a halt. "Hold your fire. They’re pulling back," she announced.
Kaya approached Gabby, her expression thoughtful. "We need to take this opportunity to rest, especially the vanguard," she suggested.
Gabby agreed. "Yes, they need it." Suddenly, she pinched Kaya's cheek, her face twisting into a stern yet teasing scowl.
"Don’t ever pull a stunt like that again without a plan," she admonished.
Kaya, taken aback, repeatedly nodded. "Okay, okay," she replied, her demeanor momentarily that of a chastised child. It was a stark contrast to her battlefield persona.
As Kaya rubbed her reddened cheek, John approached them.
"Report, the vanguard is holding up well. And we unfortunately lost seven warriors in total," he reported solemnly.
Kaya's face fell, and she sighed deeply. "It’s inevitable, but the responsibility is still mine," she murmured.
John knelt, his voice earnest. "Don’t be too hard on yourself, leader. We all respect your decisions and are grateful for your leadership."
Gabby interjected, aiming to change the mood. "John, how do you think we’re holding up?"
"If we keep this momentum, we’ll win," John replied confidently.
Before Gabby could respond, a sudden movement from the blank-eyed humans caught everyone's attention. They began to march in unison toward the settlement. The overwhelming sight filled Kaya with a rare sense of doubt and fear. Could they truly hold against such numbers when they're not fully recovered?
When the enemy stopped 25 meters away, their formation split, making way for a single figure. A man with black mop top hair, blank eyes, and a mage’s robe stepped forward. His voice, eerily disembodied, echoed across the battlefield.
"Surrender or die painfully," he intoned, his mouth unmoving.
Before Kaya could respond, Robert, a lesser-known member of the Stormbringers, stepped forward.
"What happens if we surrender?" he asked.
The blank-eyed man replied, "You will receive the blessings of the Mother."
Intrigued, Robert pressed on. "What is this blessing? Will it make me stronger?"
"Yes," came the cryptic reply.
"The blessings of the Mother will make you stronger."
Without hesitation, Robert yelled, "I surrender!"
Kaya’s blood boiled, how dare he show an act of betrayal in front of her?!
When she's about to launched herself towards Robert, Gabby grabbed her arm. Kaya glared at her, fury blazing in her eyes, but Gabby’s expression was icy and emotionless.
"Stay in place," Gabby commanded, her voice brooking no argument.
Kaya, still seething, hesitated. Gabby slapped her. "Don’t let your emotions control you. This is a battlefield," she snapped.
Kaya, shocked, nodded slowly.
"I’m sorry," she said, taking a deep breath to regain her composure.
Turning her attention back to the blank-eyed man, Kaya asked with controlled anger,
"And what if we refuse to surrender?"
"Then you will die, technically." he replied, his tone ominous. "I will sever the connection between your consciousness and your body, trapping you within your own mind. You will be prisoners in your own flesh."
A shiver ran through the assembled Stormbringers. The threat was chilling. The blank-eyed man’s voice echoed once more, demanding a choice: surrender or face a fate worse than death.
"So what will it be, humans?"
