Chapter 27: Just talking with friends

After class, Flavio, Melody and I walked around until finding a place to sit for a while. Instructor Knight explanation today was quite informative, I had no idea.

“I already knew”, says Flavio, “my dad is a researcher after all, that’s why he got me an egg for my companion”.

“Me too”, speaks Melody, “My brother too got me an egg and explained some of it, not as detailed an explanation but I had an idea”.

Did my mom not know? She did get me an egg, I’m guessing she couldn’t bother to explain the reason, I would find out eventually when I came here.

“I didn’t know, but I got Teddy as an egg too”, I tell them, “By the way, I’ve told you about my Teddiursa, but I have no idea what your companions are”.

Flavio smirks and Melody remains silent.

“Come on guys, it isn’t fair if you know mine and I don’t know yours”.

“Dude, can’t you wait until tomorrow? We will all have our pokemon here”, Flavio speaks but I note the joking tone in his voice.

“Alright, enough with the jokes”, says Melody, “My brother got me an Alolan Vulpix, I named her Meli”, she glances at Flavio.

“Okay, okay, so mine is a fighter type you might not know in Johto”, he explains, “I could have gotten an egg from one of my dad’s pokemon but they are not exactly cool looking, to me at least, instead I am a big fan of the Super Pokemon Battle show, watching the Hawlucha there I couldn’t help but want one for myself, Hawlucha just look awesome in battle, I had to work really hard to convince my dad to get me an egg”, Flavio looks really excited and can’t seem to stop him to ask what is the Super Pokemon Battle Show, “His name is Koa”.

Apparently noticing my confusion, Melody decides to speak, “The Super Pokemon Battle Show is an Alolan television show where Fighting type pokemon battle each other, a lot of kids enjoy the show even though the battles are scripted”.

“Who cares if they are scripted when they look amazing? It’s all about the spectacle, the showmanship”, Flavio is clearly very much into those kinds of battles.

“I might watch it someday”, I say, Melody looks at me and shakes her head, while Flavio’s face lights up.

“Bro, I’m going to send you the links of some of the best battles, you are going to love the show”, Flavio takes out his pokedex and then remembers, we have no connection to the PokeNet here in the academy, “Right, I’m going to get my dad to send me physical copies so we can watch them”.

“Hey, did you notice who had to stay in the classroom?”, asks Melody trying to change the subject.

Then I think about the people who remained after class with Instructor Knight, there were nine of them, amongst them our acquaintance Alicia, I wonder which type of pokemon they have.

“I know Alicia has a Cleffa, I believe that species are fairy types”, says Flavio, I wonder how he gets enough time to talk to others.

“What about the others?”, I ask hoping my more socially adept friend has spoken to some of them.

“Uhm… besides Alicia, I have not talked to the others who stayed in the classroom”, he answers.

“I spoke to Ayumi the other day”, adds Melody, “the girl has a Psychic type, I’m not sure about which one”.

“I guess we will see tomorrow, everyone will have their companions with them after all”, I say, while asking myself why am I the only one who has not talked to anyone else, I never had trouble talking with the other kids my age in the village.

“Are you calling your family tonight or tomorrow?”, asks Flavio, “I’m supposed to talk with my dad tonight.

“I will call my parents tomorrow”, says Melody, “they go to bed early”.

“I’m calling my mom tonight, I have a lot of questions for her”, my mind goes towards the message my dad left and the things I’ve learned about them this week.

“That’s going to be an interesting conversation”, says Flavio, “I really have a hard time believing you have never watched Santos Adventure Time”.

“Yeah, the show was so popular it was aired in almost every region”, adds Melody, “I bet every other student here knows about the show”.

“It’s weird knowing that everyone else seems to know more about your own parents than yourself”, I sigh, “I wonder what my mom will say”.

The conversation seems to end there, and we decide to go back to the dorms.
