Chapter 33: Against Koa

Chapter 33: Against Koa

“Bro, how many points do you have now?”, asks Flavio with Melody by his side having a curious look too.

Checking my profile with the pokedex I’m shocked by what I see:

Student ID: #202301004

Name: Gabriel Santos

Grade: First Year

Ranking: Unranked (63 pts)

Active Courses:

1. Pokemon Training 101: 11 pts

2. Pokemon Battling 101: 12 pts

3. Pokemon Care 101: 5 pts

4. Physical Conditioning 101: 10 pts

5. Battle Wins: 25 pts

Team members:

1. Teddiursa (Teddy) – Level 13

2. Totodile Egg – Level 0

Looks like Teddy leveled up with that battle, I wonder what level Bagon was.

“So, how many?”, Flavio’s words bring me out of my thoughts.

“Take a look for yourself”, I show them my pokedex and they stare in disbelief.

“I can’t believe it”, says Melody, “I barely have 39 points and that is with two extra points from Physical Conditioning and two from Battling Class”.

“Tell me, I’m at 35, which I suppose is the minimum if you participated in all the classes this week and didn’t earn any extra points”, Flavio seems to be sulking, “I even lost my battle with the normal types and didn’t get that extra point”.

“At least you are not going to be last place”, I say thinking of Jeremy, “That arrogant dude is 25 points behind everyone else now”.

“That is going to hurt for sure”, says Flavio, “but we still need to have our battles, have you checked who has challenged you through the pokedex? I’ve got nine people challenging me”.

“Oh… I haven’t checked that option yet”, I bring out my pokedex, “how about you Melody?”

“I have six challengers so far”, she answers.

Finding the Challenge option in the pokedex I see seventeen challengers, they are really underestimating Teddy. Amongst them is Irene’s, which I instantly accept, allowing us to message each other to setup our battle.

“There are seventeen challenges”, I say with a smile on my face, “Teddy, it seems we are really popular”, I laugh and Teddy follows along while rubbing his belly.

“For real? Man, if they had seen how you guys thrashed that dragon I think a lot of them would regret challenging you”, adds Flavio, “Meanwhile I will have to look for a good match for Koa”, he starts scrolling through his list of challengers, “I can only see their pokemon species here, Max and his Machop are on the list, a duel between fighting types could be cool”.

This story is posted elsewhere by the author. Help them out by reading the authentic version.

“There is a girl with a Shinx here, I want to check out how Teddy does against an electric type before battling Irene”, nothing wrong with some preparation before facing the little redhead.

“A kid named Colton has a kantoan Vulpix, it isn’t a good matchup for us but it could be fun”, Melody seems content with her choice.

“Nothing wrong with having fun with these matches”, I say, “besides, you guys still have to pick some other opponents, we need to have at least three battles”.

“How about we get some training before that?”, asks Flavio, “Teddy seems more experienced and could give some tips to Meli and Koa”.

Teddy perks up as he hears his name, for some reason he only acts lazy with me. Both Meli and Koa watched our previous battle and walk next to Teddy looking at him expectantly, he puffs out his chest and speaks to them, I think he is boasting.

“What moves do they know?”, I ask meanwhile.

“After the analysis nurse Aline sent the results to my pokedex, check it out”, Melody shows her screen to me with Meli’s moves and their current mastery.

Alolan Vulpix (Meli)

Level: 9

Type: Ice

Gender: Female

Moves: Powder Snow (Initial), Tail Whip (Initial), Disable (Initial), Ice Shard (Early), Baby-Doll Eyes (Initial), Moonblast (Initial).

She has only trained Ice Shard to early mastery, if she is going to battle a Kantoan Vulpix that’s not going to be good enough.

“Nurse Aline was surprised by the fairy type moves, apparently Meli got them from her father, who is my brother’s Sylveon”, so she inherited her moves from a Professional Champion’s pokemon, that should be very useful for her.

“Teddy can help her with Baby-Doll Eyes, it’s a useful move to know at our level”, I pause, “Maybe, having Disable could help you deal with fire type moves, a low level Vulpix most likely can only use Ember”.

“Great idea!”, Melody seems quite motivated to start training.

“How about you Flavio?”, I ask him.

“As I didn’t get Koa from my family, he only has the basic moves for his species”, Flavio explains as he shows us the screen of his pokedex, “here”.

Hawlucha (Koa)

Level: 7

Type: Fighting/Flying

Gender: Male

Moves: Tackle (Early), Hone Claws (Early), Wing Attack (Early).

I can see he has been focusing on training Koa’s moves, all three of them are at early mastery, but there isn’t enough variety for him to choose from.

“Wing Attack is a great move and it should give you type advantage against Machop, but yeah, your small move pool might make it hard for you to have many strategies to choose from”, it seems Koa is going to be a one trick Ponyta for a little while.

“How about a battle?”, Flavio asks, “Of course, you should go easy on us”.

I glance at Melody who also seems to want to battle against Teddy, “Let’s do it then”.

Seeing as we are still in the Battle Center’s field, we get into our positions, with Teddy entering the arena to face Koa. Flavio and his pokemon stand on the other side of the field, he seems to be encouraging his partner.

“Melody, you should be the referee this time”, the graduate student left once my battle against Jeremy ended, they are only there for official battles registered in the lobby.

“It’s a 1v1 battle until one of the two surrender or faint, begin!”, she shouts while looking like she is having fun doing the referee part.

“Koa, let’s show them our style”, shouts Flavio and his pokemon instantly begins to jump, with his claws extending and glowing red, he spins around in midair and lands in a stylish way with the glow from his claws expanding all around his body.

“Teddy, prepare a Counter”, we should setup our move first before Koa gets closer.

“Koa, Wing Attack”, as expected, his limited move selection makes it very predictable.

I watch as Koa’s wings start glowing white and he flies slowly towards Teddy, giving us enough time to prepare our next move, “Baby-Doll Eyes into Play Rough”.

As the flying type gets closer, Teddy’s eyes glow pink and makes his opponent slow down before hitting him with his wings, as my partner receives some damage so does his opponent, then he lifts his paws and grabs Koa’s wing while both pokemon get surrounded by a pinkish aura, thanks to their silhouettes I can see Teddy hitting Koa against the floor and follow it up with some scratches. By the time Play Rough is over, Koa is on the floor unconscious.

“Hey, you didn’t at all go easy on us”, says Flavio while returning Koa to his pokeball.

“I’m sorry, Teddy gets too excited when in battle and can’t seem to control his strength”, I say slightly embarrassed while not mentioning I completely forgot about it.

“It’s alright”, he glances at Teddy, “but you should have him checked out, two battles in a row might have been tough on the little guy”.

I see Teddy sprawled on the floor, he looks exhausted, I walk to him, “good job buddy, let’s get you to the Pokemon Center”, he smiles as I return him to his pokeball.

“Sorry Mel”, I say, “We can have our battle later”.

“I wouldn’t have it otherwise”, she smirks, “We have to beat you fair and square”.
