The day is warm and the sun is bright. I feel weird sleeping so much but its like I'm filling up a battery and then draining it with such little activity. After what probably is a day or two I find myself waking up into another dream. Well at this point I understand that its actually just my powers allowing me to witness the world around me even while sleeping. "Goddess Vision" as I like to call it.
The same radius of vision exists in this dream, thought it has seemed to expand at least to quadruple what it was when I first found it, almost two hundred feet! Some of the village dogs had also come up to me and barked at me quite a lot. After a short while they came up and sniffed me and deciding I was ok to exist on the outskirts of their village they left me alone after that. Various children also came up to my hands and touched my fingers, their parents immediately scolding them. The prayers of the villagers also come to me as voices. It seems I have quite a lot of worshipers now, almost the entire village I would guess. I'm not sure how I could answer these prayers but if I can learn how my powers work I might be able to answer some of them. Being a deity sure isn't easy.
During this dream I saw Miya walk up to me to pray to me because of course she would. I decided to try something and after she left I tried to follow her. Imagine my surprise when I was able to follow after Miya like a bird in the air. This allowed my vision to extend past the maximum range, thought it limited me to a much smaller range of about fifty feet directly surrounding Miya. I was still aware of the previous range and people moving about in it at the same time I was following Miya and the double vision made my brain hurt. I only got to try this following thing a couple times because of the mental pain. Maybe I could get used to it though.
As I lay there on the ground I saw the day pass into night, the town watch going up into their small tower and torches being lit around the village. Man their defenses are pitiful and I'm going to have to fix that at some point. I remember electricity and the total lack of it and plumbing also is a major drag. It would sure suck to live in this village as a person. Though I suppose they never know anything besides it. I sort of fade back into total unconsciousness again after that.
"Goddess" a man's voice said.
I slowly wake up, thought this time interestingly enough not into full wakefulness but into my goddess vision state. I see that beside me is a man who is standing behind two barrels. I wonder what this is about? I concentrate and find myself suddenly awake for real, the orange light of my eyelids all I can see. Thankfully I can wake myself up now at least.
I open my eyes and lift my head from the ground. "Mmph..."
Slowly I pull both my arms in underneath my chest and prop myself up, lifting myself up enough so I'm no longer laying on the ground. The man and the barrels are now far beneath my head and he looks up at me with clear fear on his face. In the distance I hear people calling that I'm awake in various degrees of excitement.
"Yes?" I ask plainly looking down at the man.
The man looks up at me and staggers back a few steps. "Well erm Goddess Jenna." he stumbles over his words. "The village would like to offer these to you. Its been over a day since you fell asleep."
I look down at the two barrels and cock my head to the side slightly. "Oh? What is it?"
He stumbles forward to the barrels. "H-Here let me open them up."
As I watch the man pulls the lid off the left barrel, dropping it to the ground and exposing the contents. Its absolutely packed with tons of tiny bumpy brown things. They come in all shapes and sizes and the scent of earth can be faintly smelled coming from them.
"Potatoes?" I ask straightening my head.
The man opens the other barrel up and as the lid pulls away I can see its filled with clear water. I see, its food and drink for me because they're worried I'm hungry. I'm not sure if they're doing this out of kindness or fear though, I can't possibly know what's going through their heads. The man steps back from the barrels again and looks down in a show of deference to me. I just lift one of my hands up and lower it again.
"Oh that's ok" I say. "I don't need to drink or eat but thanks anyway."
After I said this the man looks down in confusion at the open barrels and then up to my face above him. He might be worried I'm rejecting the gift so I quickly think of something to calm him down.
"I really do appreciate the offer little guy!" I tell him reassuringly. "Its just well- I don't need it. You should take them back to the village and use them to feed yourselves ok?"
The man nods and bows to me. "Yes goddess."
Well that was easy to deal with thank god. Hmm... I'm thanking god again. I think I'm starting to remember something. My thoughts are interrupted though as I watch the man bend down and pick up the lids of the barrels to reapply them. I get an idea and close my eyes, trying to reenter the goddess vision. Amazingly I can! With my eyes closed I can focus and see the area around me like some kind of three dimensional map. The little man and the barrels are right next to me and I can see a child walking with their mother a short distance away.
"Awesome!" I exclaim in excitement.
My sudden outburst causes the man to nearly jump out of his skin. I might have given him a heart attack. Shrieks and shouts come from the village as the people react in alarm to the sudden loud voice. Chickens run around squawking and of course dogs begin barking.
I quickly push myself back and pull my legs in behind me. "Its ok everyone its ok!"
With a grunt I continue by pushing myself upright so I'm sitting on my legs. As I sit up I look across the village and see the chaos begin to calm down. The dogs will likely keep barking for a short while but at least I can see the people stop panicking. I really need to get it through my dumb head that my actions have consequences. Even the smallest things I do are a big deal to these villagers. Did I have to be so huge? I guess since I am I'll just have to deal with it and adapt.
A young man of about fifteen years runs out of the village towards me. I leave the man to reattach the barrel lids and move them away on his own, turning my body to face the village and this newcomer. At this point a few people had stopped to bow to me and pray to me. Yes yes I'm sure I can bring you true love and make your pimples go away. Geez how would I do either of those things? I hope they can be disappointed for a while before I get more abilities.
The tale has been stolen; if detected on Amazon, report the violation.
The young man comes to a half a short distance away from my knees. He didn't seem to be afraid of me as he was quite close. He didn't look anything special really, but for some reason he really wanted to talk to me. He held his hands to his mouth and really was shouting up at me.
"Yes hello. I can hear you just fine by the way." I say looking down and holding back a sigh. "Did you need something?"
He dropped his hands and suddenly seemed quite reserved, as if actually talking to me had stolen his bravery. "W-Well..." he replied. "Miya really wanted to talk to you again once you awoke. And um. Some important adults did too. Um. By the river."
A leadership pow-wow no doubt. It makes sense that after I showed up and took a nap at the edge of their village the leadership or what passed as it would want to have a chat with me. This was going to be a very serious conversation and having Miya there would only cause trouble.
I put my chin in my left hand and looked down at him. "Very well. Tell them to come meet me a short distance into the forest near this river right away. I don't want to wait very long."
The boy nodded and turned to run off again.
"Oh by the way" I added. "Tell Miya to stay home please? When she objects, and she will object, tell her this is a conversation she is too young to be at and I'll be disappointed in her if she shows up."
He nodded his affirmative as he ran off into the village. Whoever these leaders were I hoped the conversation would go over smoothly.
I slowly pushed myself upwards, only having the ground to help me get standing again. Once I was upright I lifted my arms and did a big stretch, yawning and letting out a little squeak like you do when you stretch. Everyone who was out and about looked at me as I did this and it was pretty embarrassing. I'd have to get used to so many eyes looking at me all the time. Thankfully the people then continued going about their day, albeit more cautiously then before I was awake. Yeah that's to be expected I suppose. They can't be one hundred percent sure they can trust me yet.
Now where was this river? They must want to meet me there because of the river's noise, hoping it will keep my voice from being heard in the village. It makes sense and honestly I prefer it that way right now as well. I'm probably never going to have totally private conversations again now. As I look around the forest I can see its edge in the far distance to the... South. Looking up at the sun I can remember basic directions. Mountains are north, plains are south, and therefore the river flows downhill which is to the south. I then close my eyes and focus my hearing, concentrating on trying to pick up any sounds of water. Bingo! I hear the sound of rushing water to the east of here. The river must not be very far away from the village then. It makes sense that it wouldn't be.
I clear my throat and then speak. "Ok everyone. I'm just going to go over to the river to have a chat with your village leadership." I was talking to the town in general and not to anyone specifically. "I'm not leaving forever so don't worry about me abandoning you or anything ok?"
That ought to relief any worry the villagers had. Me just getting up and walking away without a word would probably have caused panic of some level and I didn't want that. Now I was free to head over to this river and wait for the town leaders to show up. Some people waved to me and called out goodbyes while others didn't pay any attention to me at all. I didn't mind that.
Using my goddess vision and keen eyesight I slowly walked around the village in the cleared land near the treeline. I could see the effects my footsteps were having on the village but there wasn't much I could do about it really, they were going to have to figure out some kind of earthquake proofing for their construction. This is why I couldn't walk through the village itself, it would cause untold damage. Birds of course flew from the trees as I walked, scattering into the sky like tiny bugs.
"Ok. Made it around the village with no disasters. Good." I said to myself under my breath. "Now I just got to make it to the river."
Now that I was on the opposite side of the village I was next to some of the farmland. I could actually see the river past the trees now. There was a thin treeline separating it from the farmland maybe a mile away. The reason I couldn't see the river at first even from my height was of course because it was so far below the treeline that it was hidden, a thin line between the trees unobservant from any angel but directly above. Perspective is what that's called. From here I took a few dozen careful steps and was already there.
Some of the farmers were out in the fields and stopped to gawk at me looming above them into the sky. I lifted my hand and gave a shy wave and a sheepish smile before turning away. I have to keep telling myself this is all just as new to these people as it is to me. I slowly crouched down at pointed at one of the farmers, motioning him over with my index finger. After he was as close as his bravery would allow I whispered down to him.
"Hey farmer guy" I said quickly glancing around for eavesdroppers. "What kind of harvest yield do you guys normally get around here?"
The man was caught off guard by my question and answered with a slight stammer in his voice. "W-Well g-goddess. Its not m-much but its enough to feed the t-town in winter."
"Alongside hunting I presume" I finished for him. "Great thanks."
As I stood back up again he held his weeding rake tightly and kept his head craned back. "Say g-goddess... You aren't some goddess of harvest here to help us are you?"
I cross my arms under my chest and let out a small sigh, looking down at him with a bit of a frown. "Not that I can tell. But I'm going to see what I can do about it regardless."
The farmer looked confused but hopeful and bowed his head to me. "T-Thank you goddess."
I uncrossed my arms and turned back towards the river. "Mhmm."
With that I left the farmer to his work and stepped over the strip of treeline between the farmland and the river. I was going to have to help these people increase their crop yields at some point. Thinking back to my old life I could remember massive metal machines that helped farmers till immense fields and grow unimaginable bounties. I'm pretty sure such things are too far in the future for these people, but even if I have to till the fields myself I will. Looking back at the village I could see that even this meager farmland was quite expansive for these villagers. The village itself looked so close to me, but I knew that for someone of human size it was at least a mile away from where I stood now. I didn't know if my responsibilities would remain in this village forever or if it would expand to others. All I knew now was that I needed to do my best for these people.
Turning back to the river I give it a better look over. Its a pretty wide river as far as they go, must be at least ten feet deep in the middle maybe even more. Very strong currents too I can see that from just how fast its moving. Its pretty calm near the shore though. The land around it was typical rocks and grass and sandy dirt. Nothing too special. Looking upriver I could see it twisted and turned through the forest heading back towards its origin point in the mountains. Looking downriver I saw it wind away into the plains far away.
I step over to the riverbank and crouch down, looking at myself in the reflection. I'm sure lots of fish could be found in here, and being glacier fed its as fresh as fresh could be. Hmm. I brush my fingers through my hair as I look at myself. Jenna the goddess. I still couldn't shake the feeling I'm forgetting about someone, a father of some kind. I hoped I could remember soon. My thoughts were interrupted however as I heard the sounds of hooves. Horsies!
After standing up I turned around towards the village again. There on the dirt road leading from the village to here was a group of three men and a woman riding on horses. One of them was the man who was in conversation with Miya before. The other two were Miya's father and another I didn't recognize. The woman was hidden behind the back of Miya's father so I couldn't see her face.
Looks like its time for a real talk" I said to myself once again under my breath. "Here goes nothing."
Trying to settle the butterflies in my stomach I slowly and careful sat down next to the river on the bank. It was like sitting on tiny gravel and grass, half pokey and half soft. Not really a problem for me, its not the river's fault my butt is so huge now.
The impact of my sitting did cause the horses a bit of alarm but they continued towards me after that with no problem. Once they were past the treeline the three men dismounted and tied their horses to trees. I then saw the woman was Miya. I told that guy to tell her to stay home! What was she doing here? Miya's father helped her down off the horse and they all said a few words among themselves before starting to walk over to me.
