Once I made it back to the village the morning sun was already melting away the fog. Only deep in the forest was the fog still around, the canopy of the trees protecting it from the light and allowing the thick mist to perpetuate among the ferns and trunks filling the world with mystery. As expected most of the village were awake at this point, even if my running before didn't do it they were up around this time anyway.
Now that I had the power to heal people I would start my morning going around and healing people that were praying for that kind of thing. I was going to end up like a certain other someone I was having trouble remembering the name of. I know they had something to do with Elohim but they had to run around and do a lot of healing of the sick. Not sure if I wanted my entire life to be that though.
"Good morning" I said looking down at a pair of men walking out of the village.
They didn't seem fazed at all as I walked up on them, my feet still a great distance away from them though it didn't seem that way from my perspective. They were hunters of some kind, probably off to try and get a deer or something in the forest. They each had a big bow strung on their back and had big sacks for the catch.
"Good morning goddess" the first man said up to me.
I crouched down and smiled. "Not gunna pray for good luck on the hunt today?"
The second man shuffled his feet while the first one answered me.
"Well since you were around we figured to ask you in person. Please give us good luck for finding game today goddess" He said bowing.
"I'll see what I can do" I replied standing up and smirking.
I then stepped into the village and walked directly through it. I didn't really feel the need to go around it anymore due to the fact I was already so accepted by the villagers and trusted at this point. There was a small pile of logs on the eastern side of the village near the sawmill. I had directed the villagers to just pile the lumber where they had always had and I'd take care of it myself.
Once I was at the logs I kneeled down and picked up one of the trees. Some of the trees were almost up to my shoulders and were not small at all, probably over a hundred and fifty feet tall originally. They had to be cut in half by the villagers to even be able to drag them out of the mountains. They would be easy for me to snap into smaller pieces for my uses. I tried so with the one I was holding now, just lifting it up and bending it like a person would a stick. It snapped in half with an echoing crack. I nodded and put the two pieces down on the pile again as a man walked up beside me.
"Great goddess Jenna" he said bowing.
I turned my head to look down at him. He was a big burly man with dark hair and a heavy cloak about his shoulders. I remembered he worked at the lumber mill though his name was escaping me at the moment. When I first met him it was only briefly.
"You're Uldren correct?" I asked. "You run this place if I remember correct."
He nodded and stood up straight once again. If I was human sized he would tower over me as well as most other adults. He then walked over to the pile of logs and looked at the tree I had just snapped in half, crossing his arms and letting out a soft grunt.
I shifted from kneeling into sitting on my legs. "Something wrong?"
He shook his head and turned back towards me. "No nothing goddess."
"If you have something to say just come out and say it" I replied putting my hands on my knees. "I want to hear it and won't get mad at you." Then after a short silence. "I mean it Uldren."
He seemed to be a bit more brave after hearing me say that and he let out a great sigh. I couldn't exactly tell what his mood was but I could tell he was upset about something.
"Well goddess it pains me to see all this lumber laying here and being unable to put it to good use. When I saw you snap that tree in half all I could think about was the waste of a perfectly good tree."
I put my left hand to my chin as he winced, clearly expecting a negative reaction from me.
"You don't think I'll be putting this lumber to good use?" I asked quizzically.
"No its not that goddess" he stammered backpedaling. "Its just-"
"You think its a waste of time and wood to build a wall around the village." I said leaning down slightly over him. "The goddess surely doesn't see things how we see them."
Uldren had taken several stumbling steps back away from me, the fear starting to creep up onto his face. I knew what he was thinking: he was thinking my fist was going to come down from the sky and smush him like a bug.
I smiled and put my left hand back down on my lap. I then shrugged my shoulders. "Maybe you're right little man. Honestly I wanted to build the wall out of stone." I relaxed my shoulders. "But the idea of dragging all those huge rocks out of the mountains was such a pain in the ass to even think about."
"Wh-Well a wooden wall is c-certainly" Uldren stammered, clearly taken aback by my reaction.
"No no no" I said lifting one of my hands into the air. "Maybe I should just go into the mountains and get some big rocks. That leaves the question what to do with the lumber though."
I turned my head to look at the pile of wood. If we weren't shipping off somewhere we would need to be using it ourselves. The question is on what? Maybe new houses or at least new guard towers. Earning these people's internal trust was just as important as earning their external trust. I did have to be careful to not be too approachable though I think. Maybe I should ask Uldren.
"What do you think?" I said looking down at Uldren again. "What would you do with all these logs to better the village?"
Uldren seemed in shock from my reaction. I kinda liked how easy people were to get all frazzled by simple kindness from me. I couldn't help but burst out laughing at the look on his face as he stood there too stunned to even speak. I quickly pulled myself together and crossed my arms over my chest.
"No I mean it Mr. Tell me what you would do with these logs."
"Well uh..." He kept thinking for a few moments, crossing his own arms. "Well there are a few families that could do with houses for their newly wed children. We do need another guard tower for the village."
"What about furniture?" I asked lowering myself down to rest my head in my hands, my elbows on my legs. "I'm sure some people need things like chairs or wardrobes."
Uldren scoffed and waved one of his hands in dismissal. "We're too poor in this village to have things like wardrobes. All of the lumber is shipped off and they probably make that sort of thing in the cities."
The narrative has been illicitly obtained; should you discover it on Amazon, report the violation.
"What if the lumber wasn't being shipped off though?" I asked.
I mean this lumber literally wasn't being shipped off, but it was clear that he was forgetting that. It would be fun to watch him realize that himself though so I was leading him along in discovery. I didn't have to wait long as his face lit up with the realization. That's the look I was waiting for and it brought a smile to my face.
"That's right" I said smiling. "I did take this wood for the village's use." I reach out my left hand and gently poke him in the chest with my index finger, just enough to make him stumble back to regain his balance. "I'll leave these logs to you and your men. I want you to make me proud ok?"
Uldren stammered and sputtered. "Yes goddess! Of course goddess!" He managed to regain his composure and bowed down on the ground in front of me as I removed my hand. "Thank you great goddess Jenna! I will not disappoint you!"
"Good man" I said standing up. I stretched a little and nodded down at him. "I wish I could get you some table saws or industrial equipment but sadly I can't. Be a good man now ok."
I turned and walked away from the sawmill leaving Uldren to contemplate his new workload.. My mind had already moved on to the next person I was going to visit.
There was a prayer by a mother who wanted health for her new baby that was growing inside her. I figured I'd stop by and say hello, give my blessing, that sort of thing. It was only a dozen or so steps to their house from where I had been anyway. Once I arrived my footsteps had drawn the expecting mother and her other child out from their house.
I kneeled down and smiled at them as the women stood in the door to her home and held her son back protectively. Once she realized I had stopped to talk to them she let the boy go and he ran over to my knees jumping up and down in excitement.
"The goddess came to visit us mother!" he exclaimed loudly.
"Yes I did" I said lowering one of my fingers down for him to touch. "I heard your prayer about the baby actually and decided to come visit."
Hearing this the woman came out of the house and brushed off her apron, probably thinking it made her more presentable to me or something. I could see she already had a pretty noticeable stomach so she must be pretty far along in her pregnancy.
"T-Thank you goddess" she said bowing. Well as much as she could bow with her belly.
I lowered myself down to my legs again, holding myself up with my elbows again. It would be nice to lay down so I could more easily talk to people but doing so in the village was just asking for my long legs to demolish homes.
"So is it a girl or a boy?" I asked getting a little excited.
The woman looked up at me confusion. "Well um. We don't know goddess. There's no way to tell before the baby comes."
"Sure there is" I said dismissively "The ultrasound would- oh."
"Ultrasound?" the woman asked in confusion. She then shouted at her son. "Tim get away from there! Go back inside the house if you can't control yourself around the goddess."
Her son was busy running around me and trying to climb up the side of my leg. I wasn't bothered by it so I let him continue. After the call from his mother he groaned in disappointment and walked back to the house.
"Yes mother" he said grumpily as he went back inside. He turned to me and waved. "Bye goddess."
I gave him a small wave before turning my attention back to his mother. "Well yeah. I guess you guys wouldn't have ultrasound sorry about that."
"What is ultrasound goddess?" she asked. "Is it some kind of magic?"
I shook my head. Looks like I'll have to explain it the best I can.
"Well no. Its using a special type of sound frequency to see whats going on inside someone's body. You have to put jelly on your stomach or whatever body part and then the sound goes inside you and the machine can pick it up and show you a picture of it. So you can see what the baby is before its born."
She looked very confused from my explanation which I expected. "Is this something the gods have? It sounds amazing."
"Yeah I guess its something humans won't have for a while." I said with a sigh. "If you want I can try to use magic to emulate it for you. See what your baby is."
"You can do that?" she said in awe.
"Yeah why not?" I said. "Just stand right there. Be still now."
I figured if what I did before with healing that lumberjack's leg was any indication I'll be able to see inside people with my magic vision. It was worth a shot.
"Yes right there."
Carefully I reached out with my index finger and put my fingertip right on the woman's chest. I then slowly slid it down over her belly which made her yelp a little. It must have been wild seeing a finger as big as mine touching her baby bump like this. She clearly trusted me though.
Once my finger was in place I closed my eyes. Carefully I expended a bit of mana into her body, letting it flow into the cavity of her womb. It was amazing to behold as an image of the baby actually formed inside my mind. I was like an x-ray machine and ultrasound combined. It was clear to see that the baby was a boy, and there was something wrong as well. The legs of the baby were twisted up in the umbilical cord and as such were misshapen. I bet I could fix this.
Slowly I pushed some mana into the baby itself. It squirmed around as if it knew I was there or something, like it could feel the mana inside it. It didn't seem to be in pain though so I went ahead and pushed the umbilical cord away and straightened out its little legs.
"Umph! Goddess!" the woman said.
"Its fine" I replied with my eyes still closed.
Once the legs were completely restored I saw the baby kicking them a little which got a groan from the mother. I then removed my mana and pulled my finger away. I don't think I'll even tell her what I just did.
"The baby is kicking goddess" she said holding her belly with her hands now that my finger was gone.
"Yeah seems like it" I said smiling. "You have a healthy boy inside you. Seems he'll be just fine and come out strong."
She gasped and looked up at me in awe. "You could see inside me? Thank you goddess!" She then tried to bow again which of course didn't go well.
People usually gave presents at baby showers. I remember that was a thing where I came from, giving gifts to expecting parents. I didn't have anything really go give, but if I could make blood out of mana perhaps I could make objects too. What would I give them anyway? A baby rattle I guess?
"Just one moment" I said.
I closed my eyes and concentrated. Since there was no one around to ask if this was possible I was just going to try and find out myself. Besides in all the stories I remember creating items out of thin air was a thing all gods could do. I imagined in my minds eye a tiny rattle that would fit in a babies hand, something probably the size of a grain of pepper to me. Something that tiny would be possible to make with mana surely. I pictured how it would look like a small orb filled with sand and dry grains, its yellow paint and long handle carefully lacquered to protect from water. It would be made from wood I suppose.
My mana bar took a sudden dip, not enough to make me panic but enough to be noticeable. It made me jump to see it go down so suddenly. That was nothing compared to what I saw happening in my minds eye in front of me. A coalition of light forming into a tiny orb at the tip of my finger. It was tiny like a grain of pepper indeed. I opened my eyes and saw at the tip of my index finger a small ball of light. Then in an instant it formed into the very rattle I was picturing.
"Uh...." I said staring blankly.
"Is something wrong goddess?" the woman asked below.
"No nothing" I replied still stunned. "I just. Well I had a gift for the baby."
I lowered my fingertip down in front of her and presented the rattle. She reached out and took it from my finger, shaking it around a little trying to figure out what it was for. The shock was still taking up most of my mental capacity at the moment so she was left in confusion as I sort of came to accept what I had just done. I had created an object out of thin air. Well out of mana technically. Being a goddess was pretty amazing.
"This is for the baby right?" the woman asked. "I remember seeing these sorts of things before."
Her voice snapped me out of my daze and I pulled my hand back. "Yes its a rattle. Its for the baby."
I replied in such a monotone way, my mind still drifting of course to the possibilities item creation brought to the table. At the moment it took quite a lot of mana, probably because I was so new at it. I'm sure if I practice enough to be more efficient it would cost less.
The woman noticed my thousand mile stare as I looked blankly into the distance. "Is everything alright goddess?"
"Everything's fine" I said still with the flat tone and blank stare. "I've just got to go think about something."
I stood up without another word to her, barely registering her thanks and farewell. Item creation huh. Healing the injured and sick. What other things could magic do? I couldn't be the only one with magic in this world could I?
It was difficult to focus with my mind swirling with questions and imagined futures. I walked out of the village barely able to be mindful enough to watch where I was stepping. I'm sure others could use magic in this world, some of the villagers hinted as much. I'm sure goddesses just could use magic on a larger scale and with more potency though. I'm going to have to do lots more experimentation.
I looked up at the sky and saw gray clouds rolling in from the the east.
It was going to rain today.
