Chapter 29: Underestimated (1)

The Stormbringers moved with purpose and urgency, each member aware of the critical nature of their task. They spread out across the settlement, placing traps and fortifying defenses with a meticulous precision born from necessity. Tripwires were set, pitfalls dug, and explosive runes hidden beneath the soil. Every possible approach was covered, every blind spot accounted for.

The teams that had been out on missions were recalled, returning with grim expressions and a heightened sense of vigilance. Weapons were sharpened, armor polished, and every member ensured they were in the best possible condition for the imminent battle.

Rest was taken in shifts, with guards posted at all hours to keep watch for any sign of the approaching threat.

Six hours after the preparations were completed, the silence of the dense forest was broken by the appearance of the blank-eyed humans.

One by one, they emerged from the shadows, stepping out from between the trees fifty meters away from the settlement. Kaya stood at the forefront, her spear gripped tightly in her hand, her eyes narrowed as she surveyed the eerie, motionless figures. She raised her voice, commanding her people to prepare for combat.

"Get ready!" she shouted, her voice cutting through the tension. The Stormbringers snapped into their battle positions, weapons drawn and eyes focused on the silent threat before them.

But as they stood poised for action, the blank eyed humans did nothing. They merely stared with their vacant gazes, standing side by side without making a move. The sight was unnerving, a silent wall of inhumanity that seemed to be waiting for something.

Kaya and Gabby stood near the edge of the settlement, where the forest loomed ominously close, the silence heavy with anticipation.

Before Kaya began to address the weird behavior displayed by the blank eyed humans, she could see the worry etched on Gabby’s face, a stark contrast to her usual cheerful demeanor.

She then looked at Gabby, her red hair catching the light of the gentle moonlight. Her fierce amber eyes, however, were clouded with concern.

"Gabby," she began, her voice softer than usual, "what's going on? You seem more anxious than usual, is it because of the blank eyed humans?"

Gabby sighed, running a hand through her hair in a frustrated gesture. "Yes Kaya, it’s these blank-eyed humans. They’re not behaving as they should. They’re just standing there, and it doesn’t make sense."

Kaya nodded, her gaze shifting to the motionless figures at the forest's edge. "I know. It’s unnerving. But we've prepared for this. We’ve set traps, fortified our defenses. We’re ready."

Gabby shook her head, her worry deepening. "No, Kaya. It’s not just about being ready. There’s something wrong, something we’re not seeing. They should be attacking us mindlessly, but they’re just standing there, watching us."

Kaya frowned, considering Gabby's words. "You think there's something more to this? A strategy we're not aware of?"

Gabby nodded, her eyes reflecting a mix of determination and uneasiness.

"Yes. And it makes me think we should be prepared to run, to have an escape plan if things go south."

Kaya’s eyes widened in shock and a touch of anger.

"Run? Do you really think we can’t defend the settlement after everything we've done?"

Gabby stepped closer, her expression earnest.

"Kaya, listen to me. I know it sounds cowardly, but it’s not. It’s about survival. If things go wrong, we can't afford to be sitting ducks. We need a contingency plan."

Kaya’s jaw tightened, her pride and sense of duty clashing with the cold logic of Gabby’s argument.

"Do you really believe we’ll fail?"

Gabby looked directly into Kaya’s eyes, her voice firm. "Probably, yes. That's why we should be ready to run. I want you to be safe, Kaya. You’re the only family I have left in this world. My one and only sister."

Kaya felt a lump form in her throat at Gabby's words.

"I understand, Gabby. I really do. But running... it feels like giving up, we're not even fighting yet. How can i try to plan on saving my own skin when all of strombringers fighting with their life on the line?"

Gabby’s expression softened, but her resolve remained. She reached out and placed a hand on Kaya's shoulder, squeezing it gently.

"It's not giving up, Kaya. It’s being smart. It’s ensuring we live to fight another day. If need to, I’ll even knock you out and drag you away to safety myself. As for the others, just let their fate decide whether they'll live or not."

From behind the already assembled group, more blank-eyed humans began to emerge. Their numbers swelled rapidly, from five to ten, then to twenty, fifty, and finally over a hundred. They moved in a coordinated march, forming a solid line at the edge of the forest.

The Stormbringers' eyes widened in shock, faces paling as they took in the overwhelming numbers. Despite their increasing presence, the blank-eyed humans remained motionless, their silence and stillness only adding to the tension.

The sight of the growing horde filled the Stormbringers with dread. Even the most skilled scouts could not determine the exact number due to the dense trees obscuring parts of the view. The sheer scale of the enemy was daunting, their silent vigil sending chills down the spines of the defenders.

Gabby tightened her grip on Kaya’s shoulder. "Kaya, please. Promise me you’ll think about it."

Kaya nodded slowly, her eyes never leaving the growing threat. "Alright, Gabby. I promise." Gabby squeezed her shoulder one last time before letting go.

After she's done talking with Gabby, Kaya turned her head to her people, sensing the rising panic among them, she stepped forward with a determined stride, her spear crackling with residual electricity.

Her fiery red hair whipped around her face, and her amber eyes blazed with an intensity that seemed to light up the night. She raised her spear high, the weapon shimmering with a faint blue glow, and shouted,

"DO NOT FALTER!"

Her voice cut through the anxious murmurs like a blade, reverberating through the air and demanding attention.

"How can you lose hope before the battle has even begun?" Kaya’s voice was powerful, each word infused with an unyielding resolve that reached into the hearts of her comrades.

"WHERE IS YOUR FIGHTING SPIRIT?!"

Her words acted like a balm, soothing the raw nerves of the Stormbringers. Faces that had been twisted with fear and doubt began to shift, a glimmer of determination returning to their eyes. They saw their leader standing tall, a beacon of strength and courage, and they drew from her unwavering resolve.

"Remember why we fight!" Kaya continued, her voice carrying across the clearing.

"We fight for our fallen comrades, for our home, and for our future! These blank eyed humans may outnumber us, but they do not outmatch our spirit or our will to survive!"

The Stormbringers straightened, gripping their weapons with renewed vigor. Kaya’s words ignited a spark within them, a reminder of what they were fighting for and why they couldn’t afford to give in to fear. They believed in her, in the strength she embodied, and it gave them the courage to stand their ground.

Kaya’s heart pounded in her chest, the weight of leadership heavy on her shoulders. She could feel the eyes of her people on her, their hopes and fears resting on her every word. Despite the pressure, she refused to show any sign of doubt. She had to be the pillar of strength her people needed, no matter the odds.

The tension remained palpable, the air thick with anticipation. The blank eyed humans stood in eerie silence, their numbers growing with each passing moment. They outnumbered the Stormbringers more than two to one, and the uncertainty of their intentions gnawed at the nerves of the defenders.

Kaya’s gaze swept over her people, noting the fear still lingering in some eyes. She knew they were on the edge, and any slip could send them spiraling into panic. She took a deep breath, channeling every ounce of her strength and determination into her next words.

"We are Stormbringers!" she bellowed, her voice carrying the weight of unbreakable resolve.

"We do not bow to fear! We do not cower before the unknown! We face our enemies head-on, with courage and unity! Today, we stand together, and we will fight until our last breath if we must!"

The Stormbringers responded with a roar of approval, their spirits lifted by Kaya’s unwavering conviction. They readied their weapons, their stances firm and resolute. Kaya’s presence infused them with the belief that they could overcome any challenge, no matter how daunting.

"Stormbringers!" Kaya shouted once more, her voice a rallying cry that cut through the silence.

"PREPARE FOR BATTLE!!"

As her words echoed in the still air, the Stormbringers moved into position, their movements precise and disciplined. They were ready, their hearts steeled for the fight ahead.

Kaya stood at the forefront, her spear crackling with energy, a symbol of their unwavering resolve.
