14. Watchful eyes

14. Watchful eyes

I heard someone moving in Jessie's room, and immediately got mad. We had three break-ins in the last two weeks from people trying to see where she stayed. Everyone knew she was taken to Norfolk after the announcement.

Before I could check on the room, there was a knock on the door, so I answered it.

"Good, it's you. Someone is in Jessie's room." I tell Alicia.

"Good, it's probably her." She tells me.

"But she is in Norfolk." I answer back.

"Who says I'm in Norfolk?" I hear Jessie ask from behind. I swing around, and am face to face with those cold blue eyes I'll never forget. The platinum silver hair under an MSU grey beanie looked good on her. She was wearing a mock turtleneck, with a large gold plated necklace, but the makeup around her eyes made the ensemble look natural. Before I could take it all in, I jumped at her and gave her a big hug.

"I know why you didn't tell me, but I've missed you over the last two weeks." I whisper to her.

"Its been longer than two weeks for me." She whispers back, then pushes me away. "Do you want to walk with me and Alicia; or do you have to be somewhere?"

"Lets go." I say without hesitation, then grab my coat off the couch back.

"Is Paula in her office?" She asks Alicia.

"She was asked to be in her office to meet you, but none of us were told what for." Alicia tells her. I watch her nod as we get on the elevator like she is turning over things in her head. Suddenly her hand slams forward, and stops the door from closing.

"Stairs." Is all she says, and Alicia pulls both of us that direction. I am let go in the stairwell, and walk down at her slower pace. When I reach the first landing, I hear a loud crash next to me, followed by another below me. I look to Jessie, to see if she knows anything.

"That was the elevator carriage cable breaking, the counterweight pulled the carriage up, the first noise was the breaks engaged, the second was the counterweight cable breaking, and the weights hitting the bottom of the shaft."

"Stairs." I say in understanding

"Sometimes being an Oracle is great, other times it's a useless burden." I look at her, in surprise of her candor.

A few minutes later we walk into the physics building, and go to Doctor Stevens' office. Alicia doesn't even knock, just barges in.

"Oracle Korvall, I was not told to expect you in person." She smiles at her own lie.

"Good to see you. Beware of Trojans Bearing Gifts. Well I'm not a Trojan." She seems to have made a joke, but I don't get it. She pulls a completely white datacube out of her pocket.

"That's an Oracle's Datacube." Paula exclaims. They aren't allowed to leave Norfolk, unless an Oracle is the one who does it. "Why are you handing this to me?"

"Its everything I currently know about nuclear, particle, and quantum physics."

This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there.

"This is a copy of your data cube?" She asks with her voice at a higher pitch.

"No, that's my first Datacube. The copy is in the Public archives in Norfolk, I am donating the original to MSU, but I am giving it to you to use how you want." Alicia pulls out a form and gives it to Paula. The form basically says it belongs to the school, but the physics department will be responsible for its storage.

I am seeing an Oracle's Datacube, and it's not a copy.

"Doctor, can you verify the form?" Alicia is staring wide eyed at Jessie. I look over at the form, and see it a half a second after Dr. Stevens.

"High Oracle Jessie Lee Korvall's first Datacube." I read aloud. "What's a High Oracle?" I ask, my ignorance of the church shows.

"High Oracles are exceedingly rare in our history, only Avatars are more rare, with only four in recorded history; the last one being Avatar Methuselah in the year 6,000 Before Common Era." Dr. Stevens starts. "High Oracles have publicly allowed the Highest One to speak and act through them. Our most harsh forms of capitol punishment can only be handed down by either them or Avatars. Our last three Oracles did not have this honor." I see Alicia nod at the description.

"Well, that's all of the serious stuff out of the way." Jessie jokes, making it obvious she doesn't want us to treat her differently. We decide to leave and head for the Mall, just to walk around. I noticed a lot of double takes at Jessie, but the only thing out of the ordinary, would be her eyeliner.

"Why did you do your eyeliner like that?" I finally ask, between spoonfuls of an Oreo Blizzard.

"I forget, this world doesn't use iconography as much as mine." She says while looking completely forward. She then looks at me, her ice blue eyes seem to pierce through me as she continues.

"This design is half of a pair. The first one is the Eye of Ra, which is placed on the viewer's left, representing the feminine aspects of the sun; healing, restoration, and harmony. And this is called The Eye of Horus, and represents the feminine aspects of the moon, which are knowledge, health, and protection from evil." She pauses for a moment. "Alicia is aware, but I am not sure if you are, that My home-world isn't able to talk to our Highest One. Because of that, a lot of false religions were made by man. These symbols are from one of those false religions. One that nobody follows anymore. But we like the meaning of the symbol, so we wear, or paint it."

"So the black design you are wearing means Knowledge, Health, and Protection from evil?" I ask.

"Yeah, it's more of a feel-good thing, than something that actually works, but I thought this necklace would look good with it."

"Would you mind painting the other one on me?" She looks me in the eyes, mentions my brown color, then drags me to Sephora. She tries three different liquid eyeliners on my arm, and picks a bright metallic Gold.

She then paints it, with two workers watching how to do it.

"And there you go. You aren't really supposed to do both at the same time, as one is the moon, the other the sun, and when put together, they represent life, death, and the idea of spiritual rebirth. but it's your body, experiment, have fun. She turns me to look in the eyes, "and don't let anyone, tell you, you can't do something with your own body."

She then grabs a piece of paper, and her own eyeliner tube, and draws the symbols on the page next to each other. Still using the liquid eyeliner, gracefully writes Ra, and Horus over each one, then Sun and Moon below them.

"Why did you fill in the eye on Ra, bit left Horus empty?"

"Its the way they are usually drawn, or engraved. Its why Ra is usually done by people with dark eyes," she points to me, and then herself, "and Horus by those with light eyes. It gets fun when you wear contacts to change your eye colors, and wear them both at the same time." She smiles. The workers take the page she drew on, now with the multiple meanings written, and experiment at another table. In minutes, they are each wearing one of the symbols.

I see her eyes shift to a rich Violet for a couple seconds, followed by her giggling, and then her eyes shift back to their Ice blue.

"Why did your eyes shift back there?" I ask. She seems to get scared all of a sudden. She then gets real close, and whispers just loud enough for Alicia and I to hear.

"For some reason, that happens when your Highest One talks to me." She waits a second as a group passes. "They get much darker when I let him act through me, but I get really tired after, and need to eat."

"So what made you laugh?"

"He said he was glad I purposefully drew them in a way that a cult wouldn't be created, but rather a trend."

I was surprised to hear Highest One has such mundane conversations with her.

"So what does his voice sound like?" I ask.
