After leaving the cafeteria, Teddy reluctantly followed me while we walked towards the Pokemon Center.
“Dude, it looks like people are really underestimating Teddy, most people want to challenge you”, explains Flavio after rejoining our group, he left to talk to some other classmates for a moment, “Even I would be tempted to if I didn’t know who your mother is, her Ursaring was a real monster”.
Apparently, Ursaluna isn’t public knowledge, my mom evolved her Ursaring once she got back to the village and stopped appearing in public events.
“I get it, Teddy here doesn’t look like much of a battler”, and he has the gall to look offended at me, “hey, you were the one gorging yourself with food and embarrassing us with Irene”, he looks away while muttering his name.
“I’m tempted to try going against your Teddy”, says Melody, “what level is he?”.
“He us just level twelve”, I answer quickly and notice the shocked expression on my friends faces, What?”
“Bro, average level should be around seven or eight for new students”, Flavio explains, “Most of us students aren’t allowed to battle until we get to the academy”.
“What levels are your companions?”, I ask while looking at Koa and Meli next to their trainers.
“Meli is level nine, and we have trained a little with my brother”, Melody says.
“Me and Koa just practiced cool looking moves which is why he is just level seven”, adds Flavio.
“Well, my village had sort of a Sentret problem and my mom would task us with scaring them away”, I explain, “which is why we have some experience in battle, besides Teddy’s mom tutored him with a couple of moves”.
“Meli too received tutoring with some of her moves”, says Melody.
“So I’m the less prepared one of the group”, Flavio sighs, “I should choose my challenges carefully”.
“We could do a practice battle with no points on the line, it could help you guys improve before you find people to challenge”.
Both Melody and Flavio nod at my idea, deciding to battle after getting the full analysis from Instructor Joy.
When we reach the Pokemon Center, the place has some second and third years walking around with graduates and some Chansey helping them. Instructor Joy is walking around while keeping watch over everything going on in the lobby.

“Good morning Instructor Joy”, Flavio greets her, with Melody and I doing the same a second later.
She looks at us and our pokemon and smiles, “I don’t think your group is in need of healing yet”.
Flavio hesitates but ends up being the voice of our group, “we were told to ask for a full analysis of our pokemon”.
Instructor Joy shakes her head, “quite the impatient first years we have here, we are going to do that on Wednesday’s class”, she sighs, “But I don’t mind having someone help you with that”.
Bringing out her pokedex she sends a voice message, “I need you in the lobby”.
A couple of minutes later, a smaller pink haired girl with a nurse uniform appears, she looks more like what you expect from a Nurse Joy, “This is Aline Joy, my niece and the one helping you get a full analysis of your pokemon, she is also a third year here in the academy and the one ranked fourth of her whole generation”, the instructor explains much to the embarrassment of the younger girl.
“Please, follow me”, Aline doesn’t acknowledge her aunt and just starts walking towards one of the doors, Instructor Joy just smiles and waves her hand signaling for us to leave.
The door leads us towards a corridor with multiple doors, until the pink haired girl stops in front of a different door and goes in, with us following after her. Inside, multiple machines all around the room which looks more like a battle arena.
“Which one of you is going first?”, asks the third year Aline with a polite smile on her face.
Both Flavio and Melody look at me and Teddy, wanting for the two of us to go first. I shrug, “That would be Teddy here”.
Aline looks at Teddy and brings out a pink pokeball from her dress which I didn’t even notice was there, “Nona, come out”.
A pink and cream colored pokemon with large blue eyes appears, an Audino, I think they are used instead of Chansey in some Pokemon Centers.
“Nona, I need you to prepare the Move Checker while I do a full physical of this Teddiursa”.
“Dino”, the pink pokemon nods and begins to walk around the room looking for something.
“And you little guy, come here”, says Nurse Aline while walking towards a big rectangular machine, “stand in there”, she points towards a red dot inside the machine.
Teddy looks at me and I nod my head, he walks in there.
“Is this your first time doing a full analysis?”, she asks and I nod my head, “This machine is a Body Scanner, it will give us the details of your Teddiursa stats”, Aline pauses, “I don’t think they would have explained stats to first years yet”, she looks at Teddy and says, “close your eyes dear”.
Just then, a flash of light suddenly appears inside the machine and lasts for a whole second, Aline walks to the computer next to the machine, “And ready, please check your pokedex, your Teddiursa current stats were added to his information”.
As I check my pokedex I find a new page added to his registry:
Physical Attack: Rank D
Special Attack: Rank E
Physical Defense: Rank E
Special Defense: Rank E
Speed: Rank E
What does this even mean?
Looking at my confused face, Aline Joy can’t help but start laughing, “I’m sorry, the reason you should follow along the course instead of asking to things like a full analysis earlier than planned in the curriculum is so that students don’t find themselves in this situation”.
“But I will give you a quick overview of the stats anyway, I think the stats themselves are quite obvious so I won’t go into detail. Each stat grows along with the pokemon as it levels up, but they can also be improved in some other ways such as training or the use of some special items”.
“About the ranks, think about it like this, every species of pokemon has their own baseline stats, what this machine does is get the information of your pokemon current stats and compare them with the baseline stats of pokemon from the same species, I won’t bore you with the numbers and calculations, but there is an elective course on the subject for third years”.
“The simple explanation is an average pokemon can reach a hundred points in their stats by the time they have reached their full potential, that would mean their stat is Rank S, if their stats are between eighty and ninety-nine that stat is Rank A, and so on every twenty points. Meaning, Rank E stat is anywhere between zero to nineteen points, and Rank D goes from twenty to thirty-nine”.
“So that you can make a proper comparison, pokemon below level twenty usually have Rank E stats, so your Teddiursa having his physical attack at Rank D is quite an achievement for his level. Just so you know, students are asked to train all the stats to rank D by the time a pokemon reaches level twenty and we have to start working towards Rank C when approaching level forty, for example, Nona, my Audino is level thirty one and she has her special defense at Rank C and I’m pretty sure her physical defense is about to reach that rank soon”.
I don’t think I understood any of that, besides Teddy’s physical attack being above average for his level.
“Anyways, you will learn the details in class”, she says while smiling.
