“Well, you will learn more about this later”, Aline says, “It’s time to check out Teddiursa’s moves”.
Teddy and I follow her to the center of the room, in there Audino has set what looks like some small cameras in each corner of the combat field, the pokemon is wearing some weird device that looks like a metallic bracer.
“Little one, we are going to use each one of your moves against Nona”, the nurse explains to us, “don’t worry about causing damage”.
She looks at me, “Give the orders one move at a time”.
To remember the moves, I look in the pokedex: Fling, Covet, Scratch, Baby-Doll Eyes, Lick, Fury Swipes, Counter, Play Rough.
“How is Teddy supposed to use Fling?”, I ask remembering he needs an object to throw for that move to work.
“Use this”, Aline throws a small iron ball to Teddy.
Teddy grabs the item and holds it, “Use Fling”, slowly dark energy gathers around his paw and he uses his whole body to throw the object towards Audino, the pink pokemon barely reacts and just receives the attack as if it was nothing.
With a tablet in her hands, Aline Joy checks the results of the test, “It seems your Teddiursa isn’t used to handling dark type energy, the preparation time was slow and the damage almost non-existent, I will send you the data once we have gone through all his moves, next”.
“Teddy, use Covet”, he does the move almost instantly, putting his left paw next to his face and cutely staring at Audino, who smiles at him, until Teddy quickly moves forward and using his right paw hits the pink pokemon, whose expression shows some pain for a second.
“As expected from a normal type move”, I hear as she speaks to herself and then turns to me, “Is this a move he uses often? It’s very well developed for his level”.
“Yeah, he likes to act cute”, I answer, remembering how Teddy likes to trick his opponents by using his appearance to make them lower their guard.

“I understand, next move please”.
After that we go with Scratch, Baby-Doll Eyes, Lick and Fury Swipes. Aline doesn’t tell me much besides asking some questions about Teddy’s preferences, while Audino doesn’t seem at all affected by our moves.
“Next move is Counter”, I explain.
Aline Joy thinks about it for a second, “I don’t think he can take a move from Nona, I will have to ask her to control her power, first have him use Counter”.
“You heard her Teddy, Counter”, he is surrounded by a slight orange glow.
“Nona, use Pound at ten percent of power”, Audino proceeds to slowly slap Teddy’s face, receiving some damage from her attack, but Nona too looks to have a pained expression, more than any other move we have used, “Nona, feel free to use Life Dew on both of you”, and the pink pokemon quickly summons a drop of water and throws it to Teddy and then herself, healing both from the damage.
“Counter is always a pain to deal with”, Aline says, “When properly mastered it can deal up to double the damage received by the pokemon, it’s even worse when used by a fighting type, luckily your Teddiursa is low level enough for Nona to handle and his mastery of the move isn’t great”.
“Do you know which species Teddy’s father is?”, she asks, “Counter should be an egg move, meaning something he got from his parents, and it could help him improve his mastery faster if you got his father to tutor him”.
I never asked mom about that, I know Ursaluna is his mother, but I have no idea about his dad, so I shake my head, “I will ask about it”.
“Does Teddy have any other move left? A regular Teddiursa his level should not have any other moves left”, she explains.
“He knows Play Rough, his mother has been helping him to learn how to use it”, I say.
“Last move then, go ahead and use it”, she says while looking at Nona.
“Okay Teddy, it’s time to use Play Rough”, on hearing my command Teddy’s whole body begins to show a pinkish white glow, which grows in intensity expanding around him as he moves forward towards Audino until they are both surrounded by it, slightly hiding them from our view, only leaving their silhouettes. When the move ends and they separate from each other, I can see some signs of Nona having received some hits and scratches on her body.
“That’s surprising, I can see how his mother has been tutoring him as Teddy has very good control over fairy type energy”, she looks at the tablet, “I see, Play Rough is his best trained move, let me show you”, and she taps the device, “You can check the data from the analysis on your pokedex now”.
Checking Teddy’s information, I find out something has changed on the display:
Teddiursa (Teddy)
Level: 12
Type: Normal
Gender: Male
Moves: Fling (Initial), Covet (Early), Scratch (Early), Baby-Doll Eyes (Early), Lick (Initial), Fury Swipes (Initial), Counter (Initial), Play Rough (Middle).
“Pokemon moves are measured by how far along is their mastery”, Aline explains, “Initial mastery means the pokemon hasn’t used the move enough which results in slow preparation time and diminished power output, those improve with each increase in mastery, which are: Early, Middle, Late, Peak, and Master”.
“I will leave the details for Instructor Knight’s class, but my suggestion is to focus on mastering Play Rough and Counter, because they will be more useful as Teddy increases in level, unlike his early level moves which are easily overshadowed by moves his species learn at higher levels. Maybe, try to keep improving Covet, as he needs to learn how to handle his own type energy”.
“That’s a full analysis, for first years at least”, she says, “there is a lot more to it but we don’t want to overwhelm you with information”. Then she turns towards my friends sitting by the entrance of the room, “Who is next?”
