Arc 1: New Goddess - Chapter 10

Miya walked away from the stable, still in a daze after what she had just experienced. The goddess she worshiped was not only nothing like she expected, but also nothing like she ever could have imagined. Goddess Jenna had seemed almost perfect in her kindness without a hint of violence, but now that she had seen the goddess get angry wondered what else she was capable of. Goddess Jenna seemed almost too human.

It had happened during a conversation near the river where her father and two of the town leadership had gone to question the goddess about her origins and intentions. From that conversation it was clear that Goddess Jenna planned only to help the village and its inhabitants, though her methods of doing so sounded so confusing and complicated. All the things the goddess spoke about seemed impossible and bizarre. Words that Miya had never heard before all coming in a rapid fire avalanche to overwhelm her mind. What was this goddess planning? Was trusting her a mistake from the beginning?

No it wasn't. Miya had thought about this on the horse ride back to the village. Yes the goddess got angry, but it was because Mr. Butterhorn had disrespected her. Honestly from what Miya knew about goddesses he was lucky to have not been smashed flat instantly. Goddess Jenna had shown great restraint with humans the entire time Miya had known her. If it was all some plan to get humans to drop their guard and destroy them it was hard to believe. Why would someone as powerful as a goddess need to trick anyone when she could just stomp them flat?

"Miya."

Her father's voice broke her out of her thoughts, causing her to jump in surprise. She stopped walking and whirled around to face him. Duncan was walking up to her, the horse they had ridden on now penned away.

"Yes father?" she asked.

Duncan walked up to her and put his hand on her right shoulder. "I know many a thing is going through your mind right now. You and I both have personal experiences with this goddess Jenna. Trusting her is the correct thing to do, I can feel it as well as you."

His voice was reassuring and helped calm Miya's racing thoughts. She nodded and reached up to place her hand on her father's.

"Thank you father" she said smiling. "All that strange stuff she talked about. I know its good somehow." She then looked down to the ground. "How do we convince the village of it?"

Duncan just pulled his daughter towards him and into a tight hug. "They'll all come around sooner than you think sweetheart. This goddess will prove it in no time I'm sure."

There was a booming quake that shook them both. The goddess was actually standing over the village right now and had just taken a step. They both looked up to see Jenna towering into the sky, taller than any tree they had ever seen. She was holding one hand to her chin and looking around the village as if studying it. It was clear that a goddess was much more intelligent than a human, but Miya still wondered what was going on inside Jenna's mind.

"Should I go to her?" Miya asked, looking up into her father's eyes.

Duncan released her from his embrace and nodded. "I suppose you should. She seems to treat you like a priestess of some kind, perhaps because you were the first to meet her. Having you around might keep her calm as well." He shook his head. "While I hate the idea of my daughter being so wrapped up in this all I have to agree with the others. Once the goddess walked away from that river I spoke about things I wish I never had to. Keeping the goddess from becoming angry is the top priority until we understand what's going on."

"What about my duties on the farm?" Miya asked.

"Don't worry about those" Duncan replied. "I'll speak to your mother about it later, but right now your duties are entirely focused on the goddess."

Miya nodded. "I understand father. I'll go to her now." She began backing away from him and gave her best smile. "Please be safe ok father?"

Duncan just smiled back at her. "Don't worry. I'll have plenty to do just worrying about you. Make sure the goddess knows you need to be back by dinnertime alright?"

"Yes father!" Miya said with a giggle in her voice.

Miya knew her father was trying to keep her spirits up as the task she had before her was one of unprecedented unknowns. It was a duty she would proudly accept however. She was the one who woke up this goddess, and if it was her fate to be her priestess she would do it with pride. So banishing doubts and fears from her mind she walked confidently towards where Jenna was standing.

It took less than a minute to arrive at Jenna's feet. It was hard to believe that something big enough to flatten two houses at once could be someone's foot. Each toe alone was enough to crush a full grown man with ease. Yet here stood Jenna, a towering girl who had an air of calm about her where one would expect someone to abuse their power. Especially considering Jenna had the appearance of a small child no older than eight. Miya wondered how a goddess could be so young and yet so obviously mature. Did goddesses get born as babies? The goddesses of old were adults she thought.

"Oh its you" came a booming voice from above. Jenna was looking down as Miya walked across the cleared land around the village.

Miya stopped walking and gulped. Jenna's face was impossible to read at times like this.

"Yes Goddess Jenna" Miya replied with a bow. "How can I be of service to you?"

Jenna dropped her hand from her chin and let out a hum through closed lips. "Hmmm. Actually there is something you could do that would help me out."

"What is it goddess?" Miya asked. A hundred thoughts raced through her mind as to what the request could be.

"I need you to collect some information for me" Jenna said. "That Jenson guy said his little company here produces materials for paper. I would like you to get me a blank book, a pen, and ink. Then have as much information about this village and the surrounding land written down in it." Jenna paused for a moment. "I'll have to have someone read it to me I suppose since it'll be so tiny. But I would like this book brought to me nonetheless." Jenna raised one of her hands. "I'm not talking instantly, I'm just saying I want this book in a few days or so."

"O-Of course goddess. I'll go get a book right away!" Miya said bowing deeper.

Jenna let out a humph and nodded. "Good! I appreciate it. I'll probably be taking a nap here shortly so don't mind me." She then waved her hand dismissively. "Run along now and stay safe ok? If anyone hurts you I'll punish them myself."

Miya simply nodded and turned to leave, quickly walking away from Jenna's feet and back into the village. She wasn't sure what a goddess wanted with a book, but if Jenna made a request like this it had to be followed. It seemed she was also being given divine protection to complete this task and she couldn't help feeling a rush of excitement filling her heart. She was going to be like one of those priestesses she heard tales from travelers about that served at the temples. Speaking to the rulers of heaven and doing their holy tasks in order to make the world a better place. She would go to meet Mr. Butterhorn and get that book and so made his home her destination.

----

Miya had finally made it to the Butterhorn home. Her trip had taken much longer than it should have for simply walking through the village. It seemed like every step she took someone had stopped her to ask her about the goddess. So many questions! This whole thing was rapidly becoming overwhelming, but she needed to stay strong in order to be a proper priestesses. Most of the questions had been about what the goddess was doing or going to do and Miya just responded that they had to wait and see. Miya did reassure everyone that Jenna's intentions were pure.

Now that she finally standing before the home of Mr. Butterhorn and his wife she was nervous again. The Butterhorns were a family of great wealth and power in the kingdom she knew. Jenson and his wife had come from far away to live in this village and start the lumber mill. His house was much langer and much more aesthetically pleasing than any of the other homes in the village. It was truly much too fancy for Miya's tastes. But like goddesses she knew that the rich lived in an entirely different world than normal people like her and her family.

Steeling her nerves Miya walked up to the door, then after taking a deep breath she knocked on the smooth wood.

"Hello? Is anyone home?"

Miya knew that Jenson had went home on his horse after the meeting at the river so he should be home. His wife was also presumably home as Miya had not seen her in the village more than a couple times. The assumption was proven correct as there soon were footsteps heard inside. In a few moments the door was opened halfway, swinging into the dimness of the house and forcing Miya's eyes to adjust to the low light. There standing in the doorway was a woman in her thirties, not too tall with brown hair and green eyes. Her skin was tan like her husbands and she was dressed quite richly for someone living in this village.

The woman frowned. "What do you want girl?"

Miya didn't quite know how to react and clasped her hands together. "H-Hello there Mrs. Butterhorn. My name is Miya and I've been sent by the request of the goddess-"

"Jenson!" the woman shouted, spinning around with anger in her voice. "Get your lazy ass over here and deal with this! I told you I wanted nothing to do with this goddess horseshit!"

With a huff the woman simply turned her back on Miya and simply stomped away into the house. The door was left open to a stunned Miya who didn't know what she should do next. She elected to simply stand there for a moment to collect herself. The sound of heated conversation could be heard coming from inside.

"Delilah you're going to have to deal with her eventually" came Jenson's voice. "The whole damn world isn't going to come to an end if I have anything to say about it."

Delilah then angrily replied. "The world may as well come to a fuckin end! This village was miserable enough without a massive girl stomping around and breaking everything in the house! Maybe this will finally get it through your chicken shit filled head that we need to move back to the city!"

"We'll talk about this later" Jenson said. It was just loud enough to be heard from the door as he was clearly trying to be quiet.

After a few moments of silence Jenson appeared at the doorway in front of Miya. He was still wearing the same outfit he had at the river and he seemed to be in a distressed state. Upon laying eyes on Miya his expression turned to one of both concern and anger.

"You're the daughter of that farmer Duncan right?" he asked sharply.

Miya bowed her head in respect. "Miya sir."

"What did you want with me then?" Jenson snapped. "Didn't your goddess make her intentions clear enough at the river?"

"Well that's actually why I'm here Mr. Butterhorn" Miya replied lifting her head again. She tried to avoid eye contact however. "Goddess Jenna sent me to get a blank book from you as well as some ink and a pen."

This caused Jenson to pause, his anger replaced with a look of utter confusion. "She wants a book you say? And writing tools? What would someone of her size possibly need those for?"

"She says its to fill with information regarding the village to be read to her later" Miya replied. She was trying to be as polite as possible so this went smoothly. She was nervous talking to Jenson.

It seemed that Jenson was expecting a much more extravagant demand when it came to Jenna. The look on his face betrayed both his relief and curiosity. He took a deep breath and then released it in a long sigh, looking Miya over as if she had just given him a gift.

"That's really all she wants?" he asked.

Miya nodded. "That's what she sent me to retrieve for my first task."

Jenson put his hand to his face and stroked his shaven face. "Well if that's really all she wants I can get that for you right now." He gave her a look. "But then I expect you to leave. I want as little to do with this goddess Jenna as possible you hear? Wait right there."

Miya stood at the door patiently as Jenson turned around and disappeared into the house. Now that her eyes had adjusted to the low light she could see more of the interior. It was lavishly furnished with all matter of fancy furniture with pillows and cloth everywhere. There were even wall hangings which Miya couldn't make out from the door. She didn't get to see much however as in less than a minute Jenson had reappeared holding the requested items.

"Here take these" Jenson said. "You'll have to go to one of the elders to get the information. I'm a busy man and have much to think about."

Miya took the book, quill pen, and sealed ink jar. "Thank you very much Mr. Butterhorn!" she said cheerily. "May the blessing of the goddess be upon you!"

"Yeah yeah" he replied. Then without another word he closed the door.

Miya stood there with the items in her hand, looking down at them in excitement and awe. She had never held so many expensive things all at once before. Jenna had trusted her with this task however, and the task was only part complete. With joy in her heart she spun around and walked briskly away from the house, almost skipping as she went. Jackson would probably be a good place to start with filling the book, he had been at the river and already knew her father. With items in hand she walked straight to the Juniper home.

----

Miya had to contend with fewer people harassing her about the goddess on her short walk to tavern. It was no wonder as when she looked over to the north she could see Jenna was sitting down on the edge of the village. Because of how loud Jenna's voice was her half of the conversation could be heard all the way over here. She was talking to people about village life it seemed. It was so amazing how much Jenna seemed to care about the villagers and it gave Miya even more pep to her steps as she approached the tavern.

JJ's Drinkery was the name of the tavern. Because it was so small in such a small village it was the only place for people to get alcohol. It also doubled as an inn of sorts, though Miya could only imagine what a real inn was like. She was a farmer's child and had never been to a city or town before.

The building was one of the largest in town, big enough to fit almost thirty people in it all at once. There was a stable to the side and a small second floor above that had a few sleeping rooms. There was always smoke coming from the chimney it seemed and it was overall a very welcoming place. The sign above the double door had the name on it and was worn from the weather. One door was always open this time of year and when the weather cooled down both her closed.

Miya walked up to the door and stepped inside, closing her eyes for a moment so they could adjust to the interior lighting. Once she opened them she could see the windows were all open and a small fire lit in the fireplace. No candles were needed during the day and so the place was lit with sunlight streaming in from outside. There was a few tables, each with several chairs, and a bar counter which ran across half the back wall. The only other notable features were the doors leading to the kitchen and the staircase leading upstairs.

"Mr. or Mrs. Juniper are you here?" Miya asked.

There wasn't anyone else inside at the moment, likely due to the time of day combined with the massive goddess sitting outside the village. She wondered if both of the owners were over with Jenna right now too. The sound of movement in the kitchen area thankfully proved her worse fears wrong and allowed her to breathe a sigh of relief.

"Who is it?" came a woman's voice.

The woman Miya knew was Illena, the wife of Mr. Juniper. Neither of the two children were around at the moment thought that didn't matter for the current mission. Miya walked up to meet Illena at the counter.

"Its me Miya" she said. "I actually needed to speak to your husband if he's here."

Illena saw the items in Miya's hands and gasped, looking around as if a thief was going to leap out and attack them. "What are you doin walking around with such expensive things Miya? How did you even get those and why're you lookin for my husband?"

Miya blushed and set what she was carrying down on the counter. "Well actually these are what I needed to talk to Mr. Juniper about. The goddess sent me to get these from Mr. Butterhorn and have someone write down information about the village and surroundings in for her." Miya was beaming proudly. "So I thought you two would be a great help with that!"

"You mean that giant little girl sitting outside the village?" Illena asked. "I've seen her myself but never imagined a real goddess would appear. Its like one of those myths come to life!" She wiped her hands on the cloth she was carrying. "My husband is out on business and the kids are off gawking at that goddess as we speak."

Miya shook her head. "They left you all alone here? That's not right! Do you need me to stay and help you?"

"That won't be necessary dear" Illena replied. "Though if you want my husband to write in that book you'll have to leave it here. Just come by in a day or two and pick it up alright? You can be sure no one will steal it. Especially if that goddess is involved." She then sighed and looked out the door. "I wonder what a goddess wants with a book?"

Miya shrugged and then smiled with excitement. "I don't know Mrs. Juniper. All I know is she trusted me with this task and once its done she'll be really proud of me! I've never had to do something this important before!"

"I can see how excited you are dear" Illena said. "I don't know what'll happen with a goddess walking around but I know you'll survive. You run along now and stay safe alright?"

"Yes maam" Miya replied.

With her heart overflowing with even more pride and excitement Miya turned and almost skipped out of the tavern doors. She was almost completely finished with her first ever errand given to her by the goddess herself. Sometime tomorrow she'd come back and see how the book was doing. Whatever happened next she knew her life would be changed for the better!
