9. Was it a Day, or a Year

Once I left the guy at the entrance to the library, I decided to go straight to the bathroom. Not because I needed to go, but because I wanted to change how I looked, but, it would be hard to do that without extra clothes.

As I was thinking about outfits, in the stall, a window similar to my character window, and another window appeared in front of it.

'Here is my actual gift to you. A traveler, like yourself will need to blend in a lot. I know you will find this when you need it. Come by and say 'hello' again anytime, I get bored. -Patty'

I closed the window that looked like it just fell out of windows 97. And saw this window labeled as Outfits. There we're multiple tabs down the side, and multiple options on each tab, as well as three outfits I could save, for each tab on the side, and the seven tabs across the top each labeled as a separate closet.

Honestly, it felt like I was playing a fashion game playing dress up, but if I clicked 'apply' it would be me becoming the doll.

The first thing I did was find the 'closet' my current outfit was in, and clicked 'put away.' I was now sitting there in the buff, but I doubt that would last long. I selected the second closet, then the 'daily wear' tab, and found comfortable looking undergarments, and clicked apply to each, leaving them plain and white. I then found furry boots, wiped off my feet, then applied them, followed by knee high thick socks. I found a pair of black jeans labeled as insulated, shifted the color to dark blue, and applied them. I then quickly chose a simple tee shirt, and a jacket that looked fleece lined.

I then added a pair of pearl studs to each ear, and a grey fleece beanie. Once clicking apply, I stepped out of the stall. I then looked at the makeup options, and gave myself a bit less natural color pallet. And then left.

The guard who escorted me here was still outside the door when I walked outside. He didn't even recognize me as I walked within a couple feet of him.

As soon as I was by him, I switched my character to preset 4, and kept walking. I stuck my hands in my pocket, having forgotten gloves, and felt a piece of paper in my pocket. I pulled it out and read it.

'Thanks for telling them about the reactors, I am giving you money on your watch, it can only be used here. Pin-code is 1984'

I laugh at reading the pin-code, and decide to get some food. Walking into a mom & pop next to the library, I smelled grilled chicken. My stomach growled. I sat at a table, and took a peek at the TV hanging in the corner, it was a scene of me explaining the problem with the reactor. But for some reason, the anchor just kept replaying me saying it would cost a lot of concrete, lead, and lives to slow.

Taken from Royal Road, this narrative should be reported if found on Amazon.

I was glad I changed to the preset claiming I was 23. My ident also showed a different number than earlier.

I ordered some chicken soup, and what the place called a freedom salad. Crushed Macadamia nuts, blueberries, strawberries, feta cheese with romaine lettuce, a chicken breast sliced into strips on top, and a drizzle of an olive oil salad dressing. I was in heaven. By the time I had finished the salad, I was crying. The waitress came over to comfort me. And asked what was wrong. This was my wife's favorite salad, and this was the first time I had had it in 19 years.

I lied and said it tasted like my mom's did, and she has been gone. The cook, hearing this, brought me another one in a to-go container, while I calmed myself with the soup.

When I went to pay, another woman yelled that she had already covered it, and to come back anytime.

The weekend is almost over back home. But here, it's been almost five decades. I haven't aged a day. I did manage to learn a lot.

The old mom & pop next to the library grew to a bigger business, and I still eat there once in a while.

I managed to learn more about the character window, and turned off the 'prone to emotional outbursts' option on preset 4. And the 'stoic' option on preset 2, the one I use at home, aside from myself.

I ended up releasing a series of papers on quantum physics, and learning quite a bit too, but I don't know if I want to spend another weekend here.

I did also discover something I didn't want to. Although I didn't age over these years here, my body functions normally. The lunar cycle isn't something I want to experience, but I did.

I walked into a hospital, found the restroom, and corrected my appearance back to what I had when I came here, and moved back home.

I walked into the guest room, and it already looked like a teen girl lived here. I took my earnings out, and put them in the jewelry box Tabby put in here. I then took my jacket off, and hung it up.

"You're home." She says as she hugs me. "What's wrong?" She realized instantly.

"It has been a long weekend. Time was different there, so I stayed to learn as much as I could."

"How much different?" She asked, she asked a second time when I tried not to answer.

"A year was just under an hour here." I confided. She hugged me again, and then pushed me back, and started looking over my body.

"You look amazing for nearly sixty-five."

"This isn't the appearance I used." I switched to 4. "This one is."

"Again, you look amazing."

"The age didn't go up," I said as I switched back. "Everything worked normally, but the body didn't change."

I saw a velvet green cloud appear behind Tabby, and I pulled her away from it.

"Patty, what are you doing?"

Patty becomes solid, and looks sad.

"I got in trouble for helping you too much."

"Dad. Who is this?" Tabby is obviously scared.

"She is in charge of the place I was."

"I lost my authority there. The one in charge here said you had a dilemma, and I could help you by playing mortal for a few years." She then transforms into the 39 year old me.

"Can I touch you?"

"Sure, Tabby." I hear my voice from the person who just came here.

I hear a knock on the door, and look at the wall clock; it's nine thirty at night.

I watch Patty, as me, open the door.

"Hi, I am Carol from Division of Family Services. I am here to do a surprise inspection, and check the welfare of Sierra Korvall."

I didn't think they would stop by on a Sunday night, or only four days after notifying them.
