"I'm gonna call the cops before I let you in." Patty says to the woman who is reaching for the door.
"That's not necessary. I'll be a minute, and gone." She tried to pull open the storm door, and I watched a puff of green smoke lock it.
"I did not make a request, Carol. You are here, late at night, I've never met you before, and both my daughters are in this house. You will wait, or you will leave."
The woman huffed, then said she would wait. Patty closed the door,
I picked up the house phone, dialed the number for the non-emergency line, and handed the phone over.
"Yes, can I get an officer at my address, I have someone saying they are here from DFS, but it's an odd time. I don't want to let them in without an officer here.. Yeah, they are waiting on the porch." With that the phone was hung back up.
"How did you know I hadn't met her?"
"Your Dimension's administrator let me know everything, even his screw-up. So I am now you. While you get to be who you were meant to be."
"What do you mean?" Tabby asked before I could.
"I'll explain once she leaves. But the soul in there, right now" Patty pointed to me. "Is the one that's supposed to be there, and your sweet sixteen should be Groundhogs Day."
"So I was supposed to die?" I ask.
"No, you were never supposed to be Jesse in the first place. But things happened, and now we are here. Let's deal with that, after we deal with this."
The red and blue lights flashed for a second, letting us know they arrived. Patty opened the main door, and Carol was still standing there with a thick book, and a clip board in her arms, trying to look official.
"They are here now, let's get this over with." Carol said as she reached for the handle again.
"You will wait, until I am satisfied." I heard from the doorway.
"Evening, Mr. Korvall. What seems to be the problem." The officer said, ignoring Carol.
This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.
"This person showed up, telling me I have to let her in my house, at nine thirty at night. I have both my daughters in right now, it's almost bedtime, and I don't know her from Eve."
I saw the officer nod, then turn to Carol. Before he could say anything, Carol began loudly proclaiming she was there for an inspection.
"Carol, we've talked about this before. Go home." The officer said. Patty seemed satisfied, and spoke over Carol's squawking.
"Sir, if she, and her car, aren't off my property, before I shut the porch light off in five minutes, I want her trespassed." And the door was closed, Patty made a show of watching the clock on the wall.
Four minutes, and thirty seconds later, Carol was in her car, and aggressively leaving.
The officer knocked on the door, and Patty let him in the house.
"This won't help you get custody Mr. Korvall. Running her off, will make her write some nasty things in her report."
I notice his body cam is still on.
"I'm not the one asking for custody. My daughter is. Her house is on the next street over. So let her say what she wants, the house she should be inspecting is that one. Anyway, Sierra, take him to your room, and then show him the cupboards."
I nod, and motion the officer to follow me. Once in my room the officer starts asking expected questions. Some intrusive, but all expected. And then he gets to the one I knew he would finish with.
"So if there isn't any abuse, or neglect, why is your sister filing for custody?"
"Joint custody. Are you a parent?" He shook his head no, "I'm not either. But even I know dad is worried about me. He has been working longer hours; leaving me by myself more, and more. But he's a single dad. Some doctors won't even talk to him about my medical stuff, just because he's not my mom. What if I get hurt here, and he can't get to the hospital in time to sign forms? Its why they are doing this. It doesn't help that I already have my diploma, and am taking college courses from home. Want to see the cupboards?" He leads me back to my own kitchen.
After showing him our food stocks, I write down the Email address Tabby and I made, and ask him to send me the body cam footage. He says he will, and leaves.
"Okay, now why did you say I wasn't supposed to be Jesse?" I stare at the being in front of me.
"Your soul was supposed to be born as Sierra Marie in the first place. But the guy in charge over here got you one generation off." Those cold blue eyes stare into me. "Did you not even question why all the other preset bodies are female?"
"No." I answer honestly
"And you probably didn't even question why that window was closed so fast when you curiously hit the button for this body? Or why the age was perfect to be Tabitha's younger sister. Or how about all the paperwork this world requires falling into your lap, for instance you being home schooled, or records of you being here for years instead of just appearing like you did. Yeah, this administrator screwed up; but he is also trying to make it up to you."
"What about you?" Tabby asked.
"I screwed up too, but my punishment is basically a vacation. I am not allowed to be an administrator for about sixty of your years. So I am going to help you out, and lighten some of the load."
"There isn't much of a load."
"Sierra, you just spent fifty years helping my dimension. And you did that in a weekend. You need a break from there as well. Which is why you were banned from there for one of your years."
