It took the rest of the day to complete construction of the water system. Without access to perfectly accurate measuring sticks it made construction projects a bit of a hassle. Some of the pipes and wooden beams just barely didn't fit together which required extra work that piled up and cost extra time. One thing that was pretty easy to make however was a level, so at least everything that was supposed to be flat was. It was nothing more than a flatted orb of glass with a bubble of air inside of it. I ended up needing to create more pipes as well in order to get the system setup the way I wanted it in the middle of Doovlin. The villagers of course were all very fascinated watching me work and I had groups of people observing me and asking questions throughout the day.
The entire setup was very basic in terms of plumbing, even perhaps to the people of such a low tech level. Some of the more architecturally inclined among them spent a great deal of time studying the blueprints I drew up for them. Writing those had also taken a few hours of the day and is why it took until sunset to complete the project. Because cheap paper wasn't really available right now and the problem of it degrading easily I had used stone to make them. Trying to make it easier on the humans the slates and writing had been done as tiny as I was able to pull off. They were still huge compared to a person though. It can't be helped.
When finished the project made me proud, something I had built with my own two hands and would certainly bring great benefits to many people. Deep in my heart was that glowing and warm feeling of accomplishment one gets when you finish something big or give a gift you worked hard on. It all started at the river with the waterwheel in the river supported by the pump house. Timber and stone were used for the construction with the hammers inside made of thinner stone. Lots of stone and wooden gears and ropes allowed it to move around. This pump pushed the water through a half mile of pipes along the ground and into the center of Doovlin where it ended at a large bathhouse. Of course it was separated between male and female sides for privacy. The showers had to be setup by the villagers with instructions by me as they were too tiny for me to create. There was also a large amounts of spigots on the sides of the wooden structure where people could get water on tap. Altogether an amazing system for this medieval world.
As the sun finished its decent behind the horizon the world was blanketed in deep darkness. The cold winds of autumn blew through the trees where I lay on my back, my gaze directed up at the dark sky that was filled with a million sparkling stars. After the day long project and subsequent fervorous worship from my followers I was actually drained for the first time since waking up here. Thankfully out here in the wilderness I could get some alone time and rest in preparation for the next day. My next plan was to create some boilers for some kind of heating system. Or should I dream hydraulics. That would require steel or just lots of iron though. One of the villagers had told me that the capital of this province the city Vinedenne had large amounts of ore that were supplied by nearby mines. I'll go there tomorrow.
My thoughts faded from prominence as they became muddled. There was just so much to think about and plan for, and the constant prayers from my worshipers made my mind a mess most of the time. Falling into my goddess zone I sat there at the map table. Around me were the heads up displays of my body status, mana amount, and worshiper list. Something that wasn't represented here was my memories. Perhaps I could create some kind of mind palace or organize my thoughts and memories. If I really am a goddess that can live for thousands of years then I'd need some way to easily find things. One of my greatest fears was that my brain capacity would be limited and unable to store infinite knowledge. With magic I'm sure such things can be cheated though.
With quick movements I stood up in my little room and turned around behind me. There I focused and imagined a door, a large one that was ornate and filled with little patterns like one would see at a fancy library. Lo and behold the door materialized before me. I had thought of it as a gateway to a massive archive space and now I needed to test if it worked. Slowly I reached out and pushed the doors apart, the space between them acting like a sort of portal.
Before me was a massive room about the size of a sports stadium, bookshelves and filing cabinets as far as the eye could see. There were ladders and stairs leading up to other levels and a otherworldly warm glow permeated the entire space. I was in awe and walked into the room slack jawed. Approaching the nearest bookshelf I saw it filled with books labeled with strange titles that seemed to blur as if poorly remembered. Opening the book I saw images and words about pies and what kinds of flavors they came in. This was actually a book of memories! I put the book back and pulled another off the shelf. This one was about driving a car on a freeway. All these books were my memories! My plan had worked!
As I went through them it became obvious they were unorganized. Whatever system had been used to create this place obviously wasn't optimal. I suppose my next order of business was to organize my memories for a permanent system. It could be by topic, by alphabetical order, or many other ways. For tonight and probably many nights to come this would be how I spent most of my "sleeping" time. I'm sure this space could be expanded in the future too. With a quick breath I slapped my cheeks and began the process of sorting out my memories.
----------
While deep in a book about the organization of political power structures an annoying chiming sound began piercing my concentration. After my initial jump of surprise I looked up from the pile of books I had around me on the floor.
"What the hell is that?"
With a thought I wondered if the heads up display from my main goddess zone could be brought up here. After merely thinking it a smaller screen appeared before me. On it was some kind of alert about creatures moving around my body. There were humans wandering around me in the forest. Some of my worshipers if these readings were true. This brought an annoyed sigh as I realized it was already sunup. I'd have to come back to this memory organizing tonight and it was annoying to leave it unfinished. I did have plans for today though: finding that delicious metal.
One quick sprint was all it took to get out of the mind palace and into the goddess zone. Then all I had to do was focus to wake myself up. The strange sensation came over me again as I woke up into my actual body. The sunlight was bright against my eyelids as I felt my limbs again.
"Mmph... What is it?" I asked sitting up groggily.
There was a female voice from below on the ground. Miya.
"Goddess we just wondered why you hadn't woken up yet is all." She said shyly. "It's been a while since you slept for more than a night and I was concerned you would be asleep for days again."
I opened my eyes and let them adjust to the morning light. "Its nice of you to worry Miya" I replied looking down at her below. "Nothing is wrong I was just erm- busy with something." She wouldn't understand what I was actually doing.
Thankfully Miya didn't question me further as she bowed. "Oh yes goddess. Sorry if we disturbed you."
The others were remaining silent, probably out of respect of my high priestess. I made sure to give them a look and a nod though. They responded with bow of their own and I felt the happiness radiate off them for my acknowledgment.
"I'm afraid I'll be out and about today Miya" I said looking down at her again. "There's supposed to be some mines off near the lord's city Vinedenne and I'm gunna needs lots of iron. I'll be going there to see about how I can get it."
"What do you need so much iron for goddess?" one of the men with Miya asked.
A smug smile came onto my face as I thought about the boilers and what they would mean for the villagers. This was going to be a surprise though.
This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.
"Oh nothing really" I responded. "Just another project I had in mind."
Carefully I stood up making sure the humans were nowhere near my feet as they thundered down into the dirt. The longer I stayed the more questions they would be asking and the less I'd be able to resist spilling the beans about my plans. That was something I just couldn't help sometimes, just gushing out my excitement about things.
"I'll be back soon, probably not more than a day or two." I said down to them at my feet.
"Be safe goddess!" Miya chimed up at me.
It was still bizarre to me, seeing people so tiny down next to my boots. Every move I made had to be planned to avoid accidentally stomping out someone who was barely as tall as my ankle. Even if this got annoying there was no way I could not do it so my only choice was to just keep trying to get used to it.
After closing my eyes I looked at the map and tapped my chin. Vinedenne was quite the distance away and even for me it would be hours of walking. There was that teleporting trick and I needed more practice with it. It seemed that I could open a portal to wherever my worshipers were as long as they were actively praying to me. Simple enough of a system to use and even exploit. There were a few people praying to me in the city right now and I looked until I found someone on the outskirts. I'm sure people would be happier if the two-hundred foot tall girl teleported outside the city rather than inside it.
There they were: a small girl praying that her favorite toy could be fixed. It seemed she was holding some doll that was broken. She was standing next to the gates of the city and if I positioned the portal correctly I could appear right outside the walls.
All of this took seconds for the people standing at my feet so when I opened my eyes and looked down at them they had no idea what I had just been doing.
"I thought you were leaving goddess?" Miya asked confused.
A giggle escaped me as I raised my arms up beside my head. "Oh! Yea I still am. I'll be teleporting over there." I then gave them a small wave. "Well see you!"
With that I dropped my hands to my side as a large glowing magic circle appeared above my head. It spread bigger until it could cover my shoulders and then dropped slowly over me starting with my head. As it lowered and my body passed through it Miya and the others saw me vanish into thin air. It was like a reverse printer. Meanwhile at the city I was appearing out of nowhere in the same fashion. There was plenty of shock and even fear from the population which didn't come as a surprise at all.
"Look out down there!" I said. "I'm just here for a business visit please don't be afraid."
As the portal reached my legs I was able to pull my left foot out of it and place it somewhere open on the ground. The area near the gate was just dirt and spare grass which was perfect for my massive boot to boom down at. Then as the portal finished up I did the same with my right foot. Now I stood outside the wall of the city Vinedenne, standing tall and adjusting my clothing as the city looked on.
Vinedenne was a large city for such a time period, probably had over a hundred thousand people living in it. The walls were tall and made of strong stone, though to me they were barely up to my knees. Yeah being this big was a pretty annoying inconvenience for everyone really. It made my status as goddess more solidified though!
The people of the smaller villages and that one town were already pretty used to seeing me walking around. These cityfolk were not used to me at all and the reaction of fear was understandable. There wasn't much I could really do about it besides be myself and allow my actions to quell their concerns. They would see me put my hands on my hips and look around on the ground for something.
A little girl's prayer had been the reason I was able to teleport outside the city and she was the subject of my search. After only a few moments of looking around I spotted her just inside the city walls. She was looking up at me in a mixture of abstract terror and disbelieving awe. Had she really summoned a goddess she thought? She was about the same age I looked, not older than nine years. Slowly I bent down over the wall towards her.
"Don't be afraid little one" I said as soothingly as possible. "I came to answer your prayer."
She and everyone around her were taken aback by this. The little girl took another several moments to recover from the crippling shock before she could even speak.
"Y-You heard me?" she stuttered.
I nodded and smiled warmly. "Mhm! Now show me this broken thing and I'll fix it for you. Does that sound ok?"
She gulped and lifted her doll up into the air above her head. It was a stuffed one that had been ripped down the middle with the stuffing coming out. As slowly and carefully as I could I crouched down over the wall and lowered my hand down closer to her. She flinched as my big finger got closer to her but bravely remained standing.
"You're a brave one. Whats your name?" I asked.
She squeaked a bit as she replied. "I-Iselia."
"What a cute name!" I said.
Keeping her talking was helping her stay calm as my finger finally touched her doll and her hands. With a thought I used some magic to fully repair the doll in an instant. Then just as slowly I withdrew my hand up over the wall and back to my side.
She opened her eyes as the shadow of my hand passed and the sunlight returned. With a gasp she looked at the restored toy and then looked up at me in the air over the wall.
"Thank you so much biggie Jenna!" she explained joyfully.
I just nodded. "You're welcome."
With the prayer answered it was now time to find the market and whoever managed the metal sales around here. Looking out over the city the market slash business district was easy enough to spot. I stood up again and waved my hand out in front of me.
"Now I'll be going to the business district. It'd be great if ya'll could clear the streets enough for me to walk over there. I'll of course be careful not to step on anyone. Now here I come!"
My announcement was enough to clear most of the streets as people rushed to get themselves and their horses out of the middle of the roads. My feet were bigger than a house and just finding places for me to step down on my walk to the commerce areas was difficult enough without it being a busy city. My first few steps were easy enough, though there was obviously some damage to the cobblestone streets as my boots crushed them. Oops... I hope they let goddess's off easy on property destruction.
"Thanks for working with me everyone" I said down to them. "I promise I won't be here long!"
Thankfully the citizens were cooperative enough that my footfalls never ended up stepping on more than a wooden cart full of cabbages. It was probably stranger from my perspective than it was for them. Just walking through this tiny scale city and having to be hyper aware of every inch my feet touch lest I damage property or worse people was just a surreal experience. I'm sure it was pretty wild for them too don't get me wrong. Having a little girl taller than the castle spires just stomp through your city probably wasn't on anyone's itinerary for today.
Once I was at the market and business area I stopped and planted my feet in sort of side streets so I could sort on stand there out of the way. Well as much as I could be. I then addressed the shocked and fearful people below.
"Hey I'm looking for whoever runs the iron and metal industry stuff here. Can anyone point me to where they are?"
There wasn't any answer to my inquiry. Not really surprising as most people were leaving the area as quickly as they could. I did get an answer though as a familiar figure appeared in my peripheral vision. This reminded me that I need to refrence my map slash radar more. Bringing it up in the back of my mind showed a human flying towards me from the castle. That old man wizard Ferherlyn. Actually I should have expected this, what with me showing up and walking through the city and all.
"Goddess Jenna" Ferherlyn said as she flew up in front of my face. "As much of an honor it is to have you visit our city I must-"
I raised my hand and cut him off. "Yes ok? I get it. Sorry for showing up unannounced and walking around the city." I then looked straight at him and the intensity of my focused gaze caused him to visibly jump. "I'm actually here on important business. I need iron. A lot of iron. Any hints where I can get some?"
Ferherlyn recovered from his momentary shock and cleared his throat, stroking his beard thoughtfully. "Well erm... Why a goddess needs a large supply of iron aside. I suppose you'd need to speak to the good people over at Watching Rolling Rocks. That's the major mining company that owns the largest supply."
"Great! Can you take me to them?" I replied quickly.
He seemed to be able to sense the excitement and impatience in my voice. His confusion and curiosity for what I was up to was overpowered by his urge to placate the massive and powerful magic being in front of him. Thus he was very coorperative.
"Of course Goddess Jenna" he said with a midair bow. "Though if it it pleases you could I bring the leader of the company to you? Perhaps in that field outside of the city walls?"
I followed as he pointed to a large open grassy field a short distance away from the city. It was a nice open area and seeing it made me look down at my feet. They were planted in two different streets and my boots were sinking down into the cobblestone. My left foot had actually bumped into one of the buildings and cracked were forming in it.
"Heh heh" I laughed nervously. "Of course. Sounds like a good idea to me. I'll meet you over there." Then trying to reassert control of the situation I lifted my left hand and wagged my finger at him. "Now don't take too long Mr Mage!"
Ferherlyn seemed to be very understanding of the situation and seemed to get the difficulties I was having while trying to be careful of the citizens.
"Of course great goddess" he said with another bow.
After that he turned and flew away down into the city. So leaving him to find this person I turned around and walked through the city towards the open space he had pointed out. There were a few more crunches underfoot as carts that had been left out in the street met their end underfoot but no one was hurt which was the important part to me. I hope no one hates me now.
