Chapter 5: A new friend

After the first demonstration finished, there were some other battles with second and third year students but were nowhere as impressive as the first one. To bring the demonstration to a close, two teachers faced off in a 1v1 battle between Typhlosion and Incineroar, it was an eye-opening experience seeing two top tier pokemon going against each other, with the battle ending in a win for a very exhausted Typhlosion.

With the demonstration over, the sun was already setting on the horizon and we were sent to our dorms. As the Pokemon Battle Academy is a boarding school due to its location in a small archipelago somewhere near Kanto, each student is given a single room for their stay.

The room is small but comfortable enough for its given purpose, sleeping. I lie on the bed while checking my schedule on my new pokedex. Tomorrow, we have two classes, Pokemon Training 101 and Pokemon Battling 101, which we have again on Friday four days later. Tuesdays and Thursdays we have Physical Conditioning, and Pokemon Care 101 on Wednesday.

Soon after I fall asleep while thinking of my future as a pokemon trainer, in dreams I see myself commanding my team and winning battles.

I wake up early in the morning, with enough time to prepare myself for the day, I go to the school cafeteria after taking a shower.

“Hey there buddy!”, Flavio joins me on the way, he was waiting for me by the entrance of the dorms, “are you ready for class?”

“Not yet, I need to fill my stomach first”.

“Of course, I didn’t see you grab dinner last night”, right, I fell asleep before grabbing dinner, I’m starving now. Flavio tries to keep the conversation going but notices my lack of participation due to hunger, which doesn’t stop him from pointing out the girls he thinks are cute on the way to the cafeteria.

Once there, I wolf down as much food as possible, getting other students to gawk at me. For the first time, Flavio seems slightly embarrassed to be by my side, apparently, I’m not helping him look cool.

Flavio is taken aback as a tall, brown-skinned girl with a very imposing presence asks, "Excuse me, is this seat taken?"

While munching on food I pause for a second to tell her to take a seat, which she promptly does.

“I heard you two are legacies”, she says as a matter of fact, “So am I”.

“You are the sister of Gregory Walker, aren’t you?”, by the tone of Flavio voice I think he is talking about someone important.

“The name is Melody Walker, and yes, I’m the Alola Professional League Champion’s little sister”, she sounds proud of her brother, “And you are Flavio Rios, son of Eugenio Rios, one of the most famous researchers of the region”.

At this point I have no idea who they are talking about, apparently, they are both from Alola and their families are well known over there, “I have no idea who you guys are talking about, but feel free to join our little group of pariahs”.

“What?!”, they both shout in unison and then look at each other, then Flavio speaks, “Not knowing my father I understand, but Gregory Walker is currently one of the strongest trainers in the world”.

“I’m from a small village in Johto, my family lives in the middle of nowhere, at most I follow the Johto Professional League, besides, my mother isn’t very fond of me becoming a trainer, so I was kept away from the Pokemon Battling scene for a long time”.

I’m starting to realize I might have experienced a very different childhood than most kids in the academy. They stare at me with dumbfounded looks before Melody decides to ask a question, “I thought being a legacy meant your parents must be involved in the pokemon training world somehow, what do your parents do?”

“My mother is just your regular housewife, and my father was a pokemon trainer”.

“I’m sorry”, Melody says with an awkward look on her face, shared by Flavio next to me, as the mood drops she decides to change the subject, “By the way, I don’t know your name”.

“Gabriel Santos, Gabe for my friends”, I answer while smiling, then I notice Flavio’s expression changing as he seems to have figured out something, “what?”, I ask while staring at him.

“Are your parents Javier and Maria Santos?”, he asks in a surprisingly low voice while looking around the cafeteria.

That’s surprising, how does he know the name of my parents?
